Some of TVs have a feature where the brightness adjusts automatically based on the ambient light level. Maybe this is causing the issue?

PM me or start another thread if youd like to continue about your TV, i think I could help you. I was looking at the Samsung KS9800 when replacing my TV. There was a issue with "lightning" with some of their sets that sounds a lot like what he's describing. There was a firmware update that fixed it. Yes, true. There could be a few problems but I did Ass/u me that they've been done. Could be that settings are not applied to all inputs or never being set up after getting the tv home. There is much more to buying a tv then bringing it home and just plugging it in. One really needs to get to know there tv

Besides, you'd be surprised how many people don't update their firmware.

Set it and forget it.

Thanks y'all. I am happy to report that I just ordered the Oppo. I am humbled by everyone's help and comments. As for the TV, I am going to get the Munson calibrator and check on the auto brightness feature. The Tv has the lastest firmware because it is connected to the internet via the SEK3500. To be honest, I haven't adjusted any settings since I purchased the SEK but I can tell you that it made a positive improvement in my TV watching. I just have to work off these kinks. More to follow.

Some of TVs have a feature where the brightness adjusts automatically based on the ambient light level. Maybe this is causing the issue? [ Thanks Hemster! I turned off the Smart LED feature on the TV and it fixed the issue of the Tv adjusting the brightness bright and dim during dark scenes while streaming Marco Polo on Netflix Ultra HD 4K. I still need to calibrate the TV but it looks great.

Update: I received my Oppo UHD-203! I am looking forward to installing it. To my amazement the shipping was fast (ordered on the 29th and received on the 1st- caveat I do live in California), the packaging was very well put together (very professional and good presentation), and it included a premium certified HDMI cable that I was not expecting (this is great because I ordered a couple from blue jean and they don't arrived until Wednesday). Thank you for all your comments and posts.

It occurred to me when I was once again looking over the UDP-203 features/owners manual that you can still take advantage of the 7.1 bed of Atmos/DTS:X tracks on a UHD bluray movie even though I don't currently have a 4K flat panel. Also I've been following the owners thread on AVS and apparently a few bugs have found their way in to the UDP-203's firmware. This to me proves that no matter how much beta testing goes on before release, not all bugs can be flushed out until real world usage occurs.

My 203 would not play an SACD nor would it play DSD (.dsf) files. Oppo quickly found the problem to be a certain combination of resolution, frame rate and color depth. I made a quick change to the color depth (4:2:0 to 4:2:2) and everything started working fine. Who would have thought something like a color depth setting would prevent an SACD from playing. It turns out it's an HDMI handshake issue. A firmware fix is forthcoming.

Geebo......I'm planning on buying the 203 in April. Needs to coincide with my birthday. In the meantime, could you provide a review or your thoughts on the 203? Thanks! So far I'm very pleased with it. The music indexing is way better than the 103 so if you have attached storage with music files or a NAS you'll find it much more comprehensive. You can also have several playlists saved as well as a favorites icon on the home screen. Overall considerably faster operation than the 103 and of course, UHD 4K HDR disc playback which will soon include Dolby Vision with a planned firmware update. Very good picture quality but the 103 really wasn't lacking in that area. I haven't tried the analog audio outputs yet though I may do that sometime soon at least for two channel. So far I've had no problems with any bitstreaming or PCM audio streams except for the SACD/.dsf problem that was easy to work around and is also part of a planned firmware fix. Build quality is on par with the 103 which is to say very good. No apps at all if that's important to you. I actually prefer the uncluttered screen and never used any of those that were included on the 103 anyway. Oh yeah, 4K BDs look amazing especially with HDR.

Thanks! We don't really use the apps on the 103 either mainly due to apps on the TV and an Apple TV. We can watch 4k on Netflix with the TV app.
Really look forward to the 203. Time will pass slowly! Not sure if I will sell the 103 or just move it to the bedroom. Will make that decision when the time comes.

What UDP-203 owners here have actually used this player with their non-4K flat panels? Did it work as it was supposed to or is it one of those bugs that's in the beta firmware fix stage?

Well I've finally given in to ordering and I'm now an owner-in-waiting! You will love it. Played a plain old DVD on it and the upscaling was really terrific. Hadn't expected that. A real improvement from other players. There are some glitches but a firmware update is imminent. Enjoy!!! Mel

Mel I still have some DVD's that I like to watch from time to time, so that is a bonus with its upscaling abilitiy. As for the current bugs, I have no doubt that they will all be addressed in a timely matter.
