A PAIR of these draw less than 1 watt just sitting....Leave 'em on if the auto on is disturbing. 1 watt? I'll bet its not even THAT. You will never see it on your electric bill and in winter you'll never see the extra heat kicked out as a reduction! You seem to have changed your tune. Actually they idle at 5.6 Watts, so 2 of them about 11W, I have 6 of them so 33W. When is it ok for me to care? specs don't call out the on/ no signal number, just the power needed to 'sense' or maybe call it 'housekeeping'. I think I'm consistent. While I'm not PERSONALLY a fan of 'D', having owned a pair of ASP amps for several years, I DO recognize the power saving aspects of the topology coupled with a SMPS. I'm ALSO not a fan of Switchers, regulated or not. For several reasons which I'll omit from this post. I wouldn't worry ever, unless you were in California where Electric Bills are huge. I'd have to look up numbers, but last month I used about 250KwH for the month. Not much by the rest of the countries standards but my bill is near 100$, even with discount....That includes GAS. A 'D' amp with Linear PS might be a slightly different deal. HYPEX used to sell linear PS components, but it's really not hard to DIY, even using 'cookbook' techniques.

My Kill-A-Watt meter informs me that each of my PA-1 amplifiers uses 6 watts at idle with no signal.

I have my four PA-1's powering my front & rear height channels, and they turn-on mainly during the scenes where the Dolby Atmos/DTS:X tracks are most dynamic. They also immediately come on when I'm playing a CD and using the Dolby Surround Upmixer. Interesting that you two find the sensitivity too low. I’m also now using them for heights, when I first tried them a couple years ago and they didn’t come on, I bought the triggered outlet. It’s possible they might work now, but at this point I like that they just trigger on and off with the rest of the system. I’d trade the auto feature for some trigger inputs though, or maybe a user adjustable sensitivity control. I'm with you on the trigger inputs, but so far the "Auto On" feature has worked for me.

I've been looking at these PA-1's and would appreciate input from Lounge members.
Right now I am using Crown XLS-1500 class D amps for HT, connected to my XMC-1. They work fine and I've never had any problems with them. Sound-wise, they seem fine as well for HT but fall short when compared to my VTA-120/SP-14 combo for music. I've no plans for replacing the tube preamp/amp because I'm really happy with those.
The only negative about the Crown amps is the faint hiss I can hear through both the tweeter and woofer (different frequencies, obviously). With my ear a foot away it isn't audible. That hiss is inherent in the amps because it is the same whether the XMC-1 is on or not, and it's not dependent on turning up the volume. The hiss doesn't interfere with the sound when playing a movie or TV show and it sounds fine.
So my question is whether switching these out for PA-1's? There is one Crown amp in bridged mono mode for the L,C and R speakers, and one amp in stereo mode for the two rear speakers. If replaced, it would be with three PA-1's across the front and maybe a BAS-X A-150 for the rears.
Any thoughts?

But if I recall that for the most part you don't notice much difference in amps. So because of that, I would advice you to save your money and stick with what works.

I can definitely tell the diff between the tubes I use for music versus the Crowns, but not so much between SS amps. I probably wouldn't hear much if any difference getting the PA-1's, especially with it being for movies and TV, but I was thinking it might be nice just to get something different. Must be getting restless with all this lockdown stuff going on.

I am considering ordering a couple of these but I notice there is no way to choose a face plate color, are they still available in all black or only black with aluminum border?

Also: 1) How do we know if they are any better than the PA-1's? 2) They don't have balanced inputs to match my XMC-2. 3) If I want three HQ channels to drive my LCR then this doesn't suit.

Was simply providing a potential option. Both are ICE based amps, so it would probably be safe to assume similar performance. If you purchase 2 XTZ amps, you can use the second in "mono" mode to biamp the center. If XLRs are needed, then the XTZ isn't for you.

I don’t understand what you mean by “all black”? Yes, as I said, they have always been “all black” and that’s your only choice, there are no sliver options.
