Is there any advantage to connecting my sub (which does not have XLR input) with an XLR to RCA cable such as the Monoprice 6ft Premier Series XLR Male to RCA Male Cable over an RCA to RCA cable?

None. Unless you have very long runs but even then I'm not sure if it really makes a difference. In that case, XLR-XLR would help. But when you're converting RCA-XLR, I'm not sure if there's any benefit. In fact, there are move "moving parts" so to speak.

I haven’t checked for a firmware update on the MC-700 in years. It’s been working well for me.
