Never seen a picture that shows the material that the Airmotiv monitor cabinet is wrapped in. It looks like a fine leather. Like a nice black leather belt or jacket. They are not just black. They have a beautiful leather texture. You can see this clearly in the light.
The silk smooth black powder coat on the faceplate will show fingerprints but is very easy to clean. You can clearly see the AMT but the yellow does not stand out as it does in pictures. The woofer cones are very dramatic looking in person. The phase plug gives it a very cool look.
A strait on look and the angles seem to disappear in shadow. The speaker looks different from different angles.

I couldn't keep waiting for these Emotiva speakers to come out so I sprung for a pair of Klipsch KLF 30's today. I found a near mint pair local to me so I felt I had better jump on them. I also picked up a near mint KLF-C7 center channel to round it all out.

There is nothing like a great wood finish when done right. I never get tired of looking at these: To me they are like a good looking woman - easy on the eyes - and if I ever find one that is as easy on the ears as the song towers are I'll get married again!!!

The reason I want these new Airmotiv's is for the tweeter they have. I am in love with the sound they put out on my Airmotiv monitors. I have not heard the ribbon design before and would also like to hear the RAAL tweeter like Salk and others use now. I have a feeling that is why they are getting good reviews. I want to hear about what @roryb is working on. What is the T-10 ? Is Emotiva working on something else other than the T-10 ?

Those are Salk's knucklehead ? Jim Salk makes wood look good ! Everyone I have shown them too goes Wow. When I would look at the Salk HT3 and think about getting them my thought was I would like them in basic flat black. I know ! That's just me.

Definitely some good looking speakers. However, some people (like myself) are more budgeted and thus are fine with less fancy looking speakers with more money put towards the sound.

Hey Axis, Big Dan had chimed in that another passive speaker was coming down the line with larger drivers. Sounds like a pair of 10 inch woofers or something along that line paired with a midrange and the folded tweeter. Exciting times for Emotiva. I have been wanting some Klipsch KLF's for a while now so the local guy willing to deliver them meant a lot to me. I will have to get some of my hoard of extra speakers put up for sale now...hahaha Tim

Salk does an excellent job on the finish. I like the dark edges. Makes it easier to hide the inevitable dings on the edges. A black magic marker does the job. It might take some time but if you wait patiently you might find a used pair. I bought these from a forum member here plus a custom made Selah Audio 3 way center channel speaker for less than a new pair of standard issue song towers would cost. I've been looking for over a year when these popped up. I feel very fortunate. These things are awesome - and do not require a sub to round out the musical spectrum.

Only the hint from Dan. Everyone that has been here awhile knows how those hints can change. I would love some big Active speakers for a Emotiva price. Good ones cost 10 to 20 thousand a pair.

IMHO high gloss speakers in a HT room is such a distraction!! Light from wherever reflects way too much for me.

Personally, unless a speaker is so butt-ugly that it is a distraction, I don't care what they look like. I really only care what they sound like. That said, I have seen speakers so freakish that they look like egg wisps or sea shells or some other hideous thing. For me, these would have to sound heavenly to even consider. Most speakers looks like speakers and don't distract me. My Maggie's border on freakish...being so tall and wide. But the muted metal sides and matte black socks make them disappear as I listen. And the sounds takes me away. That is what matters to me.

Just make sure the cabinets are solid as the 20's and 30's had a run of cabinets that weren't properly braced and glued. You'll know if the cabinets rattle at reference levels. Congrats on a great pickup.

Thanks LC, yeah, I inspected them and they are in A+ condition. No rattles, loose backs or anything. I am really looking forward to getting it all set up. I am going to keep the other four B-3 speakers for heights and surrounds and they match up quite well. Always fun inviting in new members of the family.

These cabinets are not only pretty but there is also engineering behind them. I believe that's the case with every cabinet made for speakers. If a design that benefits the sound also ends up looking nice, great. However, I'm sure that finish, which doesn't affect the sound, contributes a good amount to the cost.

That is why I own speakers without a cabinet...
