Anyone heard any whispers about when the ERC-3 will be released? I need a new CD player as my current ones crapped out and I'm using a vintage one ATM...

The two most likely people to be in possession of that information are Cathy and Lonnie. Call them and see if they are willing to release information on the ETA. If I had a guess, I would say it is already on the boat from China and is just a matter of when it makes it thru customs and arrives in the Franklin warehouse. Don't hold your breath, but that is my best "educated" guess. Good luck.

Preorders are now being taken and they will start shipping December 13th. Look in the Emotiva Product/Sources section for details. Looks like they are offering preorder price of $449.00 (Reg $499.00).

Non starter without SACD playback. Too close to Oppo pricing and feature poor by comparison.

Interesting the posts here with good points. I think for a stand alone CD player this ERC-3 is a winner! How many are doing this much at this price built like this? Sure you can get other units even with Blue Ray playback etc. but do you need that video circuit in there for a dedicated music rig? Don't know on that one. I think for the music lover and ardent CD music listener, your choice in a great CD player for real easy money is here. IMHO. Enjoy!

Under playback in addition to mp3's it says - "prerecorded or computer recorded with stereo audio files" So exactly what format is this? Does this mean it will play wav files? What about Flac? Will it play anything higher than 44.1 Khz? (Hi def) Also... In the test data, they mentioned the signal input had a bit depth of 24 bits. How did they manage that and more importantly...how can we do that?

Does anyone know - with this preorder - will the payment method be charged when it ships - or is it charged immediately?
I was going to email sales - but figured someone here might already know.

Non starter without SACD playback. Too close to Oppo pricing and feature poor by comparison. Mel I'm confused by the listing playback of red book layer hybrid SACDs only. It was my understanding from Emofest that it was supposed to be capable of playing normal SACDs but that's not in the feature list. Darn.

Paypal was charged to credit card once order placed, not sure about direct credit card order. Now I see there is no SACD playback, I might consider cancelling order.

I was still holding out some hope for SACD, but straight from the manual ( emotiva.com/resources/manuals/ERC-3_user_manual_v1.pdf): The ERC-3 does NOT play: •DVD-A discs, DVDs, or Blu-Ray discs. •Surround sound content recorded on any type of disc. •Audio files on pre-recorded or computer recorded discs OTHER THAN the ones listed above. • Non-hybrid SACDs (SACDs with only a DSD/SACD layer). • Audio files on computer recorded DVD-R or Blu-Ray discs.

Jim, I don't recall any talk of the ERC-3 being an SACD player except for misinformed or confused members (that includes me many times ). It is mostly an updated ERC-2 with the tray loader versus the slot loader. Apparently Toshiba stopped making the slot loader and that was the catalyst for the new model. The ERC-3 does weigh a few lbs more than the ERC-2, not sure if that is just new partitioning inside or heavier frame or heavier parts.. Whether there is an increase in sound quality will remain to be heard if any new buyer keeps their ERC-2 for a direct A/B test. I hope someone will actually keep their ERC-2 until they can do a comparison. The ERC-1 and ERC-2 did play the Redbook layer of the SACD hybrids but one had to have the firmware CD from Emotiva for that (I do and it works ..... there were some comments that it did not work on all SACD Redbook layers). However, the ERC-3 was never said to play regular SACD's. I love my ERC-2 and the ERC-3 looks like a great player also, at an incredibly competitive price. Even with no SACD it seems to me like a huge winner for anyone wanting a superb CD player! Like you posted above: The ERC-3 does NOT play: .......... • Non-hybrid SACDs (SACDs with only a DSD/SACD layer). (I think this presumes also it does not play the DSD/SACD layer of a hybrid SACD).

Here is what I was referring to (because I remember hearing it too): From Mark's Emofest 2013 notes ( emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/32636/klinemjs-emofest-notes-updated ) Sources First, the ERC-3…it is on track for “2013 Holiday” launch with a price of $499. In addition to the new transport (tray instead of slot loading), it will have the DC-1 DAC’s and all after the DAC’s. Lonnie said that testing of it showed as close to perfect as possible…very low noise & flat FQ. AND…it can play 2 channel SACD. And, it will have Gen 2 cosmetics.

I think he meant the Redbook layer of a hybrid when he mentioned the 2 channel SACD and not a DSD 2 channel SACD. Not all SACD's are multi-channel. There is a difference between the Redbook 2 channel layer on a hybrid SACD and the DSD 2 channel layer on a standard SACD. From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CDSACD is a disc of identical physical dimensions to a standard compact disc; the density of the disc is the same as a DVD. There are three types of disc:[18] Hybrid: Hybrid SACDs are encoded with a 4.7 GB DSD layer (also known as the HD layer), as well as a PCM (Red Book) audio layer readable by most conventional Compact Disc players.[19] .....Single-layer: A DVD-5 encoded with one 4.7 GB DSD layer. Single-layer SACDs are not backward-compatible with conventional CD players. .....Dual-layer: A DVD-9 encoded with two DSD layers, totaling 8.5 GB, and no PCM layer. Dual-layer SACDs can store nearly twice as much data as a single-layer SACD. Like single-layer SACDs, dual-layer discs are not backward-compatible with conventional CD players. A stereo SACD recording has an uncompressed rate of 5.6 Mbit/s, four times the rate for Red Book CD stereo audio.[18] Other technical parameters are as follows: CD layer (optional) SACD layerDisc capacity 700 MB[20] 4.7 GB[18] Audio encoding 16 bit PCM 1 bit DSD Sampling frequency 44.1 kHz 2.8224 MHz[18] Audio channels 2 (Stereo) up to 6 (Discrete surround)
