So the boys finally got a real grammy. I'm happy for sure, BUT, I do feel like it's a bit ridiculous. They got it for Best Rock Album, for Celebration Day. First of all, it's a live show. I could be wrong, but I feel that Best Rock Album should be one of the studio variety, made from mostly if not all new songs. Second, while it was a great show and I loved it and all, and while it's probably their "greatest" concert ever, it's by far and away not their "best", and I'd say it might be one of their worst. What made LZ live so great was the improve, spontaneity, jams and variation away from the studio albums. Celebration Day is a super rehearsed "studio version" live album, and that's really not what the true LZ was ever about. Lastly, the sound mix on Celebration Day is much to be desired. It's far from the best live CD's I've heard (the Japanese CD is HORRIBLE!!!), and the Blu-ray/DVD mix is "movie done," with the mix all over the place. Bottom line, I feel they won just because they are LZ, and the O2 was their one big night to shine, and they did, and that fact can't be denied. They won on legend and reputation and all that. So, what I originally felt they should win for was Best Rock Performance for Kashmir. I was surprised to hear they won best album and not best performance. Some band called Imagine Dragon won for their song Radioactive, which, I have to say, I've never heard of them, or the song. I hope it's good. Guess I should go look for a link to get me up to speed. Anyway, grammy won. Now let's move on to getting these remasters out and about Jimmy.

youtu.be/ybirL3EtMb8Okay, just watched this Imagine Dragon clip. This does NOTHING for me what so ever. Zep's Kashmir blows this away. Not even close. My opinion of course. So the grammys got it turned around. youtu.be/PD-MdiUm1_Y

The main 2 groups of people who should buy Mothership are casual fans who have no Led Zeppelin in their collection (to get sort of a greatest hits), and collectors who need everything just because (that's me). Mothership was basically made to answer the calling from the industry for Zep to have iTunes 128 mp3 friendly tracks available. To do this levels were boosted and compression added, which, means loudness. No one I know of "in the know" considers it the best. Song wise, Mothership is almost an exact rehashing of previous 2 CD sets, the early 90's era "Remasters" (released in different countries under different guises around the same time as the 4 CD Boxed set) and the 2000 era "Early and Later Years" CD's. You might note that this thread was basically started to discuss the upcoming re-releases. Yes, upcoming. Jimmy Page has yet again gone through everything, and supposedly used modern mastering equipment and techniques to come up with what he is basically saying is the creme de la creme of Zep releases, the piece de resistance. These releases will also contain extra bonus material, to include alternate takes and perhaps even a few unheard gems. It's all speculation until we see it. Per Jimmy's website on New Years, the first batch will include the first 3 albums. What we don't know is if they will be available separately, or if it's a Boxed Set containing all 3, or both. They will be available in 2014. There is great trepidation for these upcoming releases. The recent release of Celebration Day brings that fear to the forefront, because the sound mix on those releases ranges from okay to down right crappy. And of course everyone thinks they want audiophile recordings of Led Zeppelin. But many are also worried that these new releases may ruin what the Led Zep sound was all about. Either too clear, remixed, too loud, edited etc. I happen to think that the clouded foggy roughness is part of the Zep sound, and to remove that veil will change things for the worse. But I am remaining positive until I hear it. I sincerely hope it's awesome, but we'll see. I'll be buying it all regardless. I've said this many times before and I'll say it again; it always cracks me up when audiophile people start discussing the sound of Zep. What I can say with 100% certainty, in my opinion of course, is that Led Zep is not audiophile perfection anything. There is nothing perfect to it. But you see, that's part of what makes it what it is. It's where the genuine honesty lives. Dave Lewis' fanzine sums the Zep sound up best for me with the name "Tight But Loose." As for which releases to buy now, that depends on who you ask. Do you want a greatest hits, just the best albums, or do you want all of it? Hi, I grew up during this period and have some very well played vinyl of LZ ,needs replacing ! I was wondering,,,,,,,would the Mothership be a good vinyl update or should I seek out new reprints if they can be had and at what price.? I know the music just wanted you opinion on the vinyl, not interested in the CDs,,,,I have CD os Zepp come out my,,,,,,,,,,,,he,,,,,,,,he,,,,,,,,, Nick

Not the very last one, but the 2 above that. I think they might help answer your question. Honestly, reportedly the best Zep vinyls are original pressings (especially the Bob Luwig Zep II), and the 200 Gram Classic records releases from like 10 years ago or so. I've heard the vinyl Mothership had the same issue as the CD's, as in it was more compressed and louder, so not so good. I own both the CD's and the vinyl, but have never cracked open and played the vinyl, so I can only go by what I've heard others say on the forum I'm on. If I were you, I'd skip it music wise. There isn't any confirmation yet, but it's rumored that the new up coming remastered releases will be put out in various forms, which I really hope means, CD, Blu-ray Hi-rez, and 200 gram Vinyl. But we'll have to wait and see I guess. My minimal advice to you would be to at least wait and see about these new releases. Mothership is certainly NOT "all that," so I'd wait. Hope this helps. Cheers ---- Bonzo

