Its a very noble cause but there will be no cure for Diabetes. I have is and inject three times a day. There is NO money to be made on a cure...only "management". four years ago a researcher looking for a cure too the essence of a special pepper plant and in surgery, injected it into a diabetics(one) pancreas and it started pumping out insulin immediately. No one has heard or seen him since. "We will never, ever go to the Moon either." Oh, wait, we did that already... FYI: My daughter and her friends are following this thread with much excitement. Well, at least they were. Thanks for the help. This father will NEVER and I mean EVER, give up looking for a cure! No matter what barriers are to be placed before him. I deleted that idiots remark. I can sympathize with his personal pain, but his comment is totally inappropriate and intended to cause pain and bring dismay to another person. And that person is a child. Unacceptable. It is not necessary to destroy the hope of others. I have seen tremendous strides in medicine in my lifetime, are I believe we are close to finding a cure for this disease. They said AIDS was a death sentence and look at it now. Enough said. Thanks to our family of forum members who are helping support this wonderful effort. God bless all of you. Peace and love, Big Dan

Thank you Big Dan, for much more than just defending this cause. You area all are the real deal, that's for sure.
As for that $3,500 goal... How's about we not only break it, but SMASH it into little tiny pieces! :-)
Thank you all! You are all so amazing. Coming to Emofest? Let's have a drink together so I can make a very special toast to you all.
Cheers, Derek

I am new to this forum and don't know anyone, but share an interest in home electronics. Also, my sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 7th grade (I was in 4th grade at the time) and it was hard on our family. Mostly the unknowns of what it was and how we needed to adjust at home. She is now 38, married with three lovely children, and a pediatric intensive care nurse at a large hospital. I've seen so many advances that she has been able to benefit...She went from 3 shots a day in junior high and now she has an insulin pump and only has to change it once every couple of days. It's not always about finding a cure (which I hope they do) but also investment in technological advances that help diabetics live more normal lives.
Thank you for riding for this cause. You've got my support, and donation.

You've got my support, and donation. First of all, welcome for the forum! As you can see, it's full of great people willing to help out with all kinds of needs. I too wish to thank you for your insights. It gives me great hope to hear success stories like your sisters. Congrats to her by the way for her position as a pediatric nurse! Not an easy job for sure. I'm curious if her having diabetes helped lead her into the nursing field? I know my daughter is very interested in sports medicine and how to manage diabetes as an athlete. She also is interested in becoming a diabetes educator as well as more involvement in the ADA. She gets so frustrated at the lack of understanding of Type-1 diabetes. Kids coming up to her telling her, "Oh you shouldn't eat that cookie! Since your diabetic, you can't have any sugar!" "Do you have to good or the bad diabetes?" "So, do you think you will lose your legs?" "You just need to control your diet better." Anyway, she is already doing her best to educate those around here, but I know she wants to help all those other new diabetics deal with these kind of questions. She has aged "mentally" far beyond her years since her diagnosis at age 10. Once again, welcome to the forum and thank you for supporting my efforts! Take care, Derek

Yes, it seems to me a frame mount for the bike would make that sort of trainer a LOT safer. Of course I should talk, I'll never use one. My bike looks like this, and a couple miles on flat streets is about my speed:

Derek, I appreciate the warm welcome to the club. I can't wait to have some emo gear so I can reach out to the community for any questions I have!! I can't say that my sister being diagnosed with diabetes was a defining moment in her choosing to pursue nursing, but it definitely helped her go down that path. Your daughter wanting to reach out and teach people more about what diabetes is about to cut through the myths and unknowns is amazing. My sister ran track and played volleyball throughout high school after being diagnosed, and pushing toward the dream to help in sports medicine is great. Growing up with a sister with it is a little different than having a daughter. I still teased her and picked on her, made fun of her liking boys....all the normal things a good little brother should do. I now have a 6 yr old daughter, and imagining her working through anything like that as her father is a whole new ball game. Kudos to you!! I've run a couple marathons to raise money for brain cancer research, and people called me crazy for running 26.2 miles. Riding a bike 200+ seems even more monumental to me. Best of luck in all your preparation and training. Tim
