It is just like trading in your car for the latest model. New car smell! I wouldn't use that analogy. Maybe for the smell, but trading in cars to a dealer is almost always a loosing deal for the owner. I'd say its usually a major A.F. On the contrary, this Emotiva trade in thing sounds pretty cool at first glance. The next big question I haven't seen asked is, what are you going to do with all the trade ins? Clean them up and sell as referbs maybe? Just curious. Yes.

It is great news, but why the original box After a few years that is almost impossible to keep the box. At least you can buy a set from them. This is a common practice especially for warranty service. Good practice to keep the box until the warranty runs out.

I'm game, so when does this program actually kick off? Also how does the two channel capabilities perform compared to the XMC-1 using either the XMC-2 or RMC-1? The XMC-1 has been awesome, so I certainly would not want to back track on any this feature.
Sorry I've been a bit out of the loop on gear upgrades these days and have lost track of whats going on.

Regarding boxes: I have always kept them regardless. Its almost as if the cardboard box is worth more than the original item that came in it. Obviously this doesn't hold true for the vast majority of consumer items but when it comes to audio you should never toss away the boxes. Try selling used gear on Audiogon without the original boxes… you won't get very far in most cases.

It appears to only apply to XMC's still under warranty, if I read it correctly. I'm curious - are there any XMC's that are now outside the warranty period? Or if people hold off and their warranty expires, are they not eligible? My read is that, for XMC-1’s purchased used, as long as the warranty was transferred then it’s eligible for trade in. Not that it has to be still in warranty at the time of trade in. Cheers Gary Please note the following important details: 1) To be eligible for this upgrade, you must be the current owner of a working XMC-1, with a valid warranty registered in your name. That includes anyone who has purchased their XMC-1 directly from us, anyone who has purchased their XMC-1 from one of our authorized dealers or distributors, and anyone who purchased their XMC-1 used, from a legitimate owner, and has had the warranty transferred to their name.* That's what kinda sucks about this offer to the early adopters............First, EMO promised to their original purchasers that they were getting an upgrade path with the original XMC-1 platform was rolled out. The V.3 4K board has been terribly late and has been buggy since its release. Many XMC=1 owners have held back on the board purchases because of that (me included). Next, they promised to their original purchasers that they were getting the Atmos/ DTS codecs upgrade using the original XMC-1 platform. EMO found out that the task was too daunting with the platform and scrapped the plan. Now, they're trying to make good on the promise with this upgrade offer. I must admit that the offer Dan made at AXPONA sounded pretty nice on the surface. The upgrade path to the 16-ch. XMC-2 was supposed to represent that promise is being kept with a little extra tossed in to promote brand loyalty. But Wait! Now, the details of the upgrade offer are rolled and it looks like the folks who took the original risk and bought an early gen. unit directly from EMO may be SOL. The XMC-2/ RMC-1L processors haven't even gone out to the beta testers yet as far as we know and the 5K RMC-1 is still having it's share of issues that their engineers have yet solve. Who wouldn't wait to see how this all shakes out with the RMC-1's stability before upgrading again. Now that the offer is officially on the table for an upgrade path to the XMC-2, there is still a lot of unfinished business here. Dirac is also not available for any of the latest gen. processors and who knows if it will be available when the XMC-2 comes up for the upgrade roll-out. If your warranty happens to expire before you can get what you were promised in the first place? OH WELL................. Is that how this was really intended?EMO needs to clarify the warranty provision of this offer as it pertains to those early adopters. On the surface, it definitely looks like the person who came along later and bought a used, later gen. XMC-1 on the open market makes out well here. IMO, all the original purchasers of the XMC-1 should get priority. They could be get put onto some kind of commitment list and get first crack at the units as they roll out before they are offered on to the secondary market purchasers and general public.

I want to confirm what others were asking about. It says it applies only to XMC-1's that are "under warranty". I was an early purchaser (and bought directly from Emotiva), and my warranty runs out in about 1 year. So...am I right to assume that the offer expires when my current XMC-1's warranty runs out? Same here. 355 days left. My warranty also runs out in about a year, having purchased just before the May 1, 2015 price increase. However, I think true “early adopters” purchased in July and August of 2014, and only have a few months of warranty left. If Gary Cook’s reading is correct, which seems possible, the owner just needs a warranty in their name, even if the 5 year period has elapsed. We’ll have to wait for a clarification to know for sure. Here’s the actual language 1) To be eligible for this upgrade, you must be the current owner of a working XMC-1, with a valid warranty registered in your name. That includes anyone who has purchased their XMC-1 directly from us, anyone who has purchased their XMC-1 from one of our authorized dealers or distributors, and anyone who purchased their XMC-1 used, from a legitimate owner, and has had the warranty transferred to their name.*

I’m 99.9% sure the meaning is that the XMC-1 has the be registered in your name. They are just trying to avoid someone buying a used one for super cheap (garage sale type of deal) and trading it in for the XMC-2. I would be shocked if Emotiva would make the kind of offer they are making, then just screw over early adopters of the XMC-1.

Super cheap garage sale type deal? Where are these? I’d like one or two for friends and family, shoot, get me one too if it’s a big enough garage! 😋😏

IE if you bought a used on here on the forum with the understanding that you could upgrade it then they want you to have the ability to upgrade. I think they are just wanting to make sure people are not just going out looking for super cheap XMC-1s just to trade them in.

I don't have reason or time to do the math, but somewhere the trade in vs selling outright line has to cross. Especially since the V3 board has ramifications. Anyone figure that out yet?
I still say at first glance this looks like a nice deal for many folks, if and when the XMC-2 is as stable as the XMC-1. By all accounts, if it's based on the same guts as the RMC-1, there is some time to go on that front yet.

If the person who is buying it has no discount (UFL or 40% off card) then the breakeven for a sale on a full V3 XMC-1 would be $2349. If you bought a used XMC-1 (w/V3 card) any cheaper than that and traded it in on the XMC-2 any dollar under $2349 would be a savings. Of course you have to think about the effort involved and the big kicker is you would have to make sure the person you are buying it from has the warranty in their name and they will transfer the warranty to you.

I noticed nobody ask when this deals start. And is this a typo all channels balanced instead fronts ,center and subwoofer? Mel Actually a few of us asked for a start date, no reply so far. I think you’re referring to this language? “ a full sixteen channels of balanced audio output for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X, and Dirac room correction.” This does not mean that all 16 channels are fully balanced, only that they all have balanced outputs (like the XMC-1), I believe the point they are trying to make is that instead of the 7.2.4 (13 channels) of the proposed Atmos board — with the 4 Atmos channels being unbalanced, the XMC-2 increases the channel count to 16 AND they are all balanced outputs. Hopefully this makes sense. Edit: davidl81 beat me to it ...

The FACT is, the XMC-2 is more AND less than the XMC-1. Only the individual can decide if that is important to them or not. But the fact is real. Anything else is sales B.S.
This swap out does have some major appeal if your situation is right.
