G'day guys, I can swing the xpr 5, but I'm taking in what is said here because of all your knowledge etc.. I suppose the xpr5 will future proof me somewhat and will have to have an electrician run a circuit, but I also hear RW's advice about xpa's ,so I'm pondering at this time.. One question though, is about the gain on xpa's as against gain on xpr ,correct me if I'm wrong ,is gain on xpr 5 less likely to produce hissing etc ,your thoughts please... Johnno Johnno Nope. I lowered the gain because everyone kept asking for it but makes 0 difference in the noise floor. Lonnie

so lowering the gain made NO difference in the floor noise? BS
Perhaps you should market with Bose...no sensitivity, no highs (except for hiss), no lows

so lowering the gain made NO difference in the floor noise? BSThat is correct and when I say no difference I mean we'll less than a db which to me equates to no difference. Believe it or not. Lonnie

MetalDude, instead of buying a receiver, why don't you get an Emo UMC-200? It will be a *perfect* match for the XPA-5 and will give you a very capable preprocessor for all of your HT sources. The UMC-200 and XPA-5 are among the very best bargains in the world today...
-RW- Forget the damn XPR-5 son, I *know* what I'm talking about. Plus, I'm very handsome...<g>

Lonnie I am at your service. I bought your amps / a few times Bring any high gain Emotiva amp you want, connect and we will listen..... fact is we don't even have to listen to music just listen to idle noise meaning this: the source> amp> speaker must match or it is inferior to ones that do

Lonnie So then what IS the difference between the XPA-1 and the XPA-5 because the -1 had severe floor noise when mounted in the same system

Lonnie So then what IS the difference between the XPA-1 and the XPA-5 because the -1 had severe floor noise when mounted in the same system Rail voltage and thermal noise. Simply put the output stage has a specific amount of noise. If the diff and per-drive stage has significantly lower noise, lowering the gain will not always equate to lower noise floor. Lonnie

Lonnie Cool Lonnie but sitting at my couch 10 feet from the center line it was NOISE at idle; PERIOD. Call it what you want and I am willing to discuss this with your company's representative at any time.

Emotiva might have a high gain on their product but I never experience with noise and hiss. I have USP connected to UPA-2 and I can turn the volume all the way to 3:00 volume dial and no hiss or noise. I do get a noise and hiss using different brand preamp and hear it even just few dial. My suspect for the noise you may have might been with your preamp. I tried both XDA direct as well as USP and there is no noise.

Metaldude, I first bought an XPA-5 to run my RF-7 and it made a big difference coming from a Yamaha RX-Z9. Than I purchased a pair of XPA-1 and SQ was the same but it does have better bass and headroom at louder volume. So if you watch movies or listen to music at higher volumes than get the XPA-1s which have plenty of power to drive those high efficient speakers. I do get a hiss with both amps but only if I put my ears next to the speakers but at 5 feet away I can't hear the hiss. That's my opinion and love my system and I will never go back to a receiver again lol