Hey Bonzo, were the same masters used for the vinyl Mothership? My vinyl version of Since I Been Loving You is better than my British vinyl, so I am surprised and confused (it is a little too early in the morning for dazed) to read about the set being done for iTunes! Trey Well I own both but you know, come to think of it, I don't know. I've never cracked open my vinyl. I know a guy who will know so let me get back with you. Okay, got the official answer back from a guy who knows what he's talking about ... "I have both the CD and vinyl versions. Yes, the vinyl was cut from the CD master, so it has the compression but sounds better (than the CD) nonetheless."

NEXT BIG NEWS.....
From discussions with John Davis, the guy in charge of doing the remastering....
"John Davis claims that there will be one large box set with all of the remastered Led Zeppelin albums"
"The O2 did indeed see the masters return....and the man given the task of mastering the sound for the album that followed was John Davis. In fact John had the job of remastering all of Led Zeppelin's back catalogue. As you can imagine, Mr Davis is rather delighted at having added his touch to a little bit of rock history, and I had the opportunity to interview him about the album."
And from a reliable source....
I didn't hear the thing about one box, but I did hear him confirm what I heard last year, that the tapes used were Jimmy's original mixdown tapes, which have never been used for mastering before.
He also said they're having the press in on Feb. 20 to do a press day discussing the new albums.
So hopefully we will all know more n February 20th 2014.

Jimmy releasing the new remastered catalog is like people here waiting on the XMC-1. I have three editions of each studio album, several box sets and compilations, and a bunch of live bootleg cds. I will be a wait and see for the reviews to come in. After the horrible The Mothership compilation remastered I really hope these are quality as they should be for as long as it took him.
Thanks for the heads up Bonzo.

Amazon UK
I'm afraid I've been burnt too many times with Zep rereleases, I'll be waiting for the reviews before I even think about it.
Cheers Gary

I'll keep ya all posted as much as I can, no problem there. I have my connections. I will also be buying all of it so I should be able to even give my own review. BUT, not on vinyl at this time. I am in desperate need of a new need turntable so that will have to wait. Although when I say all of it I must pause, because that might depend on how exactly it's released. They really socked it to me on Celebration Day with all the variations on the packaging. I think I wound up buying like 11 variations. Normally I buy otherworld wide stuff too, like say the UK version, Australia version, and Japanese version, but on C.D. that was just too much at the time. As it was I spent over $300, and that doesn't include the $330 I spent on the promotional blimp. If memory serves, here's how Celebration Day went for me (All U.S.A releases except where noted). 1. 2 CD digipack 2. DVD & 2 CD DVD packaging 3. DVD & 2 CD CD packaging 4. DVD & Bonus DVD & 2 CD 5. Bluray & 2 CD Bluray packaging 6. Bluray & 2 CD CD packaging 7. Bluray & Bonus DVD & 2 CD 8. Vinyl 9. Bluray HiRez 10. DVD-Audio HiRez 11. Japanese 2 CD (horrible by the way, terrible mastering sounds like hell, can't even listen to it) So as you can see, if the news today is all there is, we will already be up to at least 3 versions of each album. Deluxe Vinyl, Vinyl, and CD. Of course the CD could also be a deluxe and regular, which would then mean 4 of each. And me I'm still holding onto the wish they will do Bluray hi-rez, but we'll see. So it's going to be an expensive couple years for me in the way of Led Zeppelin. I'll go into bankruptcy if they put out promo blimps. Fun costs money right?

For Celebration Day I went with 5. Bluray & 2 CD Bluray packaging.
If the remastered catalog is actually worthy for yet another buy I will go with the box sets. Same as I did with the Black Sabbath and Dio that was remastered by Andy Pearce.

I mean who else do you know that has spent almost $2000 collecting vinyl beach ball blimps? Your plan would definitely make the most sense. I think maybe buying the CD and Vinyl boxed sets would be next. After that and it's looneyville where I'm from.

When it comes to music it is the same as audio. I have...err...try to keep myself in check so I don't go Bonzo. If I ever get around to getting back into vinyl then I will be going through the same LZ mayhem as I did for all the different mastering cds I have in my collection.

A bit off topic, was it the CD of Mothership that got the thumbs down, or the vinyl, or both. My copy of the vinyl was choice. It may still be, I still need to try rescuing it from the dunking from the Nashville flood! But I am listening to Since I Been Loving You now, a high res rip at least, and it beats the British Import copy I ripped substantially. It has greater dynamics and a quieter background. So I am a bit confused about the low opinion of Mothership. I can check them out on vinyl this weekend head to head, maybe I can get my best buddy and LZ freak Chris over to lend his opinion.
