...Why would you think it would not be? There are two fully programmable Ti processors in this thing... Yes, but there are TI DSPs and then there are TI DSPs. Unless something has been, or will be, updated, the processors in the XMC-1 are from the DA-7xx series line. I could be wrong here, but I'm under the impression that you need the newer DA-8xx series chips. More importantly, doing Atmos or DSP is rather processor intensive. I strongly doubt that a pair of DA-7xx chips could simultaneously handle the base-line Dolby and DTS decoding AND the standard post processing/bass management AND implement the filters or whatever needed for Dirac AND then do Atmos or DTS:X all at the same time. Look at the processor complement for products that don't do Dirac and then factor that in. That is a LOT of number crunching that may take more than four cores. ...Anything less and they should not use the words Atmos or DTS:X in the releases. Now, as in the first instance above, I could easily be proven wrong here, but in the first post from Dan in this thread he specifically does NOT say "Atmos" or "DTS:X". Again, in fairness to what he said, doing 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 is VERY different than decoding and processing NATIVE Atmos and DTS:X bit streams. I haven't seen any releases where Emotiva says they will in the XMC-1, but I've very willing to be proven wrong with a pointer to a specific release. As I just saw in the post above, if there was mention of the necessity of paying royalties, then perhaps it is the "real stuff". I guess we'll have to wait for another podcast.

here is a little something from Hometheaterhifi.com: "The Emotiva XMC-1 was on display along with an upgraded HDMI board which allows the XMC-1 to support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. This will be appreciated by anyone wanting to pass 4K video through the XMC-1. Emotiva also confirmed that they will be offering a Dolby Atmos and DTS:X upgrade for the XMC-1. The upgrade will be available late summer. The Dolby Atmos enabled XMC-1 will support speaker configurations up to 5.2.2. channels, which means support for one pair of height speakers. The Dolby Atmos upgrade will also come with another HDMI upgrade to provide support for HDMI 2.0a and HDR."not sure if the board is an absolute requirement to get ATMOS/DTS:X for the XMC-1, but it might be. it depends if they wrap it all up together, the board and the software upgrade. time and Big Dan will tell.

I did, and that is the point. I don't want to put words in Dan's, or anyone else's mouth, but the post reads: ...The boys have figured out a way to add 5.2.4 and/or 7.2.2 capability to the XMC-1. In order to do this, we would re-purpose the the mix-down outputs on the XMC-1 and make them the second pair of height/surround channels. Now, they would be not be balanced, but hey, something's got to give. All in all, I think it's a very nice idea! By the way, I also think it is a "nice idea". Again, fully willing to be proven wrong, that DOES say they have added the channel capacity via mix down, which is quite clever. OTOH, observing Dan through the years, one has to imagine that if this specific upgrade added REAL Atmos and DTS:X he would come right and and say it. The fact that he hasn't, at least as one sees here, tells the story to my mind. Dan is a smart guy; if he could he would be correct to say the "magic words". That he chose not to tells the tale. Fully willing, and even hopeful, to be shown that I am wrong here. The answer to this has to come from Dan and/or Lonnie.

I'm sure they got that info straight from Big Dan so, no, I'm good, thanks. I posted this mostly because folks were wondering if it's gonna be "real ATMOS/DTS:X and I'm hoping this addresses that. also, I wanted to show that there is a hardware upgrade that will be made available. like I said, whether the HDMI board upgrade is separate and apart from the ATMOS/DTS:X upgrade is yet to be know.

I'll go this far, if it's NOT Atomsor the equivalent technology ,,,,,,,,,it's just a waist of time and effort PERIOD.

2muchht, The initial 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos Poll thread that Dan had started(which was deleted as to not confuse this updated Dolby Atmos upgrade with that), in that initial thread Dan had mentioned the newer DA-8xx series chips as part of the upgrade, so I'm more than sure Dolby Atmos/DTS:X will be implemented correctly.

Thanks, and as promised, I now stand (OK, sit) corrected. Not having seen the deleted post in an earlier thread I was not able to see the full story. Perhaps there is some way to except that information and re-post to avoid future confusion.

The Dolby Atmos upgrade will also come with another HDMI upgrade to provide support for HDMI 2.0a and HDR. Good find solardadd ; heartening that the quote associates the hdmi 2.0a upgrade with the atmos upgrade ; reads like its one complete process? Anyway best to wait for the details from Dan

Will this update enable the unit to decode and reproduce "official" Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks or will it simply downmix and re-purpose non-Atmos or DTS:X tracks? It sounds as though it is the latter, not the former. If really the former, that would be great. When we say we are adding the ability to decode Atmos and DTS-X, that is what it means... Geez.

Please stop this stuff. What should be the purpose doing a half baked upgrade for DTS-X and Atmos? Don't worry about what DSP's we may or may not use, we know what we're doing.
As I have tried to explain previously, we will add new DSP capability to the existing XMC-1 in order to support Dolby Atmos and DTS-X... natively. We now see a design path to support 7.2.2 on the existing platform.
We will want to add Dirac to the extra channels, and there is no major technical reason this can't be done. Allow us to get a little further along, and as I have all said, we will be able to answer your questions in more detail.
No need to sit here and worry needlessly. We wouldn't bother to do it if it was not the real deal.
Cheers, Dan

Great! Right when we settle down to gripe about something, Big Dan comes in and takes it all away.
Why can't they leave us to our self-loathing?

Why would the HDMI board be required to implement Atmos? I do agree that if they release a new HDMI board that has more than 1 input HDMI 2.0 and provides a bundle upgrade deal that we can do to keep our XMC-1 "current" that would be nice and clean. The late summer timeframe appears to be the biggest challenge I see in that press comment considering that it'means they have to complete their technical designs, build, test, then mass produce in 4 months. Very tight timeframe. Maybe by the end of the year it'll be ready - not bad for a small audio company!!! For me personally, while they are in there, if they just completely uncouple the unbalanced outputs and use those for the additional Atmos / DTS:X channels than sky is the limit. Well 18 channels (including sub outs) is your limit. This of course is my dream but 5.2.4 or 7.2.2, I'll take! Just didn't like 5.2.2. Thanks boys at Emo blue HQ!

You know thinking if Bonzo -kudos- hadnt posted his xmc2 poll we may not be at this happy juncture ; feedback is a good thing Wow! I take a full weekend off the internet and look what happens. I miss super exciting XMC-1 news!!! This is fantastic. Really great. Thanks Dan Laufman for listening to us fans and taking some time to reinvestigate this to see if it was viable. Even if it weren't viable, taking the time is appreciated. The fact that it is makes a lot of people very happy. I've not bought an XMC-1 yet, but it's now on my very short Christmas list for sure. I believe having 5.2.4 - 7.2.2 capability will be a great upgrade and will make the XMC-1 an even better seller for you. Thanks again. cwt, thanks for the kind words. But I'm not going to take any true credit here. I think a lot of people helped push the issue to the fore front, and it was Tony's ( ansat )original idea. I did push for it though, because I thought it was not only important for us buyers, but also important for Emotiva's future to keep the XMC-1 relevant. I received ill gotten flack from some for doing so, but I'm glad I did it now, because as excited as I am for everyone else, I'm more excited for me because now I can buy an XMC-1 without any reserve. We won. I agree, feed back is a good thing. And having Emotiva listen is even better.
