The V3 HDMI upgrade is said to include "full support for HDR10 and Dynamic HDR," but no mention is made of Dolby Vision. Does anyone know what Emotiva's position is regarding possible Dolby Vision support for the XMC-1? I'm pretty sure HDMI 2.0 can pass the dynamic metadata currently offered in Dolby Vision, though only at a max of 4K resolution with Dolby's workarounds designed for HDMI 2.0. Thus I would assume that a HDMI 2.0b board would similarly also pass Dolby Vision's dynamic metadata.

The V3 HDMI upgrade is said to include "full support for HDR10 and Dynamic HDR," but no mention is made of Dolby Vision. Does anyone know what Emotiva's position is regarding possible Dolby Vision support for the XMC-1? I researched this a bit more since my first response, and below is an excerpt from a Dolby Vision FAQ on the FlatPanelsHD website, as well as the link to the full article. www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?subaction=showfull&id=1472208035--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What version of HDMI does Dolby Vision require? (dynamic vs. static metadata)? During the color grading process in post-production, the Dolby Vision workflow enables the colorist to perform a scene-by-scene analysis of the particular look that they are going for. Once determined, a set a metadata is generated for this scene, then married to the picture and transmitted on a frame-by-frame basis. This is why the type of metadata discussed here is referred to dynamic metadata. This concept is specific to Dolby Vision and adds a layer of performance and fidelity on top of other concepts that only use static metadata. In addition to the scene-based dynamic metadata mentioned above, there are also some static metadata parameters, such as specifications of the mastering display used during the color grading process. This data does not change for the duration of the program and is hence called static metadata. This is data can be carried via the existing HDMI standard. Dolby Vision does not require HDMI 2.0a or 2.1. It embeds the metadata into video signal. Knowing that previous versions of HDMI would not pass the Dolby Vision dynamic metadata, Dolby developed a way to carry this dynamic metadata across HDMI interfaces as far back as v1.4b. The HDMI specification is now catching up with v2.0a supporting static metadata and future versions expected to support dynamic metadata as well. Dolby’s intent is not to compete with HDMI but merely to enable deployment of a full Dolby Vision HDR ecosystem without having to wait for HDMI standardization to catch up. Dolby was and is directly involved in standardization of the current and future versions of HDMI.

This was a quote from Keith before it was confirmed that its hdmi2.0b were getting but it echoes another post that ok's dolby vision passthrough made recently that someone with skills [not me] can find ? As Keith has said theres a lot of misinformation about this metadata out there.

Clearly, all above is correct. In fact, there is a high chance that we'll see HDR-10 and HLG, and maybe Dolby Vision, on good, old fashioned 1080p HD. Yes, it REALLY makes a difference and based on lots of discussion among broadcasters that is something to look for.
However, now we'll have to wait to see what is needed for HDR-10+ from Samsung. Since it is a mash-up of HDR-10 as the underlying EOTF using PQ and dynamic metadata it will at least require HDMI 2.0a and perhaps "b" or even HDMI 2.1` (though that theoretically be needed). If it sounds like a royalty-free version of Dolby Vision, it isn't. Dolby Vision is 12-bit vs. 10-bit and uses SMPTE ST-2094-10 for the dynamic metadata vis ST-2094-40. The HDMI requirement is likely to be caused by the use of the metadata insertion method, as others note above.
Are we having fun yet?

I appreciate all the above information. However, I still wonder why Emotiva does not explicitly mention DOLBY VISION functionality on the XMC-1 enhancements page, or indicate, at least, that it shall be added later via firmware update, as all the other manufacturers do. I shall certainly make sure of that before sending the XMC-1 in for these updates...

OEMs have to eat too so I predict HDMI 2.1 will be required just to gives folks a reason to upgrade even if technically it isn't needed for HDR10+
HDMI has been a good revenue source since its inception.

From the information we have seen so far, Dolby Vision is a proprietary licensed version of dynamic HDR. (The details are somewhat vague; for example, Dolby Vision is claimed to be possible on HD, and even SD, video content... so we're talking about the specific version that goes with 4k UHD video.) As far as we know, special hardware and licenses are required to play and decode Dolby Vision, but are NOT required to simply pass or switch it. Therefore, we believe that being able to switch dynamic HDR will make us able to switch a Dolby Vision video stream. However, until the hardware and firmware is complete, and we test them with actual content, and against actual specifications, we have no way to confirm this. We're also not sure whether there will be special licensing requirements in order to CLAIM to support Dolby Vision (to "use the logo"). (With new standards like HDR10+ being released, there are serious doubts whether licensing Dolby Vision would be worthwhile - and how many other vendors will do so.) Since the details are still in question, all I can say is that we EXPECT the new HDMI (v3) card to be able to switch and pass Dolby Vision content, but that is NOT yet a promise. The V3 HDMI upgrade is said to include "full support for HDR10 and Dynamic HDR," but no mention is made of Dolby Vision. Does anyone know what Emotiva's position is regarding possible Dolby Vision support for the XMC-1?

In case you hadn't heard, the HDMI 2.1 specification HAS been published. It calls for 8k/60 video over a 48 Gbit connection. (Nobody's expecting to see that in real life for a while.) And, no, I couldn't make that stuff up . As an earlier poster inquired, it sure would be nice if Emotiva would start a pre-order process so we can get in line.

I did purchase my XMC-1 last week from Emotiva and it came with HDMI 1.4 board. But the price I paid ($2499) includes the v3 HDMI 2.0b + HDCP 2.2 board upgrade when available. They said that the new HDMI board will be available by the end of July, maybe sooner.

Well looks like v3 HDMI board got delayed, again!!! The new ETA is Q4 2017 as showed on this link: emotiva.com/xmc-1-enhancementsThe Atmos board still shows Late Summer 2017 but either way you will need the v3 HDMI board for the Atmos upgrade to work.
