This is a new development..wow. I'm not worried about the balanced out for the height channels. So is it user selectable to use both 5.2.4 and 7.2.2? I wonder if those wizards can squeeze out 7.2.4 somehow... 7.2.4 is not possible on the current XMC-1 without replacing major hardware parts of the unit because two outputs are missing. I find it already a great trick that Ray and Lonnie are able to use the second zone output for height channels. From Dan's post I'm under the impression that it's the Z1 (main) 'mix down' output, not the Z2 'Zone 2' output. I would have to rethink my answer if it was the Zone 2 output.

That's what I'm talking about. Can't wait to use my upgrade for life on the XMC-1 now.

I've used the zone 1 "mixed down" output once to make sure it initially worked, so re-purposing it to go 5.2.4 only sweetens the upgrade for future usage. I was in for the initial upgrade path, so this just makes it more of done deal for me. Great idea Dan/Lonnie/Ray!!!

I believe this is a great way to allow XMC-1 owners to get a really immersive 3D surround experience with no real downside. It is our belief that people rarely use the down-mix feature of the XMC-1. Agreed? I'm a user of the down-mix feature and it was a key selling point for me. I use the digital out, not the analog outs. Would this be impacted at all? I have 7.1 so 7.1.2 has some appeal, but not at the expense of my other zone. -tm

I don't own an XMC-1 but I think that is a great option for those that do. Great job! Same here but willing to forego my back surrounds [as ears prefer a front soundstage] to get better panning with the 4 ceilings and the best thing is I wont have to send an xmc1 back to the US for the upgrade [ hopefully the full hdmi2.0a with HDR pcb will come 1st ] so it will be fully loaded :)Also a newer better algorithm than pl2z/x for upmixing non atmos titles In any case this will do more than nicely while the RMC1 is worked on . The arcam avr's just became very overpriced down here in Aus in comparison

It changes my vote. I had voted "not interested"... but this is starting to pique my interest.
EDIT to add: .... especially since I don't even know what the down-mix feature is.

Awesome news. Was pleased about 5.2.2 to give Atmos a try. Now 100% happy and will probably try both 7.2.2 and 5.2.4 and see what I like the most. From what I've read the .4 is of most benefit so the Backs will most likely go. Good going guys, will make the XMC-1 stay in my possession even longer.
Haven't seen it mentioned, I assume we can have dirac on all channels?
Will start looking out for a two channel amp
Any chance of getting a UK partner involved in the upgrade to save on shipping costs

It is great news for xmc owners.

Zone 2 will still function as is.
I'm heading to Munich to meet with a potential UK distribution partner in two weeks. Fingers crossed!
We'll have lots more to talk about on the XMC-1 upgrade as we firm up all of the technical stuff.
This is definitely happening.

I am very happy to hear this upgrade will happen! I am looking forward to it. As much as I would like the 16 channel processor in a room that is only 12x14 the xmc-1 upgrade will be perfect to get a taste of Dolby atmos and dts x. Thank you for this exiting news!

Yes, this is great new indeed, thanks Dan. I am eager to see the implementation instructions to see if it's something I can do at home. That would be terrific! Now I need to decide what's better, y splitting to include the rears so I have 7.2.4 or just stick with 5.2.4! Oh, and I do love you even more now than before!!

Hey Dan, did you mention how Dirac will work after the upgrade? Will it exclude the new height channels but be enabled for all others?

I hope Europeans Emo owners could update. the unit without having to spend tons of €/$ in delivery to USA. Good news.

I hope Europeans Emo owners could update. the unit without having to spend tons of €/$ in delivery to USA. Good news. Since Dan said "there will be no cost for this upgrade" I'm assuming that its all done in firmware; therefore no need to return the unit to Emotiva. Russ

I'd also be interested to hear if Dirac will function on all channels used in this new configuration. Will it be a hardware upgrade requiring the XMC-1 to be shipped to Emotiva or a firmware upgrade?

Hi all, Well, what a week this has been!! Last time we talked about the Atmos/DTS-X upgrade path for the XMC-1, it appeared to be limited to 5.2.2. But, Ray and Lonnie went back to the drawing board... and I have some great news!! The boys have figured out a way to add 5.2.4 and/or 7.2.2 capability to the XMC-1. In order to do this, we would re-purpose the the mix-down outputs on the XMC-1 and make them the second pair of height/surround channels. Now, they would be not be balanced, but hey, something's got to give. All in all, I think it's a very nice idea! I believe this is a great way to allow XMC-1 owners to get a really immersive 3D surround experience with no real downside. It is our belief that people rarely use the down-mix feature of the XMC-1. Agreed? So, let me hear from you, please. Does this change the equation for you?? Does this make it a more compelling add-on?? Are you happy?? Does this make you love us even more than before?? Thoughts?? Cheers, Big Dan if i try to go 'immersive' in my living room….. the wife will immerse me in something quite unpleasant. as for me….. 7.2 is just fine. tchaik………..
