I ordered an XPA-3 Gen3 about a week ago, and no "your amp has shipped" email as of this time. I'll be using it for my center and surrounds, and am now using two XPA-1Ls as I await delivery.

I was hoping that I would get it this week. My wife is out of town for the week, would have been easier to sneak it into the system lol

Here's a quote directly from one of our new Gen 3 customers... I just received it on our messaging system.
"Greetings... got my Gen 3-2channel early this morning.....running it non-stop for the last 8hrs....I know its not even close to a small burn in but I had to take a sneak peak listen.....running thru my Harmonic Light Dac to a BAT tubed preamp to a pair of magnepan 1.7i with two vandersteen subs and don't want to get too excited....but WOW this amp sounds Great!!!...had Gen 2(wasn't the the biggest fan and sold it) but this is a whole different beast!!...that's it for now....have more to say after I give it a full sun burn in....TRUTH!"
Sounds like we're off to a good start!! Cheers, Big Dan

Cheers Gary

Well, there is a settling period for electronics, and IMO this is mainly to allow electrolytic capacitors to reform. I believe a week of normal operation is ample for this purpose. Beyond this, I think it's kind of smoke and mirrors. I tend to buy a new unit and let it run for a few days just to allow it to settle in, and to make sure that it doesn't suffer from an early failure, which does occur.
After I've had a unit for a bit, I give it 15 to 20 minutes to warm up before "critical " listening. Power amplifiers in particular need to warm up a bit to reach thermal equilibrium and allow the bias to settle. The improvements are subtle, but real. Don't yell at me if you don't agree. This is just my opinion.
Now, loudspeakers are a different animal all together. They MUST be broken in. Never make buy/sell decision on a new loudspeaker until you have given it many hours of break in time. Our AMT's are a perfect example of a driver that really improves once it is allowed to break in. The improvement is easily heard! Woofers must have time for their suspensions to be "run in" to perform optimally.
As an example; we spend quite a bit of time allowing the new XPA Gen 3 amplifier warm up prior to setting bias. They spend 24 hours after being fully pre-tested in heat soak at 1/8 power. After this time they a fully re-tested to ensure they meet specifications on the Audio Precision. The bias on every channel is also checked and tweaked one last time, if needed.

Wow I am very curious about the Gen 3 XPA amplifiers. The more I hear here, the more I want to hear them. Awesome.

This is the info that I thought I heard/read mentioned about Gen 3's, that they already have "burn in" before they are shipped out, 24 hours of it. So I was under the impression that there would be very little "burn in" effect left to be heard. "Warm up" is of course a different subject, one that we shouldn't explore in this thread Cheers Gary

Dan Laufman - that's one of the most articulate things I've read about burn in. No fluff, no pseudo-science. Just physics and experience. I always groan when I hear burn in - but it's refreshing to see such a good answer. It's a tough topic to talk about without offending somebody..
