Plus it's big and ugly. It's HUGE!!!!! At 11" dia it's almost as big as my 13-1/2" ............. I reread my post and I think no matter how you say it, the words "so what" always comes across a bit crass. I didn't mean it like that. What I should have said is something more like, do you think that really matters for an outside portable environment? From my experience, I have to say I've found I prefer a more mono like sound while outside on a patio etc. To get stereo, the speakers have to be a ways apart, and then if you actually walk around you get funny sounding music because you can literally hear 80% one channel and only 20% the other. I'm not interested in getting some perfect sweet spot in that environment. It's part of the reason I've never installed permanent patio speakers. I've actually read many articles where installers prefer mono set ups to stereo ones for in house ceiling speakers, and I think this same holds true for outside. Since you commented on it, what do you think? Back on topic, for 50% off the regular price, if I needed or wanted computer style speakers for an office or a small room, I'd say this is a pretty good deal from Emotiva.

I agree with you, for outside use I don't think mono versus stereo makes much difference. If you're at an outdoor concert, unless you are right up near the stage it's going to sound mono anyway. I just ordered a pair of the 3b's myself a few minutes ago. They have to sound better than my laptop speakers!

UPDATE: I bought the Onyx 3. It arrived today and after listening to it for all of 5 minutes I packed it up and shipped it back to Amazon. The unit is very well made and looks very nice but the SQ is awful IMO. I'm not expecting audiophile quality sound but the Onyx 3 left a lot to be desired. The highs were missing, the midrange was veiled and muffled and the bass was distorted even at moderate volumes. They could have done so much better. I'm a little disappointed.
Just ordered the Fluence Fi50. We'll see how that works out.

Hi,
Is there a way to connect this to my laptop other than via wireless? My laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.
Thanks.

I just bought a pair this weekend at the liquidation price. Plugged in TV to increase the sound quality of the flat screen that's originally awful, because we don't want to always turn on the home theater when we listening TV show or news. WOW the results is astonishing, those little speakers are very good and capable of handling music and movies far beyond your expectations for a 3in woofers and 99$ speakers... My jaw is literally dropped, the sound is full, not extremely low but enough to make me very surprised to hear low frequencies, efficient, dynamic and very neutral, midrange, high and low are played as they should be. After now two days I still can't believe this big sounds coming from those so small speakers... I'm so surprised...

Did you call Emotiva and get them shipped across the border, I was thinking of a pair for connecting to my Little EGO and the $99 price is nice but after exchange, taxes, border fees and shipping I'm wondering how much the total cost will be, I will have some B-Day money prob so I was thinking of these but by the time it's said and done I'm imaging more around $200 for us Canadian's lol. Chad I bought it directly here in a Canadian retailer in Montreal region www.quebecacoustic.com for the price of 149$can shipping and handling included, I think it is pretty fair 99$us = 130$can.

at lunch my wife asked me if there was a good pair of small blue tooth speakers she could move around. I said yes and ordered them before our meal came. Brownie points when she hears them.

These are a knockout in sound and appearance. I have sold a bunch of Bluetooth speakers and they are not even close to the Airmotiv 3b in sound quality, or build. Unless plastic is a big draw to someone. $200.00 for plastic speakers? Okay for some. Your mileage may vary. I really like the 3b speakers for their complete package. Awesome.

I just took delivery of my new Airmotiv 3b and I'm playing them through bluetooth / Ipad / Pandora. Hey,they sound really good! I'm surprised because of their diminutive size. They won't replace my desktop speakers (really nice sounding Radio Shack AMX-16), but they will go with me on my time share vacations. A good value at $99.00

The highs were missing, the midrange was veiled and muffled and the bass was distorted even at moderate volumes. They could have done so much better. I'm a little disappointed. Just ordered the Fluence Fi50. We'll see how that works out. I was wondering when you ordered the #3 what you would think. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews. It's like people who don't know better or haven't heard the #1 or #2 liked the #3, but for sure people who have the #1 or #2 dislike the #3 a lot. They say it doesn't even come close to the #1 or #2. Perhaps there are either QA issues, or HK changed the innards a bit and cheapened it up. Dunno. I have no need for the #3 anyway since all it has more is the ability to run 2 speakers and Bluetooth 4. The #2 upgrade has the same sound as the #1, but adds a 1/8" input jack (important for me) and Bluetooth 3. Not hearing them, only guessing, I don't think the #1 or #2 are going to have the refinement the 3b has for sure. But I'd also guess that outside on a patio the HK is going to have a broader sound stage and play deeper bass. In other words, outside I'll bet it sounds richer and fuller. It's battery isn't great, but when not playing it full blast (which I wouldn't) it will last quite a while. If I were buying something strictly for inside I'd certainly try the 3b for sure. I'll bet it sounds very nice. But for my current needs (mostly outside) I think the HK Onyx 2 will be better. Here is a video comparing the Onyx 1 to the other highly rated portable, the JBL Extreme ($250). To my ears, the JBL has more bass, but it's higher end bass and it's muddled and droning. There is more blatant mid-range which I dislike. And the treble is most certainly not as clear. Only when this guy plays the crazy electronic music at the end do I think the JBL might be better suited. Both play more bass than I care for when inside, but outside it balances out more. The JBL also appears to be super portable, great for outside or travel, and has a very long battery life. If I were a beach goer that might be the ticket. Decisions decisions. I'll check out the Fluence Fi50.

Bonzo, the Fluence Fi50 does not operate on batteries. It needs to be plugged in since it uses 40W amps. That works fine for my daughter since she can use the outlets we have near our deck. It has two 5" woofers and it is a closed design (no ports). For what it's worth, I'll post a very brief review once I receive them. EDIT: She wanted a single unit so that it is easy to carry from room to room. Also, she's a bass hog so for those reasons the 3B was not a contender. SECOND EDIT: Returned the Fi50 for lack of good bass. Back to the square 1.

I received the Fluence Fi50 and having auditioned it, I have to say this is a good speaker. Highs are good, midrange is fine and bass is well controlled but not that powerful. For a bluetooth portable speaker it is very good. Pairing is simple and really no instructions are required for it or for operating the unit. It also has bass & treble adjustments.
Two gripes: (1) no carry handle but I knew that before ordering and (2) it does not remember the volume setting when switched off and turned back on. It resets it to the mid-volume setting so you would need to walk over to the unit and change that. It does remember the bass/treble settings however - strange! Everything else is hands free once set.
