I want to upgrade to 4K but have been holding off mostly because of costs.I will need to upgrade both display and source. On the source side I looked at the Samsung and Panasonic offerings but decided that I preferred to wait and see what Oppo did.I have seen some pretty good prices on 4K LCD but I really would prefer OLED and in a large screen size.65 inch LG OLED while improving is still kind of pricey.
On the content side I am pretty much dismissing any streaming options because of issues in delivery and reports that it isn't all that great generally. That leaves discs which is just fine with me because my old self is a physical format fan anyway. The problems with UHD discs are options and cost.I have no plans to upgrade films that I already own to the new format with the possible exception of a handful of favorites should they become available. The selection of movies currently available on UHD isn't doing much to excite me and the pricing stinks.
They wanted me to pay a premium for Blu-ray over DVD and now they want another premium for UHD over BD.Cost just keeps escalating and my finances can't match the rate of escalation.A perfect example,a while back I was actually thinking about buying Chappie in 4K but found that I could purchase a three film Blu-ray set with Chappie,District 9 and Elysium for less money.Three films instead of one and a lower cost on top of it.Guess which I chose?
4K is something that I want but not an absolute necessity.Real world value for my dollar is a big consideration.I have the idea in my head that I will likely upgrade by buying the player first since it also serves as a BD player, buying discs very selectively since they also include the BD copy and waiting to upgrade the display last since it is the most costly component and to give OLED more time to drop in price.

Already have one, I prefer 3D if its done right. Wearing glasses makes 3D unbearable. I think you are the only person that raves about 3D Nick but I am glad you enjoy it 3D is also not so great if you are one of us unfortunates that does not have very balanced vision between left and right.Perhaps that is part of what teaman meant? My right eye is so much weaker, even with glasses, that it just does not work well for me.

This is getting a little silly if you ask me. I am still buying DVD and only buying Blu-ray when it includes DVD. I do not see any difference with my OPPO 103 and samsung 1080p plasma TV. When the gear and media is in play and the cost is not overblown it may take hold. I bet many out there are satisfied with what they have and times are tuff financially for most. $800 for a new phone has got silly as well. When are they going to learn that if they can bring the price down and make it reliable they will improve there sales. Stop this trying to go to the better future so fast. It sounds cool and all the tech folks love it but I think they are leaving there consumer behind. you dont see difference between dvd and bluray? time to 1) get your TV calibrated 2) get your prescription eyeglasses updated I agree, I have 1080p projector with a 106 inch screen, awesome, although my receiver can up convert to 4k, I am still not getting a 4k projector, the difference is not worth 5 or 6 grands, if I ever have the chance to double the screen size that is when it would be worth it...

The difference between DVD and bluray is like cleaning a dirty window. It's that clear
The difference between Br and 4K is more about the WCG and HDR than the clarity. Although the clarity is apparat on large displays.
Axis If you don't think there is difference you are being an opposition view just for the sake of being different and rogue. It's nonsense

Of course there is a difference. .. I don't see it. I don't either on a small, say 55 inch screen, but I do on my 106 inch screen.

You guys see the gear I am using. It is not for a lack of proper gear. I use the latest Emotia X series high speed HDMI cables to go directly from my OPPO to my Samsung plasma. I sit 10 feet from my display and if I did not know if it was DVD or Blu-ray it would not make a difference. I see the same picture for the same movie no matter if it is DVD or Blu-ray. Over and over again. There is a lot of folks that will tell you that.

In the same breath if you watch older movies on Bluray they will most likely remain unimpressive.

I have the 1939 film series of Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray box set with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and when I watch it, it is not about picture quality. Some of the most enjoyable entertainment and stories ever made is all I think. I am not siting there thinking how am I going to tell a bunch of people online how I think it looks on me High Def TV. People online need to ask themselves why they care so much about there picture quality and why they are not enjoying good entertainment instead.

Well there a as many Videophiles as there are Auidophiles. I know guys that are way more into the picture than they are the audio. Me? I'm the opposite, audio 80% video 20%. I watch movies for the audio track lol

Over and over again. There is a lot of folks that will tell you that. I have a 43" Samsung plasma and don't see a difference but then on a smaller screen like that I wouldn't expect to. Not only that but I think as with recordings, it depends on the program material that you are watching. I don't sit there, switching back and forth between a BD and DVD version to try and figure out which one looks better. Most of the time, DVD is just fine. But these days BD is often cheaper than the DVD so why not just buy the BD version? If I'm watching something good then I get engrossed by the content. Sure, a good picture is a plus but having "only" a DVD versus a BD, or a 4K TV and 4K movies is not a deal breaker for me. Picture quality is also dependent upon my eyesight, and my eyesight ain't that great, either.

And just that you make an argument by telling me what hdmi cable you use (which doesn't make the slightest difference) tells me all I need to know. No need to discuss further. Smh

I am happy with my plasma 1080P ability and the sound quality is fantastic so I don't have complaints either way. I don't care if you enjoy the movie or not, that is not the topic here. There are plenty of crappy movies that sound and look good but also plenty of movies that the story line rocks yet the sight and sound suck. I just thought this was about 4k and if it was an improvement of what you "saw".
