Well guys, i have an xmc-1 for sale but in the meantime i'm giving it an audition (or maybe not). I have and had several preamps for my 2 ch only system under 5k (pre) and this pre/pro is in the same level as the well regarded Parasound JC2. I dont have any experience with the XSP-1, so maybe they sound similar but i'm only speaking for the XMC-1. I find the sound neutral, no thin at all, perfectly balanced and almost like gets out of the way in the signal chain. I'm using in reference mode and no dirac so and i can't imagine having all the extras for half the price of the JC2. Right now i have a primaluna that i love because of the musicality and also a Cary Audio solid state pre that sounds closer to the primaluna but with a little more detail and without the hassle of the tubes. I'm in a tough spot because if i dont sell it quickly i might keep it and have to face my wife's question, you are not supposed to sell that for my dad?

I have only heard an XMC-1 at the abode of Mr. novisnick. But I must say that it sounded world-class in 2-channel mode to me. I run an XSP-1 only because it offers bass management and sounds as good as anything else I've heard (including tube preamps from Audio Research, Dynaco (mod), and Jolida). I've also owned & heard solid state preamps from Classé, McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Bryston, and others. The only SS preamp I thought sounded better was the Mac, and it sounded only slightly better (and also lacked the bass management that the XSP-1 offers). So if your wife is hot on the Quicken spreadsheet, sell the XSP-1 BEFORE you listen to it. Otherwise, you'll want it. Boom

Just keep it and tell your wife it is very special to you because of your Dad.

Tell her it has to much sentimental value to sell.

It would also fit in with your avatar a lot better, so I agree with the others and you should think of buying it yourself.

In other words will the xsp-1 will give me the same sound?

If you ask for a special family discount, then the XSP-1 new might not actually be much cheaper! I say go for the XMC-1 as you can play with Dirac and it has bass management and may sound better in your setup. They did a great job on the audio side building the XMC-1 and it has a great Dac inbuilt. No phono stage though.

I currently own both. I believe that the XMC-1 is a sideways move when compared to the XSP-1 & DC-1 combo.
Are you doing vinyl? Do you do digital? If so, Do you have a DAC you like better then the DC-1?
We are talking strictly two channel, right? No HT.
Dirac will make improvements for HT over and above the XSP-1.

I wanted my system to be for music as well as movies. 90% is music listening though. I did try a couple of other more expensive preamps with HT Bypass with my XMC-1 but ended up selling them as I could not see the value for me in them. A wyred for sound and JRDG capri.

I like reference stereo with no processing Boomzilla should be able to give you an answer about the XSP-1 plus the Oppo 105. He has that setup. He wouldnt have it if he didnt like it! not doing any processing and no HT , then the XSP-1 should cover you ,,,,and make you very happy.
