What I failed to report is that this is Robert’s only ever performance of this song live without Jimmy playing guitar.
Here’s a video.

That is still up for great debate and personal preferences. That being said, I don't think, overall, you can go wrong with the newest ones. Especially if you are a more audiophile than die hard Zep fan. The sound has certainly never sounded so "clear" and in the room so to speak. Sorry novisnick, but the 24/96 hi-rez sounds better!!! (I'm saying that never hearing the vinyl, which I do own by the way! )

When were these new Led Zeppelin remasters produced? I guess I didn't notice them ... I see some on HDTracks.com; is that where people are getting them?

Never really hearing them! Actually, I have, and they do sound very nice.

Just joking. Yes, Jimmy Page not only had it all completely remastered from the original tapes, but they nearly doubled the amount of music available by adding "companion discs" to each and every album. What is on those companion discs varies by release. Most are alternative versions of existing songs (many are nothing overly surprising while others are revolutionary). The Zep 1 disc is a live show. And then mixed in on various discs are newly released tracks never heard before (yes, some not even on bootleg - real surprises). Everything is available in various sets and depends on what you really prefer. Are you interested more in CD's, Vinyl, or hi-rez files? You can buy the CD's by themselves, the vinyl by themselves, the HD Tracks by themselves, or get the super deluxe sets that have the CD's/Vinyl/Hi-Rez download card/Book/Limited print all in one box. What I was saying to novisnick is that I actually have everything - I bought it all (except the HD Tracks because I downloaded the hi-rez from the deluxe set cards). The sound quality, even on just the CD's, is definitely quite different than anything released before. If you like LZ and have a particular album you are fond of, I'd recommend at least getting that one and seeing/hearing what it's all about. Unfortunately not all the companion songs measure up to greatness. For example, the alternative version of Kashimir sounds 99.9% the same as the original. But there are some really great gems. Hang on....I'll be right back.....

Truthfully though, what I have heard mostly from the vinyl folks is that the hi-rez sounds equal to the vinyl. That's hard for vinyl freaks to admit I think. And I think that's hard because if they sound the same, then that makes the hi-rez better in my book. Of course you loose all the fun and experience of the vinyl, but you also loose the wear and tear, the hassles, and the pops and clicks.

The Jimmy Page remasters are excellent but to me the best sounding is still the Barry Diament 80s mastering cds. They are warmer sounding, and more enjoyable to my ears with the better dynamic range. If you don't want to track down the originals then go with the Page remasters. They are better than the 90s George Marino remasters. I have all three. The Diaments only get played on the home audio system. The other two I play in the car, and on my laptop at work.

Opinions will vary. Heck, the debates over which vinyl sounds better than another are crazy with details and variations of versions. What I will say is that when you start labeling the digital remasters, then you need to be slightly more specific or it will confuse some people. These last ones were not done by Jimmy Page alone. 80's CDs only = Barry Diament 1990 = George Marino supervised by Jimmy Page Mid 201x teens = John Davis supervised by Jimmy Page If you want to go further, then we need to bring Kevin Shirley into the discussion, as he did the remastered TSRMTS, Mothership, and HTWWW (of which Mothership is easily the undebatable worst mastering, and HTWWW isn't great either). According WIK, Jon Astley did the original BBC stuff in the late 90's. John Davis also did the Celebration Day release.

Thanks for info. What year Page remasters are u referring to? See one post up. I think he's referring to the new releases which were actually John Davis with JP supervision. What I will say about the new ones is that they are certainly the most "clear" and "veil lifted" sound. They sound the most "real," as if the guys are in the room with you sort of sound. Whether that's your cup of tea is up to you.
