I'm with Gary. Even right next to the ERC-3 I don't hear anything in a quiet room. It sounds like there are unit-to-unit variations. If it is really loud and distracting the unit should be returned. I think the issues are coming in with the gray area between objections and quiet, as everyone has different rooms and enclosures.

I had one of the noisy ones... at first I tried to ignore it and play the music louder and/or get further from the unit, but after awhile, I began listening for it too much... and hearing it too much, so I traded it back in. A terrific player other than the roaring drive noise. I wondered if maybe the drive mechanism were a bit susceptible to shipping bumps and drops, so that maybe that helped to account for why some manifest the noise and others don't, but who knows... I'm waiting for ERC-4 :-)

What TRANSPORT does the ERC-3 use? A Sony? Sanyo? Philips? Hitachi? There are a few others, but these guys sell the most. I think Philips has dropped OUT of the market. They were the best….IMO.
That may account for the noise. Some transports may be noisier than others.

Well, it is a little perplexing.
In my case, some CD's exhibit this noisy mechanical playback noise (i.e. really audible across the room during quiet passages), and some CD's do not. The ones that do sound noisy sound fine on NAD, Onkyo, Marantz, Nakamichi (yes, from 1992)....I had bunch of CD players in at once to test them.
When I called Emotiva, a very friendly Tech told me that he would be glad to check it out if I wanted to return it, but that he seriously doubted that the "noise" could be fixed, and mentioned that in the ERC-3, they are utilizing a DVD drive. Thinking about this later: I think "native" speed for DVD's is faster? I think a DVD drive could be a smart choice in the sense that they will continue to be manufactured, and thus future availability of drives and laser heads is much more likely, but should they be noisier?
The really interesting thing is this: if there is that much vibration on disks that vibrate, doesn't that count as or cause Jitter? And if that is the case, how does the darned thing sound so amazing, because, at the end of the day, the ERC-3 blows the doors off of every other CD player I have pitted it against, even the much vaunted Marantz CD6005 (this is just my opinion, of course). To put this in perspective, a turntable with a motor vibration like this, would have trouble sounding good (the resonance would vibrate the tonearm and cartridge, and a lot of groove information would be missed.) Somehow, that isn't happening here, and the CD's sound incredible. I must not understand jitter. Anyone have any thoughts?

The reason the ERC-3 has a computer drive, is because its treating the "data" like the computer does. It uses the high speed drive to "strip" the data off the disc. Then clocks it out off of a RAM drive. This does a really good job of eliminating jitter.

Is this noise issue only on some units? I am in the market for a balanced source to use with my balanced headphone amplifier. Since I use headphones, I need to be relatively close to the unit, so prefer a quiet source.

Since I use headphones, I need to be relatively close to the unit, so prefer a quiet source. A small number of units have the noisy mechanisms. Mine being one of them. If you are listening via headphones you will never hear it at all. From a few feet away you probably will not hear it either. Fantastic player, and I would happily buy another if needed!

Some people seem to be more susceptible to the transport noise (obviously that's not me or I suspect the vast majority of ERC-3 owners). Some CD's seem to be more prone to generating noise (although I have over 300 CD's and I haven't found a noisy one yet). Maybe some ERC-3's are noisier than others (but when the few that have been returned are checked they are within spec). Possibly it needs all 3 above to be noticeable.
The 30 day return policy is there in case you are in that category.
Cheers Gary

Recently, I thought my 17 month old ERC-3 was making some odd noises. I researched and found this topic. Granted, there is an ever so slight noise when the tray opens and closes followed by a slight hum as the CD begins to spin but it drops off quickly. After that, I have to place my ear right on top of the ERC when the CD is playing. The amp and pre-amp are shut off to hear the CD spinning in the ERC. As I read this thread, I've shut off the pre-amp and amp and listened from 9' away and I couldn't hear anything from the ERC. I could hear the tray open and close from 9' away. In addition, I can't hear the ERC at all when any type of music genre is playing at a reasonable level.I don't know if my comment is pro or con to this topic. Emotiva has made me a staunch believer in their equipment. Your thoughts?

Has anyone got the same issue I have. When I advance tracks to the next song, I get a very loud grinding noise. It sounds bad. I do have the mechanical noise as well that everyone stated earlier in this thread. Looks like Emotiva hasn't changed anything since I just got it yesterday.

If you hear a "loud grinding noise" going from track to track with every CD you play, that sounds like a problem. If some CD's do it, and others don't, it could be the media and not the CDP. So, that would be the first question... I noticed the same thing with a CD that turned out to be quite scuffed and scratched (suspect it got mistreated in the car). Anyway, I would contact Emotiva service if every CD is doing that. They are very helpful.

All my CD's are in perfect condition as they stay in the case or the CD player. They don't travel at all. I will test a few more tonight to be sure but it did it with two different CD'd the first night I had it.

They will take care of you a lot faster than if you email them. They are swamped right now

I posted a new topic about this issue before searching the forum. My bad.
However, I can hear the transport noise between tracks, and my listening position is 12 feet away! Before considering a return, I may try to mask it by placing something on top of the unit.

Before considering a return, I may try to mask it by placing something on top of the unit. I remember reading a thread or post where someone with an ERC-3 had noise and sent it back. It was returned with a note saying they couldn't find anything wrong. It got worse so he sent it back in. This time they found a mount (of some kind) broken. It was replaced and the issue was resolved. I haven't been able to dig it up thru the search function yet.

My bad it was an ECR-2: Quote below: Jan 7, 2016 3:35:02 GMT -4 teaman said: I have had a noise issue with my ERC 2. The disc start up for play was very noisy, also around four tracks in during play the disc stuttered and skipped. It actually sounded like the disc was in a grinder there before I got it out of the slot loader. Ended up the spindle motor needed to be replaced. After receiving it back from Emotiva after service was completed I had to send it back as the disc insert slot seemed a bit off, also the noisy playback was still a bit of an issue. Ended up the second time they found the spidle motor table was cracked and they replaced that as well. Since I have had it back it works flawlessly. Tim
