I was there at the Boston show and was in 2 channel room where they have it setup with, erc-3, xmc-1, xda-2, mac laptop ==> Bob Carver tube, xpr-1, xpa-1 ===> B&W nautilus 803 or 804 with 2 12" sub. I sat there and listen through many song and personally the sound was muddy and thick not so much of clarity I was expecting of a setup like that. ERC-3 face plate look no different then the old version of ERC-1 or 2 just now with a tray loader. I prefer the nicer/fancier slot loader instead of old school tray popping out that IMO.
I don't know how did the guy above comment by judging the sound of ERC-3 DAC when they had it hook up to TUBE??? and I doubt it was hookup to XDA-2 that would not make sense.
I over heard those Bob Carver tube goes for $25,000 each or pair not sure and they were on table display and in action, not sure it will be on sale on Emo website or not, it yes that would break the bank for 2 channel of my understanding.

Oh yes there is a difference! The dac inside is the same as the new dc-1 pro dac coming out soon which is better than the xda-2 dac, and Dan said it does dsd. I also like the looks of it better and it seems more robust. There is a sliding tray now with blue light where the cd goes in instead of the Toshiba slot loader. I will be selling my erc-2 soon. If the DAC is THAT great, i hope Emotiva has been wise and put one usb/opt/coax digital input on the ERC-3? Seen that on many new cd-players now - they add something more than just cd-playback..

If you sat there longer you would see it was a xsp-1 not a xmc-1 and it was not hooked up to just the tube amps! At anyones request they switched out the tube amps to the xpa-1l's or the xpa-1's or the xpr-1's apon request, which was swapped quite frequently thru the day! Maybe you don't like the sound of the tube amps. The xpr-1's sounded fantastic in that set up. In my honest opinion i thought it sounded fantastic! Erc-3, xsp-1, xpr-1's to the B&W 804 diamond series speakers with the two 12" proto type dsp subs. At times they did not use the erc-3 they used the lap top computer to the xda-2, which i felt sounded muddy, maybe that's the set up you heard.

I also wanted to get the new ERC-3 but I still have a perfectly good CD player. Yeah? So? So the ERC-3 is a 'tray-loader', eh? I like that much better than 'slots'...

I know there is a dirty joke in there but I'm too tired to think of one.... I do have to say the idea that the ERC-3 could have a digital input is rather exciting.

Nick at Emotiva told me the ERC-3 is in pre-production and is "a few" months away from being available.

Thanks for that info, Glass. It will be interesting to see what they're bringing to the table this time. It's tougher to justify a $$$ CD player these days.

I'm a empty nester rebuilding my stereo set up and have 3000 cd's and was ready to buy the ERC-2 and found it unavailable. I'm trying to wait on the ERC-3. SACD would be a major plus for me.

I was there and listened for over an hour and it sounded fabulous, terrific, stupendous, you pick the adjective. Muddy? Thick? Huh? The ERC looks COMPLETELY different from the ERC-1 and 2. Those B&W's were really nice. What a system. We had it hooked up the XPR-1's, but I heard the tube amps and they were real nice. Sorry Dennis, but thats not what I heard, nor one single person I spoke to... Everyone loved all that gear and SQ..

The ERC-3 has the new prodac internals? Does anybody else have confirmation of this?

Hmm, few months away and the ERC-2 is already removed from the website? The ERC-2 should be available almost to the day you are able to order the ERC-3 in my opinion.. They probably manufacture in large batches, so if they did another run of ERC-2's shortly before the ERC-3 goes into production they might end up with a large number of ERC-2's on hand after the release of the ERC-3. Emotiva probably doesn't want to deal with the excess inventory. They'd have to drop the price on them substantially in order to sell them, and they may not have enough profit in there to justify that. Plus a lot of people know that the ERC-3 is coming, so would probably hold off buying an ERC-2, and then those that don't know and buy the ERC-2 might get upset when the ERC-3 is release so soon after their purpose and might demand a discount or low-cost upgrade. All in all it probably makes far more sense for them to be without a CD player for a short time rather than having to deal with all the issues they may encounter with two different models sitting in their warehouse.

Keith M hit the nail on the head. Emotiva sells great products at low prices. The key to that is avoiding unnecessary costs. To be honest, I'm sure the people looking for the ERC-2 in the next two months are in the dozens, not the hundreds, and they'll have their solution soon enough. It would be smart of them to make the pre-order/"reservation" page though to keep from losing those sales.

I'd say keep following this thread and we'll see what happens! If this doesn't have SACD and that's a dealbreaker for you, I'd try the Oppo 103 or 105. I have the 103 and think things sound pretty great, but the 105 has better DACs and balanced output, plus optical and coax in and the ability to use a USB DAC, analog 7.1 outs and a headphone jack. But hey, that's $1200. The 103 is $500. I imagine the ERC will come in underneath both, and the Oppos are really designed as Blu-ray players so you'd be paying for a whoooole lot you don't need. Hmm, now it's starting to sound good!

Your right,if had made the purchase when I wanted to it would have been just a couple days when I saw this thread about the ERC-3. I just wish the gap was a little smaller between. Probably why the Sherbourn CD-1 is on sale. I have recently bought a new Turntable but I am interested to see what Emotiva has in store with their new TT. I'll wait on upgrades until they release more info.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Music Hall Maverick. I know they are 10 years old but you can get them pretty cheap. If I buy a CD only I was thinking of something like that just for SCAD playback.

I've had one (Music Hall Maverick) for quite a few years now. It's a good player and does not convert to PCM before the analog out. The remote is a substantial hunk of metal! It will upsample a CD to 24/96khz but will also pass native.

does this means, instead of buying a separate preamp, dac for my mac lossless files , cd sources , i could use the ERC-3 only as a dac , preamp , directly into my amplifiers? a kinda all in one , with the same better chip as the dc-1 coming ... ??
