Man, I was about to buy an ERC3, has so many good reviews...this is a show stopper.... You shouldn't rule it out because of 1-2 people. Flawless for me.... Just like lots of other people.

Mine has no transport noise at all. Gary Yep, Mine is dead silent too. And THE BEST CD player I've owned. Alas, mine is among the noisy ones, too... maybe it is a bad batch... the noise does seem to vary according to disk, but all the discs are commercial releases... I've had it for a few months now, and it is a disappointment and is distracting unless I crank it, but I listen at civilized levels, so the noise of the transport does intrude on the listening pleasure. I haven't approached the Emotiva folk so far, but it's coming to that... and I also considered trading it back in and waiting for ERC-4... maybe I'll just call and see if I can get one like you guys. They must be well acquainted with the complaints by now... I like the unit very, very much, except for this distracting noise, which can't always be masked by volume.

Please send it back for service, so that we can settle once and for all what the cause is in the very small number that have a noise issue.
Cheers Gary

Man, I was about to buy an ERC3, has so many good reviews...this is a show stopper.... Did you find any bad reviews so far ? You would be beating yourself for not taking it. It is due to the merits of ERC-3 sound quality and made by Emotiva that the noise issue sticks out, otherwise it would not be big deal for anyone to expect humming from a low end product. The noise is not really an issue as you can't hear it from your listening position, its a minor annoyance that such came out of high end product. On the other hand not everyone has the noise. “Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don’t have any surface noise. I said, “Listen, mate, life has surface noise.”

Don't want to sound negative, but have you heard the audio file attached by owner? I consider that to be the worse news I can get. The question is : How other is this happening...is

I certainly haven't heard anything....

Since posting the audio file I have noticed that the noise from my ERC-3 is completely inconsistent. The recording I submitted was a worst case scenario and I have not heard the same extreme noise since. I can say with certainty that the noise is not a function of the disc as the CD used in my sample has not been that noisy since.

My experience is that if several people have this issue, I would have it too. It happened with my Outlaw 970 and the random freezing. It happened with my USP-1 and the remote volume that I just couldn't deal with. I guarantee that if I purchased a ERC-3 it would have the noise.

Because of all the posts, I went back to my ERC3 today and put discs in and out. PLayed a few and NOTHING. Quiet as can be. Anyone having noise issues really needs to call Emotiva. This should not be. It is the best CD player I have ever owned.

If people used the same logic when buying a car, nobody would buy one.

The transport motor noise is definitely present on my player. Fortunately most times I listen at fairly high levels so it is drowned out. The music the player makes is beautiful so I would not consider ditching it for this minor issue. It functions flawlessly and I know Emotiva stands behind their product so that if at any time I care to get it looked at they will do so without hesitation. I would refer anyone to buy this player!

Teman, no to start a big argument here, but it is hard hor me to understand that if a company "stands behind their products" why would they release a sub-optimal product? My ERC-3 is not "sub optimal" it does exactly what it supposed to do, silently, sounds fantastic and at an unbelievably reasonable price. Who knows why there are a few guys with drive noise? And yet there are multiples more with no noise? Maybe the noisy units were dropped in their delivery process and the drive mechanism bounced out of alignment? Maybe the bouncing around in the planes, trains and automobiles loosened the drive mechanism fasteners? Maybe in the assembly process one screw wasn't tightened to spec? Maybe in the assembly process one screw was over tightened? Until one of the 2 (or is it 3) sends their noisy one back for Emotiva to diagnose I don't think anyone knows. If I'm confident of one thing, it's that if it was a widespread problem Emotiva would be onto it like a flash. Cheers Gary

It is the best CD player I have ever owned. Me to. I bought the fourth CD player on the market in 1983 and have owned many since. My ERC-3 is impeccable.

I owned the very first Technics cd player way way back and have owned many many since. The ERC-3 is the best performing player I have owned. For the little bit of motor noise I can easily overlook it because the payoff is way worth it.

First post for me. I recently returned my first ERC-3 due to a continual electronic clicking noise while listening to CDs. I also noted that the mechanical drive was abnormally loud. I'm comparing it to my Oppo BDP93 DVD player which is dead quiet. I've just received my replacement unit and find the mechanical noise to be even louder than the first one. Even with the stereo cabinet doors closed I can hear the transport noise. I'm considering returning this unit and just going back to my Oppo for CDs. I'd rather not as I like the sound of the ERC-3 through the balanced analog inputs to the XMC-1. Is this noise acceptable or am I right in expecting better from Emotiva? Any thoughts?

My ERC-3 is dead quiet, as it seems are the vast majority. If it was me I'd give Emotiva a call first thing Monday morning and explain what you are hearing, record it on your phone if you can, and that it is the second one with similar noise. I'd most certainly ask whether or not they found anything wrong with the first one. Maybe it was something simple like it got severally bounced somewhere in the shipping process. They occasionally suggest that they take one out of stock and check the noise themselves, make sure it's quiet and then ship it to you. If it's noisy when it arrives then either you are extremely sensitive to it or there is some commonality in the shipping process. Maybe they are all get shipped to you in a non pressurised cargo hold and that's causing issues. I'd sure as hell like to know what it is that causes some, a small number, to be noisy. It can't be an inherent design issue as they would all do it, and plainly they don't. I seriously doubt that it's assembly quality control, but it could be batch related, but that's traceable.
Cheers Gary
