How are you playing the DSD? On a computer or a player? Either way what;s happening is tat the DSD is converted to 96khz PCM. So it's not "true" DSD decoding. But regular PCM decoding. I.e.: It is not bit perfect. I don't believe sample rate is equivalent to bit depth (bit perfect). The first thing to understand is there are basically only two main sample frequencies: 44.1kHz and 48kHz. Everything else is a variant of one of those two numbers. 96kHz is a doubling of 48kHz, while 192kHz is again doubling that number. 88.2kHz and 176.4kHz are doubled numbers of the original CD standard of 44.1kHz. Thus the source is sending the DC-1 a PCM signal at 96kHz. The DC-1 does not take native DSD. I see. That means DC-1 can plays DSD, but does not take native DSD.

It doesn't take DSD directly, but can take LPCM @ 174.6kHz...which should be indistinguishable from the DSD in sound quality.

looks like the permanent price for the dc1 is now 499 I think that is kinda shady, had one price, then lowered it, then put it on sale for a lot less and everybody and their mother buys one, then leave the price low so the great value you thought you were getting is kinda diminished. My question is why the 300 price drop? Are they trying to flood the market and then dump a new better product like a tube DAC with a pre amp. Makes you wonder...... That just shows how much mark up is in this industry, there is still 4 to 5 times mark up even at the 499 price. What i dont like is that the xda2 price is kinda low, it didnt go back up anymore, i bought it for 339 last sept and now its depreciated permanently, i bought a dc1 at the sale thinking xda2 and dc1 will go back their original price or near it, and sell my xda2 around my acquired price to cover for the dc1. Just left a bad taste in my mouth, it doesnt feel right. Sigh*

I like the new pricing...I just might get an XDA-2 for a second system at this kind of price! Or, wait for a used one at an even better price.

I.e.: It is not bit perfect. The DSD64 and DSD128 are playing on a notebook computer of Windows 7. [USB 2.0 HIGH-SPEED TRUE HD-AUDIO WASAPI] That's what is happening either your playback software or windows is resampling your output to 96khz. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing. 96khz is very high (More than twice CD quality)

I too like the new pricing. I wish ALL audio products would price drop a few hundred bucks!
Lower prices means more gear in my rack, and more money in my account. Win/Win IMO

Because... we would all rather be able to say we have an $899 DAC, not a $499 DAC. Dan, please institute a policy of releasing new products at 3x the price it will eventually be listed at. Just tell Emotiva you want the DC-1 for $899, then you cane have a $899 dac, or you can pay $499, then say you got a $899 dac for $499. Which brings up the question, if you pay $499 for a DAC (or any product) that lists for $899, do you have an $899 or a $499 DAC? Even if you pay $30,000 for a set of cable lifters, does that mean you really have a set of $30,000 cable lifters or do you have something that cost $1.00 to make and you're a fool? So often the listed price has nothing to do with the cost of the product but everything to do with marketing and the nerve of the seller. I think if we buy something and we're happy with it, that's the important bottom line. As Andrew pointed out in one of the threads in the lounge, after he joined Emotiva he saw behind the curtain at what it really costs to make stuff. I'm happy to be a customer of Emo because I think their products have great quality, are reasonably priced, and yet I suspect Dan and Cathy are still making a nice profit margin. It's a win-win situation.

I have had my DC-1 for about 2 months. I am running a Sony Blu-Ray into it via Coax. I have been traveling a lot, so it probably only has about 10 hour of music listening on it so far. I also have an XDA-1 DAC from Emotiva, which I think is an excellent DAC, but I got the DC-1 as an upgrade. From the start the DC-1 has sounded a bit thin and edgy to me, and in many ways not as musical or full in sound as my older and less costly Emotiva XDA dac. This concerned me. I tried a few different CD or blu-ray players as transports and the Sony remained the best. A few others were very shrill. I thought it might be the cable so I just purchased and received new Emotiva Coax and Toslink cables. The Sony Blu-Ray sounded a bit better with the new Emotiva coax cable. Then as a comparison I hooked up the TOSLINK to my old Sony ES CD player and WHAMo!, it sounded stupendous through the DC-1, just what I was waiting for all along -- detailed, full, musical and engaging, a step up from the XDA. My 1980s Sony ES CD player via TOSLINK is sounding way better than several much newer Sony Blu-Ray players (and a Marantz CD player) via Coax through the DC1. The Sony does not have a Coax out, only TOSLINK, so I cannot make that comparison. I am wondering if the coax in to the DC-1 may have an issue, or if none of these players match up very will with the DC-1 for some reason. Over the coax they all sound is a bit thin. I guess I will have to try them via TOSLINK as a comparison. Via coax the high end is pretty good and very detailed, but bass is lacking. Hmmm. The DC-1 is run via costly balanced cables into a Hypex amplifier that I built. The XDA sounded better with these players running into it on coax than does the DC-1. Suggestions?

Have you tried using a computer and USB? Just for another data point.

I am listening to CD's. Tomorrow I will try my laptop via an Emotiva USB cable. I listened to the Sony Blu-Ray via TOSLINK and Coax and the sound was equal. I guess the quality of the transport makes a difference as everything else in my system is pretty top notch, so the old sony CD player perhaps just has a very solid transport. The thing weighs about 15 pounds vs about 2 pounds for the Blu-Ray. I will keep trying and comparing.

Got my DC-1 a few days ago and am enjoying it very much. Using it as a preamp running coax to my ERC-1, optical to the tv and headphone amp when quiet is required. When I get a 10-15 foot usb cable I will be able to listen to files on my laptop. The sound has been excellent since first plugging it in and gets better/smoother with further break-in. This is a very versatile performer that has taken my system to the next level. The clarity and resolution make for a great listening experience. Any recommendations for a long usb cable? Monoprice?
