I asked mine the square root of 4 and it couldn't answer so I guess it's stupid.

The TVs are not stupid, just the people who buy them. I'll wait for OLED sets to drop in price.

The upscaling capabilities in 4k panels will continue to improve.
I bought a Panasonic VT60 which is one of the last plasma lines offered. It is ridiculously good so I'm in no hurry.

I'd just say that our new 4K, 65-inch TV has impressed my wife, who now often comments on how "clear" the picture is. Yes, it "up samples" everything to 4K, but the effect is fine with me. Once I dialed down the black level, the thing looks as good (though not as big) as my 1080p projector.
So the writers may not give it the thumbs up, but I like ours.

4K has its place, but it's not mass market yet. Blurays are 1080p and the best DVD.com offers. A high end gaming PC can do 4K in some games and some TV is broadcast in 4K, but otherwise content is too limited. A good quality 1080p TV is still adequate for almost everything, but in a few years UHD 4K DTS X will become the standard.
I still think 4K TVs are stupid today. Making comparisons to a poorer quality 1080p tv to a new higher quality 4K tv isn't fair too.

65 inch or bigger go with 4k, 55 inch or smaller go with 1080P

I almost don't have to read the article to know that 4K is not stupid. It is about evolving the breed. 16K viewing is already being talked about. I have seen some 4K and am entertained by the vivid detail, and substance over 1080P.
It would be like why would I want to have great dynamic range when my video camera is fine.
Well with LOG2, LOG3, you have 14 stops of dynamic range that fits nicely in REC709 the space flat panel TVs live in. I can take a flat profile and grade the video to a vivid lively cinema quality video that ordinary video cannot do. It is amazing when you compare the videos. I liken 4K video to post produced LOG3 after grading.
The thought of saying something is stupid because it does not fit ones reality denies everyone else's that it may. Do you need a 1000HP Corvette, or a rock crawling Jeep with 1200 foot pounds of torque? No, but usually these things come with other parts that filter down perhaps to fit a different reality.
Like disc brakes, advanced tire compounds, and so on. Good things come from things we stretch our selves for. That one thing or two that was created might make sense to you later, but not now. And that is okay. Making relevance is time based sometimes. And that too is okay.
A line from Star Trek. "Fresh minds, new ideas, be tolerant."

Good article. Wider dynamic range and color gamut are certainly good reasons for upgrading a TV. Resolution per se is not, unless you're sitting very close to the thing. Considering a 4K monitor for my PC. :-). Current vid card supports it.

As an owner of a 4K TV, I can tell you that they are not stupid. A true native 4K picture is pristine and clearer than a 1080p picture. The Samsung JS850D I own has access to 4K content via You Tube and some of the stuff there is breathtaking. I sit about ten feet back from my 65" screen and you can again easily see the improved quality between 2K and 4K.
It's not stupid. It's not a gimmick.
HDR makes an even bigger impression. Prices have dropped dramatically recently.
Having said all that,I had to buy a new set due to my 1080p failing and I felt that I should purchase the latest technology at the lowest price possible so as not to be behind the curve. I tend to keep a set for many years.
If you don't have to buy a new set, I would give it another year for some of this stuff to stabilize and mature.

Absolutely agree. My old TV was long overdue for an upgrade - and I replaced it with a new 50" 4k model (not HDR) - I got the Samsung JU7100. Even the upsampled picture is spectacular - and MUCH sharper than the picture on my previous (smaller) Vizio set. And, yes, it's obvious from seven or eight feet away. (And the picture with the one or two existing real - low compression - 4k demos out there is downright scary.) I don't have a super-dark room, but it's a plain old LED lit LCD set, and the black level is plenty dark in my living room. Because HDR is still in flux, and OLED is both expensive and still largely unproven, I wouldn't spend a lot of extra money for a set with either today...... But I needed a new set, and the 4k set was only about $500 more than an equivalent HD set. Note that, if you're planning to use a TV for a computer monitor, be sure to get a model that supports 4:4:4 chroma subsampling at 4k. (4k discs don't support 4:4:4, and it really doesn't matter for video, but, for still pictures and computer images, it avoids color fringing on white lines and text.) Also, if you buy a Samsung, check out their "cast" app (I think it's called Smart View; it's free).... which lets you send files from your computer to the TV over your network. Note that the cast app sends the file to the TV, which decodes and plays it, so, for example, it can play 4k files over the TV, even if your computer and graphics card aren't 4k. Also note that it really likes a wired network for high-res files and, even then, some high-rate 4k files are iffy.... but it works very well for HD stuff. Also note that Samsung TVs seem to have pretty good file compatibility when it comes to playing a variety of file types from a USB stick. As an owner of a 4K TV, I can tell you that they are not stupid. A true native 4K picture is pristine and clearer than a 1080p picture. An LG UHD-OLED at 55" costs about the same today as my 52" Sony XBR LED cost when I bought it ten years ago.

I am not supposed to be able to hear the diff between mp3s and cds, but I can. Most of you can too.
I am not supposed to be able to see the difference in 4K set unless it is huge or I am up close, but I can.
Go to Sam's Club or Best Buy and look for yourself. If you see no improvement, think of the money you saved!
