Were you using the BDP-93 to play Hunter Killer? And if so, was the BDP-93 configured for bitstream audio output? Yes and Yes. The XMC-1 showed TrueHD 7.1 (or something like that on the display) The video was unaffected, no skip or pause. There was no pop...just silence for a few seconds. This has been an issue with certain Blu-Rays...some play without any issue and some show this issue.

I used to have a BDP-93 (Well still do, but the transport stopped reading discs). Unless Oppo fixed it with a firmware update (which I doubt, they told me it was hardware related), the 93 will not properly playback an Atmos soundtrack in bitstream mode. I don't remember it manifesting (this was with the original HDMI 1.4 video board) quite the same way you describe, but it did occur, every time I tried to play an Atmos soundtrack in bitstream. It will properly play an Atmos soundtrack if configured for PCM audio output. When I did that, I had no issues.
No guarantee, as this thread demonstrates that every XMC-1 is not the same, but it is worth a try.

No guarantee, as this thread demonstrates that every XMC-1 is not the same, but it is worth a try. "Seemless Branching" is exactly what you are describing. At the time Dolby TrueHD/Atmos required more processing power than what the current chips/processors(at the time) were using. If I remember correctly, the problem was with "buffering" of the Atmos data and caused these audio dropouts with the newer mastering(at the time) of Atmos encoded blu-rays which was called "seemless branching". The jump of a generation from the BDP-93 to the BDP-103 fixed this problem, other manufacturers had this problem as well. The fix for the older blu-ray players that were "supposed" to be backwards compatible was to change the "HDMI AUDIO FORMAT" in the BDP-93/BDP-83/BDP-80 from "BISTREAM" to "LPCM".

Change the setting in the BDP-93 for "HDMI AUDIO FORMAT" from "BITSTREAM" or "AUTO" to "LPCM" while playing these ATMOS encoded discs and hopefully you'll have audio dropout free viewing. My reply to viper6 just above about "SEEMLESS BRANCING" is the reason for these dropouts.

Oh, right. I left the "L" off LPCM. My bad.

Update to post on Page 153 of this thread. Replaced the 3 foot Blue Jeans Cables Belden "F" series HDMI cable with a 6 foot Cablematters Premium HDMI cable as the HDMI out cable on the Oppo 203. The Oppo now recognizes the TCL flat panel as an HDR capable display. The Panasonic, which is also connected with a Cablematters cable, already did.

Is there a negative impact of setting it to LPCM and leaving it there?

It will just show PCM or something like that.

Thanks for all the advice!!
I only use the Oppo for Netflix Blu-Ray movies. Until they start offering 4K discs, it is good enough. Hope this fix works and I can get a bit more life out of it.

This way just has the BDP-93 decoding the audio instead of the XMC-1.

As an aside, eARC will allow bitstream on the connection, but both the source and sink need it have the eARC capability

Who's installed 5.8? Anything fixed? Didn't know about this. Thanks! When I backdated the firmware to the suggested previous version a few strange things began happening, so I hope this will restore the behavior I was previously experiencing.

Who's installed 5.8? Anything fixed? Didn't know about this. Thanks! No real fanfare from Franklin on this release. I only knew because Keith sent me an email regarding a different issue, and he was encouraging me to update. I haven't been in the room to do the update yet, but I'm curious. I'll probably have a chance to run it tonight.

When I loaded it about a week or so ago, it didn't change anything that I noticed as 5.7 was working perfectly for me except the 7.1 pcm problem. I did notice that it has newer Firmware, FP(front panel) and HDMI versions.

Mmm I'm still on firmware 5.4 and have been able to work, with my Harmony Elite, around the quirks of the XMC-1 and now works fine. So the big question is now: Should I fix something that is working..... and upgrade to 5.8???

But if that happens, don't go out of the ship in the pod, you might not get back in. Seriously, if you're not expecting any difference, be happy with what you have.

I ran the update last night. Went off without a hitch, but no discernible changes.
