I want to know if this requires service or not. Please share your thoughts about it...

Have you always been able to "hear mechanical noise coming from the CD slot as far as 2 feet away"? Or is this a new experience? If it's a new noise/loudness then it possibly needs service. If it's always been like that then I'd suggest it doesn't.
I can't hear (or measure) the mechanical sounds from my ERC-3 over the ambient noise.
Cheers Gary

I can hear some mechanical "spinning" noise from my ERC3 when the CD first starts up. Because of the way my bedroom is set up, I always listen from a minimum of 4 feet from the unit. When the music is on and I am at that distance, I can not hear the noise. I have noticed the same level of noise from some other players.

I started hearing this noise last week when I happened to place my ear close to this player. It's a mechanical noise coming from the slot. You can only hear that noise the moment it starts to play the CD. Is it normal for ERC3?

If I am 2 feet away from this player with zero volume, the noise is still audible. But once you start turning the volume up, you wont hear it anymore simply because of the sound from the speakers of course. Is it really happening to you ERC3 owners?

Yes and for every other CD, DVD and BD player that I have ever had.

I notice that erc-3 is noiser than most mid to high end players. Why was it let to compromise on that ? Please please explain.

I recall a post that mentioned the transport spinning the CD at a higher rate than older transports. I can't remember the reasoning. Maybe someone else can dig up the post.

As a previous ERC-1 owner and a current ERC-3 owner I found that both players were as quiet as any other player that I remember having. With that said, If I put my ear to the player I can hear the disc spinning. If you listen to your music that close to the player then you're pretty much boned. Now, certain disc (for me, usually CD-Rs) make more noise than discs you buy pre-recorded from the artist (unless the artist is using CD-Rs and selling them out of the trunk of their car after the gig). This is a balance issue with the disc. Some players mask or otherwise compensate for those spinning turds better than others. There have been reports of the ERC-3 being noisier than other players, but I have not experienced that with mine.

I didn't comment before, as I haven't used by ERC-3 a whole lot, but it seems really quiet to me.. A crappy CD spins like crap.

Do you think ERC-3 needs a recall because of that mechanical noise?

Mine has not been noisy at all... on a par with my Oppo BDP-103. I don't doubt that some are noisy, but let Emotive take care of it. It doesn't seem widespread enough to force a recall.

I think there is another similar thread regarding this same issue of ERC-3. This is my first time to have a CD player with this kind of noise ever. If other owners will only have some time to hear that noise , then they can say that this machine needs a recall and as per me it is not normal.

I recall a post that mentioned the transport spinning the CD at a higher rate than older transports. I can't remember the reasoning. Maybe someone else can dig up the post. The noise could be a issue in a dead silent room, even tough minor.. When loading the CD it makes squeaky noise like mice. While playing there is humming noise of the motor inside which is not a major concern, but cannot be discounted knowing that Emotiva is known for making high end audio products and not something that is on par with off the shell $50 BD players. I am getting the impression that we are slowly being fed into low quality stuff that still sounds good, and someday that too would fall .. Hence I am asking the 'authorities' why they made such a compromise. A faster spinning transport, my a$$. If this is the noise it is making out of box, how will it be down the line after few years of daily use, which I will as it does sound fabulous ?

I believe that it was Lonnie that stated that the ERC-3's transport had a higher RPM. I'm not saying it's an issue, just that it is not identical to the older models.

To give you better understanding of the noise its not a continuous hum as in a fast RPM motor, but more of a fast knocking sound like that of a 2 stroke engine. When the CD stops the knocking slows down and you can heard the distinct knocks as it comes to a halt. I hope I am making sense.
So it sounds like something or the other is coming in the way. Whatever it is does make it look very cheap. This is sort of the thing Jeremy Clarkson pics on in Top Gear on high end sports cars. Being a Emo fanboy it does itch me that they built a terrific CD player by why skim on the transport noise.
