Well, to each his/her own. I don't do HT and I'll be bringing a like-new XPS-1 and an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge to Emofest to sell ($80 and $40 each, respectively) after realizing I have zero interest in playing records. I run my TV audio through the DC-1 analog ins and take the XLR outs to the amps and the RCAs to my two subs, which have their own bass management. In summary, the DC-1 is the RIGHT preamp for me, given its audio quality and ability to well fulfill all my audio needs. In fact, I don't really care if the DC-2 has ANY extra features; I just want to be able to get a replacement if/when my DC-1 fails. Why would you, or anyone for that matter, want to prevent me from doing that?

I want to differentiate myself here and say that I think both the DC-2 and the XDA-3 should exist, as well as the Ego for that matter. They should both (all) serve as different options and perform different functions. No offense cecilg, but you've got a lot of options in the world that are very similar to the DC-1. We don't have nearly as many. And quite frankly, the way you are using it is not the most prevalent. The DC-1 is mostly set up to use as an office unit, or in compact stereo systems. Of course you prove that those aren't the only use, and that's cool, and it's great it's such a flexible unit, but the office / compact stereo is where it's strengths really shine. So you don't do Home Theater, or have a big rack full of many larger components and that's fine. But we do. I want you to have your DC-1, I just also want the XDA-3, as we want it, not a rehash of the DC-1 or XDA-2. And I think the thing that's most frustrating is that it appears the DC-2 is going to come before the XDA-3 (if there is even one coming). Sorry Gary Cook, but I think the DC-1 is not the same as any of the Ego's. For me Egos are either for offices with not as much seriousness to them as owners of a DC-1 (like lack of the volume control), or, mostly, for portability and traveling. I think the 3 options can and should co-exist. All 3 serve different purposes. What I'm pushing for is to get the 3rd one that we want produced, the XDA-3, not the other 2 eliminated just because they aren't something I use or want.

I do have a bunch of gear and do like the DC-1 for its size, it and a Mac Mini combined are a full width together. So I get plenty of benefits and my Mac server on one shelf with a minimum length USB connection. I don't think theres a right or wrong necessarily, just what fit at any particular time period. This hobby ebbs and flows, its never stagnant IMHO

Actually, I think we are all getting off topic are we not? This thread should be about the DC-2, not another completely separate thing we want. Like it or not the DC-2 is coming.
Now if we could just get word the XDA-3 is on its way too we could start our own thread. Perhaps thats what we should do anyway, to help raise awareness there, and not dog this thread. Gary?

Gary, to answer your question:
1. the XDA-2 does not (make that did not) have an analog input, as far as I could see, and I really wanted to run my TV (whose digital outs don't work) through my system;
2. reviews of the sound quality of the DC-1 were excellent, which I was convinced of as soon as I heard it. I have an XDA-1 and the difference was obvious, although the XDA-2 may match the DC-1; and
3. the price was the same, on sale.
Otherwise, let a hundred flowers bloom, within the constraints of Emotiva's budget and market research. To each his/her own.

I think the DC-1 is not the same as any of the Ego's. For me Egos are either for offices with not as much seriousness to them as owners of a DC-1 (like lack of the volume control), or, mostly, for portability and traveling. My BigEgo has a great volume control, a resister ladder controlled by the MacMini, works superbly, unlike digital volume control there is no sound quality degradation at all. I think the 3 options can and should co-exist. All 3 serve different purposes. Sorry, but I remain unconvinced, the DC-1 was designed primarily for the pro environment and it has the features necessary for that environment, including its form factor. People have been using it for purposes for which is wasn't designed and is therefore deficient at. Hence we frequently see threads complaining about it and/or asking for suggested work arounds. I'm not in any way suggesting that the DC-1 is not a good tool, just that it should be used for what it was designed to be used for. At the same time I'm expressing the opinion that the existence of the DC-1 is what stopped the XDA-3 from being designed and sold. The fact that the DC-1 was originally released at the Pro price point and then was subsequently reduced to the ~XDA-2 price point is just further evidence. Maybe I'm just being cynical but I see the DC-2 as being another stall in the timeline of the XDA-3. If, in order to get an XDA-3, the DC-2 has to be delayed then that's not such a bad thing in my view. Cheers Gary

Unfortunately, as per previous post, based on past experiences the 2 (DC-2 and XDA-3) are inextricably related. History tell us that one excludes the other. If Emotiva had announced that the DC-2 and the XDA-3 were under joint development then maybe us XDA-3 proponents could relax, but they haven't, so I'm not. Cheers Gary

Half the price, tiny form factor, amazing sound and super portable Cheers Gary

I just can't take all this too seriously anymore. At 47 I'm too old for worrying about stupid schiit like that.

Call me cynical or what have you, but I never really bought into any of that crap about it being designed for pro use. Wishful thinking marketing ploy if you ask me. But again, that's just me. Probably. See my comments on that below. Totally agree. Although it may not be a stall at all. The XDA-3 could have just never came back to the drawing board. We know from comments from the likes of Dan and KeithL themselves that it was on, then off, then only rumored, with pure silence after that. I agree. It wouldn't surprise me if the DC-1 vastly outsold the XDA-2 and that's the underlying issue here. The problem is, the DC-1 outsold the XDA-2 because everyone, and I mean almost everyone, talked about how the DC-1 sounded so much better. Emotiva trumped themselves. The underlying problem as I see it, IMO of course, and I'm sure I'll catch hell here for my next few sentences, is that Emotiva just bounces around from one thing to the next with no real set rules or goals to their products. For example, as I understand it, the DC-1, XDA-2, XMC-1, and Ego's all use different types of DAC's (only the DC-1 and ERC-3 share the same platform). I could be wrong so please correct me if I am. If I'm correct, then really, a big WTF are customers supposed to decide on to buy? There are 4 different form function things yeah, but they all sound different because they are made different. Perhaps that's totally unavoidable? I dunno. But it would make more sense to me if Emotiva picked one brand of DAC and then based their products around that. I would also think that would save them time and money bringing things to maturity, but what do I know. We are really off topic here. We've discussed this 10 times over already. I think if we want to discuss it further we should start an XDA-3 thread.

Just a different form factor at work here. There are lots of ways to kill a fly. Choose your poison. I recently just bought a Schiit Fulla, which might be considered a poor man's DC-1. No reason one or the other shouldn't exist.

I've been on the fence between the Schiit JOTUNHEIM and waiting for the DC-2. If the DC-1 had a stronger headphone amp and 1/4 inch headphone jacks I'd would have already purchased it. It may seem like minor squabbles but it's important to me.
How's the fulla?

. . . 1. . . . I really wanted to run my TV (whose digital outs don't work) through my system; . . . I thought the digital outs on my TV were broken too but then I found out that TVs are not allowed to strip digital audio from HDMI and send it to the digital outs. Broken by design! What a concept!

I am glad that my 46" Panasonic Plasma will pass 2ch digital. They must not be doing that anymore? Or maybe it is a case by case thing? It is a great feature for a location like a bedroom. I run an XDA-2 and use the RCA out to powered Bang & Olufsen 6000s? and balanced converted to RCA to a sub. The set has 3 HDMI inputs, and I can use cable, Apple TV, and Blu-ray. It is a nice system.

Yes, we want MQA in the DC-1!!!
its a small add on and a licensing fee, just like Dolby or DSD or any other add on. Optional add on for those that wouldn't want it. I have no idea why they wouldn't, nut a modular slot add on would be great.πΆπΆπΆ
Offer it for the RMC-1 as well. π
