Hi all, as you can see by my number of posts I am not a "message board" person.
My ERC-1 has swallowed a disc and goes from "loading" to "no disc". It's old but has seen very little use.
E-mailed and phoned tech support ,tried the power off reset they recommended and turning it upside down and on it's side as found on the forum. No joy.
Another call to Emotiva tells me they no longer service these. Sending it back to them to free the disc would cost more than the disc itself.
I pulled the cover off and the disc is clamped to the spindle while the arms are trying to push it out, I'll need a 3 blade screwdriver to go any farther.
Has anyone been successful at freeing a stuck CD or possibly getting it running again on your own?
I hate to have such a heavy, expensive paperweight.
Thanks in advance.

One thing I can suggest is to turn the unit on its head and give it a smack! Seriously, that may free up the disc. P.S.: Don't forget to unplug it before you spank it!

I had a similar situation with one of my ERC-2 slot loaders. My disc got stuck inside and it would not read it, nor would it eject it. I finally got the disc out after about two hours of swearing and fumbling. The disc itself was damaged and would no longer play anywhere. I sent the player in and they found the spindle motor was broken. They sent it back to me and it immediately swallowed another disc. I sent it back the second time and the spindle motor table had split. Once they repaired this all has functioned flawlessly since. If you have any interest in spinning discs in the future it may well be worth the cost to send it in. Good luck!

Shipping would be more than the disc is worth. (They offered to free the disc if i would send it in.) I'm trying to decide on a ERC-3 or a used ERC-1 (there's one on the board) or something else if I can't get it going again.

Okay, I was thinking you wanted to not only free the disc but also get the player working again. I honestly couldn't have given a rats a** about the disc lodged in the player I wanted my player back.

I would like to get it going again, that was why I posted in the first place, was wondering if anyone had good luck getting it going again without Emotivas help as parts don't seem to be available anymore. Thanks for the reply, I guess I'll have to look at other options.

Search around the Lounge. A while back there was a post where someone had found a source for the Toshiba slot loaders that are used in the ERC-1. If you can get your hands on one of those you may be able to swap out the entire mechanism and get your player back up and running. Good luck.

Thanks, I didn't know Toshiba made the slot loaders, I'll look into it in a bit. I'm going to take it apart and have a look see, I figure it can't hurt as Emotiva has said they can't repair them anymore. It would seem ERC-2's are still in warranty, I guess the loaders are different. I would pay for a upgrade to a ERC-2 loader but I guess they won't fit or they would have offered. Thanks for the reply.

Oh well, maybe he would like to play some of his CD's in his CD player, duh! Oh and maybe he doesn't want to take the time to mess with loading them to his computer. However, great suggestion!

Why not rip your cds lossless to your computer and play from there? Computer is not hooked up to the audio system, I would have to re-rip all my CD's to FLAC or something else, maybe one day. A music server is something I would like to work on, but right now I'm a CD player guy.

Some people.......many people, still enjoy physical media. Myself being one of them. 90% of the music I listen to is streamed, whether it be in the house over the whole house audio, through my little BT speaker out by the pool, in the car, or through my ear buds at the gym.
That being said, when I really want to listen to music, when I want to slow life down a little bit and step back in time a few years, maybe pour a drink and settle in; give me a stack of jewel cases and disc player. Not something I'm giving up anytime soon.

It's just data, ones and zeros on that disc being played on an increasingly worn laser.....but if that plastic is satisfying, then.....

It's amazing to me how audio folks will sit around ad nauseam and debate over hearing over-embellished differences between amps, or DACs, or, well, CD players, yet question one's liking of physical media over streaming from a computer.
I like shifting gears in a sports car, I like heating with a woodstove, both acts that have gone way of the dodo bird. There is however a certain nostalgia in doing things that, even though there's a simpler way, just bring more enjoyment vs. their more modern or simplistic alternatives.
Just the way it is.....
