I much rather see a music server form Emotiva over just another CD player. Did I just said "just another CD player?" Yes.I did say so...Just give me one second while I press play on my Squeezebox remote to play some flac files...Okay I am back...It literally took me one second Same here. ^^^This

Impossible to compete with that. Emotiva is better off to present more down to earth standard electronic like amps and fill the gaps in their product portfolio. It is strange that products go end of production there is no replacement filling the gap. You do not see this happening with the big brands.

I totally agree about not attempting to compete in that space. It's a COMPLETELY different skill set.
Have to respectfully disagree about Sonos, but it's just a matter of personal preference. It's not my cup of tea, as I view it an overpriced alternative to AirPlay that locks you into their specific UI and doesn't integrate with your computers. I would still probably recommend Sonos for non-technical people with large digital collections (large enough to not fit on a phone).

I have to agree that AirPlay does a very similiar things for a lot cheaper. I dont know what you mean by it doesnt integrate with your computers because you can install the sonos software on just about any computer and it will catalaog all of your music into one library from all of your computers and act as a controller on any of the computers also. I will also say that I have Sonos and what I really like about it is the ability to create playlists across different music sources. So I can create a playlist from songs on my computer, songs on my network drive, songs on spotify all into one playlist and just hit play on it and it works flawlessly. If you can get over the price, the functionality and ease of use made it worth it to me personally.

I just put a bunch of Sonos stuff in my parent's house and ripped out the old Niles/Russound IR control pads and integration pieces. Went from three racks to one small one (dedicated media room with the cabling head end in the adjacent closet). Three weeks in, no calls for support....no "I don't know how to make this work". I'm happy, they're happy. Does it sound as good as an Emo stack? No, but it works well and there's no drama.

Cory, I wasn't clear – I meant that you can't use Sonos as an audio output device from an arbitrary app, like you can with AirPlay.

It has to have support for that specific app within Sonos. Luckily Sonos is gaining a lot of ground and adding more sources all the time, the bigger they get the more they are going to add but I do see your point.

Sonos should just implement an airplay receiver.

Since my Squeezebox broke I am considering getting a Sonos but at this particular moment my funds are low. I purchased the Squeezebox used but I would like to get one brand new when fund become available.

I looked into Sonos and decided against it both because it is proprietary, it requires a computer up and running to access local music, and I don't have a smartphone that works with their system. I don't care so much about multiroom sound as I do just having my digital files consolidated and easily accessible.
Currently I use a Zune HD (yes!) with lossless tracks and with a dock that support SPDIF output to my UMC-1. My family can just go and play what they want when they want and not worry about if a computer is off or asleep or whatever. But capacity is limited, the screen is small, and being in a dock is flimsy.
I wish someone would make one of these standalone players with a largish touchscreen and decent storage. The Olive (http://www.myoliveone.com/Ones) looked promising but I'm not sure what they are up to now; it seems like perpetual preorder.
I agree it is a bit out of their expertise, but I'd seriously consider something from Emo. I don't believe Sonos handles video, so Emo could also differentiate themselves that way.

Emotiva is/was looking into a streaming player as of Emofest 2012. Whether or not they are still working on the product is unknown. There may (or may not) be more news to share at Emofest at the end of this month.

You know, last weekend I was sitting outside by my fire pit listening to my outside system, and noticed my cd player was jittering at the start of some songs. I have a shed for gardening tools and have a system inside with deck speakers outside ( ODS speakers, don't rip me on these). So my OCD says self, "you need a new cd player". I felt pretty cocky because I have been a good boy and stashed some money away, thought I would buy a Emotiva or Sherbourne. Oh well, waiting again.

You could always buy used...I have a perfect condition ERC-2 for sale on the emporium...1 year old.
And if you are going to Emofest, we can save shipping and avoid Paypal fees!

A very useful device would be a USB media player with a built in streamer for internet based radio. Just plug your USB stick or hard drive full of music files. They would sell a bunch.

How many, really, when Google Chromecast is $35?

Chromecast seems to be an incredible product especially for the price BUT it requires an active computer or handheld device to send info to the chromecast. A streamer can pull data from an attached storage device, NAS, handheld device with DLNA sharing or an unattended (but powered on) computer.
Chromecast is great if you have the computer or device right there in front of you.
If I didn't already have an Apple TV paired with my Macbook Pro, I would likely get a Chromecast but I still want a more robust streamer. I'm not in a hurry for one so I can wait to see what Emotiva brings to the table before making decisions.

As I sit here waiting for the forthcoming ERC 3 I of course try to imagine one in my system , you may have seen I would love to see the ERC 3 to have Tiffany style connectors to match the build quality of the rest of the player , it will be a shame to see cheaper type RCA's . I like the SACD idea or even HDCD as I own a lot of them . One other feature I could see being really useful would be a variable output for level matching . Personally I would prefer a modest price increase and done right , rather than same price and compromise a little here and there .

This is probably the number 1 reason some people don't buy the current ERC-2. My number one reason for not buying an ERC-2 is that it's a CD player.

I like the naim streamers, and the linn ds series.
