Good afternoon gents,
I am in between speakers at the moment and I am considering something in the sub 1000 range, among my considerations are the Tekton Lore Reference speakers, I have seen such a polarized response to these speakers, and I would like to give them a try; my only concern is that some users report harshness in the upper mid range. I am curious as to what your experience has been with this?
To give you a little history my previous three speakers were Martin Logan motion 60xt, DIY Statements, and sonus faber Venere 2.0's. All of which I enjoyed for different reasons.
However, a while back I built some audio nirvana alnico speakers, and really disliked them, they had a level of harness I hope to avoid with the tekton speakers.
Thoughts?

Those Martin Logan's are really nice speakers. I think the Tektons would be a sideways move. The tweeeters at the beginning have a slightly harsh tone. Over hundreds of hours they mellow out. Having said that the Tektons really bring the volume. There is a rocking deal on Tekton Pendragons in this thread especially if you're local. emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/51522/christmas-speaker-clean-out

I am not naive enough to hope that the tektons would be an upgrade to the motion 60xts. I simply enjoy getting the opportunity to try gear from time to time, and I am looking for something different. Its been a while since I have had an ah hah moment with a new pair of speakers.

The big difference in Tekton's Pendragons is that they are big speakers that produce a big soundstage with powerful dynamics. Everything is big with these speakers. They can definitely outpace the ML's in those qualities.

I have the Lore Reference, Lores, and the Enzo's. The mid range and bass punch is where Tekton shines, very good sounding speakers!
I also own Magnepan Mmg's which are very good but delicate so no mid range punch but plenty of mid range presence.

You have a price point and that’s a start, however what you are bothered about means you need to get out there and really listen to many different speakers until you can get closer to the timbre that does it for your ears. The lower frequencies are easier (I believe) to get right once the other is accomplished. The last thing I would do is to put someone else’s ears 👂 in charge of my pocket book. Bill

I don't see how it is possible to recommend speakers online. And without some kind of audition.
I'd say, 'send off for some Magnepan MMG for 600$' But that's just nutty. I like Panels but have no idea how you'd react.
But I know nothing of the space they are going and more importantly WHAT you value in a speaker. And even what you found lacking in previous speakers you've owned.
1000$ a pair is an incredibly competitive space. Even some used speakers might pop up as both good value and 'keepers'. With little to lose if you don't like 'em.
How much amp do you have? For a 50 watt amp, you'll probably desire something on the sensitive side. For a HT receiver? You can't get TOO exotic a load or the darn thing won't drive it properly.
Nope. You need to do some homework (by tht I mean get OUT of the house and go listening) and try to narrow it down some.

I have the Enzo XLs with the upgrade package and couldn't be happier. I have never heard any harshness ever. Now that the have about 100 hours on them the have opened up nicely. I will tell you one thing the are sensitive to toe in so, if you do decide to buy Tektons, take the time to experiment with the positioning.

Sound and solid advice. No way to make recommendations without knowing what you are "hearing" for in a new speaker. It does sound like you have a bit of audio wander-lust and while it's enjoyable to always try new things, it can also stretch the bank. So what do you like about your past speakers? Smooth mids, laid back highs etc? Lots of great opportunities on the used market. Legacy, Paradigm, B&W, Vandersteen... although some may require a bit higher budget. Scott

Yes there is a significant difference, get the Lore as it uses the pendragon 10" driver and it is amazing! My wife confiscated them from me and have them installed in her office no Subwoofer. So I have the M Lores in our bedroom and the Enzo's in my office with the Maggie's in the closet. I would happily trade my wife for hers.

Given the price range you are looking at, I have to recommend the Emotiva T2's. Having heard them at Emofest, I was very impressed. I have not heard those Tekton's, so I cannot compare. But, I can recommend the T2's. Mark

FWIW I have had very mixed results with Audio Nirvana speakers, some sounding quite nice and others distorting and sounding harsh and ragged. The quality control from their plant in Singapore seems lacking.

Scott Audio wander-lust is indeed accurate Scott. I enjoy music just as much as the next man here in the lounge, BUT I am not afraid to say that I enjoy listening to the gear as well. For example, It's fun to be able to enjoy some Martin Logan theos hooked up to some emo monoblocks for a while, then go and switch it up with some tubes and a pair of Klipsch Heresy's. The theos had amazing clarity in the sweet spot, while the Heresy's sounded darn good just about everywhere I sat. Better, worse, or maybe just different. If a pair of legacy speakers ever come up for sale at a good price, you better believe that I will be looking into them haha.
