Hi, was wanting to ask if anyone has purchased the OppoUHD-203 and what they think of it? I am looking to buy it so that I can upgrade to UHD but I'm torn on whether to wait for the Oppo-UHD-205 to be released. I currently watch blu ray movies on my PS3 and wanted to take advantage of better picture. What is your advice? My setup consists of XMC-1, XPA-5 G2, XPA-2 G2, XPA-4 G3, ERC-3. Speakers Klipsch RF-82s, RC-62, RS-52s, RB-81s

I forgot to include my Tv. It's a Samsung UN50HU8550 with the Samsung One Connect Evolution Kit SEK3500 that makes it 4K compliant.

Picture wise the 205 will be identical to the 203, if your holding out for the USB dac/ or analog output stage then it will probably be worth the wait, if neither of those 2 things matter to you then get the 203 now.
There are still a few bugs to iron out but the 203 is a very solid player and Oppo has an excellent track record where support is concerned. 1080p -> 4K upscaling will probably look better done in the Oppo than on your TV. 4K HDR already looks very good, there have been some reports of stuttering whilst playing UHD discs but I've not seen it on my 203.
I'm holding onto my 105 and have already purchased the 203, sometime down the line if the 205D ever comes out I may consolidate and get that one.

I'd probably go ahead on the UDP-203. The 205 has been and always will be for those who are seeking an additional outboard DAC. The XMC's are surely more than up to par if that be the case.

I have the 203. Most impressive video quality. Audio quality also top drawer. There are a few bugs they need to work out. It seems every 4K player had a bunch when they came out, and then there was a series of firmware updates. Oppo has a great track record in that regard.
I'd go for it. UHD discs look great on my LG OLED, and Blu-rays upscaled have never looked better. My $.02.

I forgot to include my Tv. It's a Samsung UN50HU8550 with the Samsung One Connect Evolution Kit SEK3500 that makes it 4K compliant. I have the same setup except my TV is the 60" model. The UN50HU8550 was already 4K compliant without the SEK3500 but the SEK adds HDR compatibility. If you are only concerned about picture quality, get the 203 and save a bunch of money. Only get the 205 if you plan on using it's analog outputs.

Thanks for the quick replies and advice. I will go with the 203 since I don't have a need for analog outputs at this time and I am very happy with the dac on the ERC-3 and the dac on the XMC-1. Music with headphones on the XMC dac sound phenomenal. At this time my primary music listening is with CD's and music streaming thru Spotify via Apple TV g2. In the future I would like to delve into audiophile caliber music via jriver or fubar2000 because if you have garbage in then you get garbage out no matter how good is the dac. I wanted to ask if anyone has compared Darby with the oppo105 vs Blu-ray with the uhd205? I know the technology isn't out yet for Darby UHD but is the 203 superior to the 105D when it comes to regular Blu-ray?

1080p -> 4K upscaling will probably look better done in the Oppo than on your TV. My question to you and everyone else here that believes this to be true, please explain why would the UDP-203 scale non-4K content better than the OP's Samsung flat panel?

I can't tell a difference, LC, I let the TV do any upscaling.

LC, I was asking if the upscaling was better on the new Oppo because I never seen Darby nor do I have anything to compare it. The majority of my tv watching is with DirectTV HDDVR and I am just not happy with the resolution so I am trying to get the best upscaler for my current setup even if requires holding out for the 205. But at this time it looks like the 203 would suffice according to everyone's comments.

I don't let me PJ upscale to 4k so the oppo upscale compared to the k8500 is a big improvement

I have the same TV but in the 65" version, picture is superior! Have you adjusted the picture with any reference disc? I've had mine calibrated and love the detailed picture, especially when viewing 1080 and or 4K material. You should NOT be dissatisfied with the quality of this TV. Something is wrong! Very Wrong! There are a few of us using the 8500 / 8550 / 9000 and have never had any complaints about the video quality of our sets. Im a calibration guy but others say that the Disney Wow disc did a good job.

Thanks, I will look into a calibration disk. Another anomaly with the tv is that when streaming 4K with the Netflix app; the brightness changes all of a sudden during scenes and it gets either bright and then dark like if the tv is trying to find the right setting or something. This is common to many different shows/movies but it is isloated to Netflix. For now as going back to topic has anyone seen a difference from Darby and the UHD upscaler? I am close to pulling the trigger and ordering the 203 since the consent is that video wise the 203 and 205 will be the same and as of now Darby doesn't exist for uhd.

There was a issue with "lightning" with some of their sets that sounds a lot like what he's describing. There was a firmware update that fixed it.
