Unfortunately he always PMs me for advice . I keep telling him to stop all this nonsense, so he can buy my restored, upgraded, modified Sansui G 9000!! Or what I like to call....cleaned, preened, and remachined!! ;D yeah, I can't afford your Sansui, I thought I mentioned that. I won't bother you either for advice; didn't mean to bug you about it, just asking questions.

I did have occasion to use one of the Sony cassette decks a couple weeks back. I was actually enjoying listening to those reels spin back and forth as I did the FF and RW thing from the remote. I listened to some of the tapes I had made from CD's using Dolby C and HX and they sounded pretty good still. Those tapes were from the late 80's I think.
I even listened to some tapes I had recorded from LP's back in the 70's. Again, they still sounded quite good.
I have one cassette that has music on it that I dubbed from a VHS tape...from when VHS didn't have stereo even..like 1977. An actor named Robby Benson used to appear on TV talk shows then and sing some original songs he had co written with his father. Those were some great songs and I used to record them on VHS and dub the monaural sound onto a regular audio cassette.
The TV sound at the time wasn't what it is today, and The VHS sound wasn't Hi fi stereo as came out 10 years later..it was monaural and had some hiss in it. Those songs are still quite good though...some really powerful lyrics. I'd love to find some better recordings of them, but I don't believe Robby Benson ever released a studio recording with his songs. He just performed them live on shows like Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson.

strindl...you have inspired me to go fumble through the old collection of cassettes I recorded back in high school and college. I always recall thinking the old cassette deck (Phillips, I think) recorded very well. It died long ago, but now I have a USP-1 and another cassette deck to use to play the oldies. But I have not for a long time. Set the wayback machine for '77-'86...

I went digging through my collection of o;f 45's last week looking for the very first record I ever bought. I found it too. I scanned a picture of it over in the music forum in the Beatles remastered thread.

It was "Introducing The Beatles" and I paid $2.73 at the very first and at that time only Kohl's Department store on earth. That was several weeks allowance for me so it was a major purchase.

I have a Adcom GFA-555 I use to power a pair of VMPS Larger subs. Doesn't even get warm after hours of use.

My XPA-5 gets a bit warm after a few hours of use but the Adcom never has.

^^^ WOW!! I remember all that stuff..I even owned some of those over the years. I bought a pair of those Koss ESP-9 Electrostatic headphones in 1975 I think. I don't know what ever became of them, but I know I don't have them any longer. Do yours still work?
I also recall that pioneer straight line tracking turntable. I lusted after that. I know after Pioneer bought the Phase Linear brand to try and market some of the higher end stuff under that name, they had the phase linear name on that same turntable.
That Nakamichi power amp brings back memories as well. I recall almost buying that, along with the matching pre amp with that same wedge shaped styling. That must have been mid to late 70's.

As to whether the ESP-9's still work. They did the last time I tried them....it's been a while though. I'm betting that they would still work.

great stuff, but this vintage cassette deck takes the cake and the gold, literally. The Nakamichi 1000zx limited.
