So while wandering though the local Magnolia area of the Best-Buy store, I decided, on a whim, to buy their Tidal subscription (first 3 months free!).
I immediately came home and started pondering how I was to use it to stream music to my stereo. I know that my Oppo has a way to do it, but I'm not sure how to deal with an iPad as the remote control. I don't want to have to enable my projector every time I listen to music, and that's the only video output possible from my Oppo. Besides, the Oppo (despite being a great player) has a profoundly sucky interface.
I tried to download the "Tidal" app, but it said it needed at least IOS 8.something. My iPad is a generation one & doesn't go above IOS 5.something.
Does JRiver access Tidal directly? Is there another app I can use that doesn't require a recent version of IOS?
I'd like to have voice search, at a minimum...
So my system consists of:
Server computer in the computer room with current music library on a USB HDD (JRiver Media Center loaded on the computer) Combo internet cable modem / router connected to the music server Ethernet connection from router to "internet over AC" modem "Internet over AC" modem in the music room connected by cable to the Oppo BDP-105 and to an Apple AirPort Express WiFi hub iPad (generation 1) running the JRemote app connected to the server (through the previous) via WiFi
This works a treat when steaming audio to the Oppo, but I'm not sure how to integrate the Tidal into this setup.
Suggestions appreciated - Thanks - Boomzilla

I seen you have to download the Oppo app to use the Tidal streaming, I looked into it briefly but not sure I want to spend $20 a month for music streaming.

Creimes, remember that's 25 million tracks at CD resolution.... Not comparable to Spotify, Pandora or other low quality sources.
That's about the price of an album download per month.....

I know but why is it so hard to make a monthly "Payment" lol, it's like when my customers don't pay for the proper bandwidth they need for their home and I tell them hey you can upgrade for $10 a month and get double the bandwidth but they are hesitant lol, it's basically like 2 or Starbucks coffee's haha

Understand. But I listen to my system 6-8 hours per day, so that 70 cents per day is trivial for what I use.
It does seem inconsistent to spend many thousands on a fine system then confine it to music heard over and over again or of lower quality.....
Best,

Tidal is very convenient! I use it at home with an old iPhone 4 stream to an Airport Express and to my DAC. In addition, I can also listen to it at work on my android phone and also on my car system streaming from my android phone via Bluetooth. I hope you get the idea! Here is a screen shot from my iPhone 4

Also, the Oppo -105 should have Tidal and an app to control from there as well. Media app also Please ignore this lazy,,,,,late to the party guy!!!

Boom I have been using Tidal for months using my iPad ( 3years old) and APPLE TV (older version) the remote I use is the APPLE remote that comes with the APPLE TV. I also have the App on my four year old iPhone. Also, I used TIDAL.COM as opposed to going to the APPLE APP store and purchasing TIDAL as it is more costly. Apple increases the price by another $5.00. The access to the music and quality of your listening experience will increase dramatically. I listen to TIDAL for at least 20-25 hours a week. To me $19.99 a month is inconsequential.
Enjoy your free demo!

Using the Oppo's menus is NOT a feasible option for me. To see any menus from Oppo, my projector must be on & the screen down. When I listen to music, neither of these is in use.
Therefore, unless Oppo offers an iPad app, (do they?), then I need control from the iPad, period. I tried to download Tidal to my iPad (generation one), and the app refused to open, saying I needed IOS 8.x or later. I went to the Apple app store & found that my first-gen iPad will accept only up to IOS 5.x. Stalemate. Buy a newer iPad or find another app.
So:
The Tidal iPad app won't work (now or ever) on my existing iPad (requires IOS 8.x or later) The Oppo iPad app won't work (now or ever) on my existing iPad (requires IOS 6.0 or later)
BestBuy offers three free months when you sign up for Tidal via them.
I'm thinking that I may have to cough it up & just buy a new iPad.
Unless there is software that will work with both Tidal and IOS 5, then that is exactly the case. Nevertheless, I've owned the old iPad for years, and it's been functional without any glitch. Since I bought it used to start with...

Hi Boom: I think there is something I am missing in the set up you have in mind. The ipad compatibility issue can easily be resolved with the purchase of a newer ipad or ipad mini... What I need to understand is how you would stream the music to your stereo system from the ipad, if you do not want to have your OPPO on. It would be easier to see what options are available if that part becomes clearer

My JRemote iPad app allows me to choose the destination of the music stream. The Oppo is one of the recognized choices.
I'm assuming that the Tidal app for iPad will also allow me to stream to the Oppo? They're on the same network (ethernet to the internet & the Oppo, wireless to/from the iPad via AirPort Express).

Yes you can stream to the Oppo, but the Oppo has to be turned on, with the Tidal app selected for this to work, assuming I am not overlooking something in the configuration. If you can do that without the interference of your projector screen (which you would like to avoid, if I have read you correctly), then you're golden with the newer ipad.

I can leave the Oppo on and tuned to the Tidal option. Then I can turn off the projector & leave the screen up.
Then I can open the Tidal app on a new iPad & have a usable menu?
So let me ask a different question -
Can I install software on my server computer that will access Tidal and then stream it via DNLA to the Oppo? Could I control that software via the iPad I've got?

Yes that would work well. In fact, I just verified from my own system that the ipad Oppo app can directly engage Tidal on the OPPO as soon as you turn the Oppo on. The projector screen does not need to be on, unless, of course you need the projector display for something specific.
