My first "real" stereo was a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers, a Dual 1218 turntable with a Shure M91 cartridge, and a Sony TA1150 integrated amp. Connected with 18 gauge speaker wire and those thin gray RCA cables with red and white plugs. Bought it at Pacific Stereo in Santa Monica, CA.

I really miss those advent speakers. I assume by "Advent Legacy" you mean the original "Large" Advent speakers? This speaker requires honorable mention in any list of speakers. I have always considered it the VW of speakers with probably more units sold than any other speaker! EDIT: Nope I see that the Legacy was a later, but similar model!

A realistic receiver with those metal speakers... it was a handme down. The next one was a arcam integrated amp, phillips CD changer... things got upgraded from there. A magnum dynalabs tuner and marantz CD-63... then to Sonic Frontiers tubes... and vandersteens... then maggies... then to emo amps.

My first stereo was an unmemorable(in that I can't remember it) record player/8track player used in my bedroom while in high school. I had several Car stereos (starting with 8 tracks, it was great when cassettes took over) My first REAL stereo was a Dynaco Stereo 120, PAT-4 preamp, Tuner; Dual 606 Turntable and Speakerlab 3 speakers.

My first stereo was some sort of all in one, can't remember the brand. You know, the systems with the receiver and turntable in one box. Played that in my room for hours...
The first system I bought with my own money was from a place called Pacific Stereo. I picked everything out myself - Nikko receiver, Pioneer turntable, Teac cassette deck, Koss headphones, Century speakers. That lasted me thru college. My sister still has the turntable.

A Marantz 2220 receiver, a BSR turntable, and some house branded speakers (maybe Lafayette Radio?).

I think that whole first stereo cost me about $400. The ElectroVoice were a used trade in at my HiFi shop. If you adjust for inflation $400 in 1970 to today, it becomes about $2400 which is amazing! A UMC-200 and a UPA-700 would run $1100. That leaves a lot for speakers. I'd probably fill out the fronts first and use some junk for the rears to start. Ironic that you seem to get more for your $ today after adjusting for inflation!

First "real" system purchased between 1986-88:
Infinity Kappa 9's harman kardon Citation 25 Pre-amp harman kardon Citation 22 Amp (still have but needs some cap work) harman kardon Citation 23 tuner Denon DCD 1500II CD player (still have and works great)
If you mean first system ever it was 1977: Sears integrated receiver/turntable w/ speakers all in one system. Probably pumped out 10watts/ch. Speakers were really bad but could play loud enough to make mom mad - turn that thing down!

Hmmm. I think my first was a KLH stereo in a suitcase. Turntable and speakers that extended out. By the end of college I had a Dynaco Preamp I built, along with a Dynaco Stereo 70 tubed amp. A Dual turntable and AR 4 x speakers. Along the way I updated speakers to KLH bookshelf models, then the originals Advents. Moving forward I remember Dahlquist DQ-10s, some B&Ws, and for a long stretch Adcom Amps, tuner and preamps.
Memories. Quite a journey that continues ...

My first stereo was a beige colored molded plastic all in one unit made by brother the sewing machine people. It contained a tuner, turn table, and cassette deck. I played it until I blew the speakers out.
Then my real first stereo was a Sansui QRX-3500 quadraphonic receiver, an Akai cassette deck, a Dual turn table, and a pair of KLH Model 5 speakers. It rocked right up until the point somebody stole it.
