Thanks in large part to the advice of my on-line buddy Teaman I now have an XPA-5 gen 1. The guy who sold it kept both the shipping box and the cable for the 12v trigger than came in the box, so all I have is the amp and the power cord. It is currently up and running using my Onkyo TX NR717 as a pre/pro. I am using SVS 1m cables to connect the two.
Can someone please advise what cable for the 12v trigger I need so I don't have to manually turn the XPA-5 on and off every single time?

PM me Dave, I'll send you a couple! Tim Thanks Tim! +++ For the rest of the replies: Thank you as well, I am reading your links, I'l go back and re-read my manual again and I'll jump back in after I'm a little better informed. I'll find a pdf manual for the XPA-5 as well, that will surely help. This is my first time using an external amp with an AVR, maybe some of my thinking is wrong. I just want the amp to turn on and off when I turn the AVR on and off and I thought the 12v trigger was the mechanism by which that happened. Is my thinking correct on this?

I am almost positive that receiver doesn't have a 12v trigger for zone 1. The manual says the 12v trigger is ONLY for Zone 2. It was hard to track down and there was only a couple of sentences on it but you are correct. I can't use the AVR to turn the XPA-5 on and off for normal operation in Zone 1.

I just retired my onkyo audyssey xt32 receiver for a XMC-1. I feel your pain. Annoying.

I am almost positive that receiver doesn't have a 12v trigger for zone 1. I know this is dangerous, but I've been thinking. Why couldn't I use the 12v trigger for Zone 2? The Onk 717 is currently running 2.1 in Zone 1 so no Zone 2 speakers. Can I simply tell the AVR I am running Zone 2 so it will send the signal?

That should work. I used to use the triggers from Z2/Z3 on my Integra prepro for other purposes (no speakers on those outs). Just had to add the zone on/off buttons to my Harmony sequences.

It'll turn on the XPA-5 whenever zone 2 is active. If you have speakers connected on the zone 2 output but you don't want to hear them simply turn the volume for zone 2 down to zero. If you forget to turn zone 2 off before powering the AVR down the AVR will still be partially on since it assumes you want the zone 2 playing. And the XPA-5 will still be on. Those smart strips are an excellent option, they are very useful. I have two of them. I use one in the bedroom to turn off all those little LED standby lights when the stereo receiver is off. The other one is sitting ATM.

I bought that exact model from Amazon.
I plugged the Onkyo TX NR717 into the Control Outlet and the XPA-5 into the Switched Outlet. The outlet works perfectly, by turning the Onk OFF it also turns the XPA-5 w/blue light OFF.
When I turn the Onk back ON, it turns on the XPA-5, orange light ON.
I want the blue light to come on automatically when I turn on the Onk. Any suggestions?
I would be happy to read the manual but I don't have one and Emotiva doesn't have a pdf for me to download.

Heres the manual, anytime you need to locate one just typethe name of what your looking for followed by pdf. www.manualslib.com/download/665796/Emotiva-Gen-2-Xpa-5.htmlIm assuming your avr has no trigger out function?

Don’t think the Emotiva amps have an always on mode. If you didn’t get an outlet with the 12v trigger out, you’ll need to add it. Any 12v transformer with 3.5mm jack will do. I think this with adapter T is correct, but only looked briefly from my phone (caveat emptor): www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B079L2ZZ16-tm

I saw that manualslib.com when I did a Google search. It wasn't from Emotiva and I am highly suspicious of sites that offer something for nothing. I don't want to download a virus or a pdf file which has been altered with ad-ware. +++ And you are correct about the AVR trigger out. My Onk 717 has no trigger out for Zone 1 but it does have a trigger out for Zone 2/3. I don't have an active Zone 2 with a speaker load, but maybe I can simply enable Zone 2 via the menu and it will send the signal to the XPA-5. Does the trigger out function on the XPA-5 both wake it up and shut it down? I've accidentally left it running overnight a couple of times and it's not the end of the world but I'd rather not do that.

@wuv80 , sweet looking setup. Ive used that site for many manuals, dont have any problems with it. Emotiva will most likely send it to you gia e-mail if you ask. Customer service is great! The amp will be off with the orange ring on, and yes the trigger will turn the amp on and off. Have fun,
Nick

Agree with novisnick, trigger turns amp on returns it to standby. I use the trigger for the XPA5 and the smart outlet for the subwoofer.

Will such a power strip handle the surge current without restriction? I've had NO luck with power conditioners over the years and now plug amps directly to the wall....a dedicated circuit, at that. Of course, my Parasounds will turn ON when sensing an INPUT signal, so there is a slight built-in time delay, which is all to the good. I wish that the 12v trigger stuff had either fixed or best-case, optional time delay. I LOVE it when a company builds in useless features. Trigger good for Zone#2 ONLY? Another reason for me to continue to skip HT.
