Lets use this thread to post updates and encouragement for each other! I put the cookies down and am trying to loose weight and eat healthier! Exercise will definitely help but issues make that difficult, but I’ll try!
I’m down 10 lbs in the last few weeks, haven’t really been watching the scale but I was pleasantly surprised when I finally looked at it! It said Zero! LOL, then I stepped on to it! 😲

I think very important factors are consistency and persistence. I hear of lots of people who have gone on diet binges and lost a lot of weight but then they don't stick to it and just gain it back. And we all know about how health clubs really make their money - by people who buy expensive prepaid memberships with good intentions but just go a few times and then disappear.
Eating healthy and exercising regularly, all done sensibly, are invaluable. Also realize it takes time; patience is a virtue. So may the force be with you!

Even retired, having an active lifestyle and skiing almost every winter day, I gain weight in the winter. Food discounts and generous bartenders do me in (and I do like my beer 🍺), but I’m also down 10 pounds since ski season ended, so congrats to you Nick! I always feel better when my weight is under control and my clothes fit more loosely — and I know it’s healthier! Keep it up novisnick!

In January my wife convinced me to start going to the gym. I go three days a week and have a personal trainer. My golf drives go 20 yards farther and my cholesterol went from 214 to 165. I thank my wife regularly for getting me off my butt and into an exercise program!

Here's an interesting video.
I took his advice and stopped drinking my sugar. Yes, I'm feeling better and more energetic.

I really gained after my knee surgery last year. I hit an all time record high of 260. Then as I was about to start excercising again I tore my labrum in my right shoulder. I'm down to 240 after 3 months back at karate. Just saw my doctor and he threatened me. Cholesterol was borderline high and sugar was 100.
The challenge is to drop 15 more lbs before my November Appointment so my target is 225. If I don't its likely that I need to go on daily meds.
I grabbed an amazon fire tv and a six month subscription to Beach Body on Demand. Now I just need to find a program to do at home, while still doing martial arts 3 nights a week.
Maybe each of us could post what workout they did that day?
Mine today was dinner out with my wife and peanut butter mousse for desert... guess I need to workout tomorrow.

I love outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking etc) and at about 53 i noticed a significant loss of stamina, so I started working out. I hate the gym but love the results. I'm in better shape than most 20 year olds. So I'll continue so I can enjoy what I enjoy.

What ever you decide to do diet or exercise or both, make sure you set reasonable goals so you won't give up after being disappointed. You better off losing only 1 0r 2 lbs. a week than to crash diet and just gain it all back. You will be surprised at how little changes can make a difference. I keep my exercise on a calendar and when I skip too many days looking at the calendar makes me fell guilty and accountable. Little things like that. Good Luck to all and your goals.

I call it “couch potato training”!
I mean, if you’re enjoying your magnificent Home Theater system, you will be sitting on your ass a lot reaping the benefits. To that end, I train at Planet Fitness every other day. Between that, work and yard work....I earn my ass time with the AV gear!

Last time I had an urge to loose weight I lost 1/4 of it. Folks started asking the Mrs if I was sick! First time in my life that somebody called me skinny! That was twenty years ago. I’ve always been husky at minimum. Lost 50 lbs in a years time but I had to shut my mouth at 6 PM, should ! I should probably do that anyway. 😳

Truth is I do Yoga, usually 3 times a week. I have skipped it a bunch the last few weeks, but that's because I've stupidly decided to rip up my deck and re-do it. As for weight, only my doctor has ever said my BMI was too high, and I took care of that last year, by hitting target weight. That would be good if I could keep it all off, I'm so close, if I was just an inch taller I'd be fine.

That would be good if I could keep it all off, I'm so close, if I was just an inch taller I'd be fine. BMI is (almost) totally bogus. Body composition is what counts, meaning the ratio between fat and active mass. I am 5'9" and 184 lbs, but I have been lifting weights since my senior year in high school. Although I could for sure do without 5-10 lbs to be really ripped, I am not fat or obese by any stretch of imagination. And yet, if I had to go by the BMI... Since metabolism tends to slow down with age, the best angle of attack is to get more consistently active AND develop healthy eating habits. Notice I didn't write "diet". Going on a diet can help in "resetting" your overall weight to a lower level, but it is not sustainable in the long run. That is why usually the more restrictive the diet is and the faster you lose weight, the easier you take it back when you stop. Not to mention that with an extreme diet you lose muscle mass too. Slow and steady with permanent changes in eating habits that you can (literally) live with is the name of the game. Just drastically reducing the amount of sugar in all forms and changing the ratio between protein, fat and carbs combined with a consistent increase in activity will almost immediately show results in the form of 1-2 lbs weight loss per week. And do not kill yourself with steady state aerobic. Interval training and/or working out with weights is way better in not only burning calories when exercising, but keeping the metabolic furnace well stocked 24/7 and of course developing more muscle mass you will burn more calories just breathing.

My understanding is that RFM (Relative Fat Mass) is actually more accurate in estimating body fat (a DEXA Scan being the most accurate). The formula for RFM, for men, is: 64 – (20 x height/waist circumference). You use the same scale as for BMI. On that scale I come in at a nice 23.7

Do they give you the fat mass number with any scan, or do you have to ask in advance of the test?

Good health can be very fickle and a real *bleep* when not taken care of.😊

I am a big fat guy, well, less fat than I used to be. I have been working keto for a while and lost 45, more to go. The thing that has helped me the most is the bulletproof coffee. I am sipping it right now, the recipe I use is coffee, two spoons of medium chain triglyceride oil, sweetener, a spoon of cacao, a tiny bit of salt, and two big gulps of cream. It works as a meal replacement basically, and starts my liver processing fat for fuel. There are guys who are quite technical about it on YouTube.
Key is that it works. Oh, and I am motivated, my wonderful wife is struggling and I am needed to carry on for the family. So I need to be more lean and agile.
Funny thing is how decent my health is. I was at the doctor and the nurse wrote down my three meds for BP and she said "This will be the shortest medication list I see all day." I told her that was due to decades of clean living and years of good choices. We both had a good laugh that morning!

The biggest fail for me diet wise is boredom and deprivation. So I am mixing it up. Interesting recipes, exercise, and cranking the dial to 11! Down 14 pounds since last weigh in. Getting encouragement from friends and family. I am encouraging others away from fat and excuses. Both are not your friends. Complacency is a killer. My Dad is 83 years old. He swam and exercised like the awesome athlete he was. Many important people in his life said my Dad swam like Johnny Weismuller of Tarzan fame. A fish would drown compared to my Dad.
My Dad has been sedentary for many years of his life though and it took its toll, but now he is very lean. He is a diabetic and has Parkinson's disease. The tremors are so debilitating. I encourage my Dad to keep on trucking and never give up. God has blessed him and come into his life immediately after my Mother had passed away in 1994.
Sometimes we are destined to repeat history because we don't learn. Me, it is not a fad. It is my life ahead. Today is the beginning of the rest of your life! Corny as sh!t, but it is true.
So many people I am close too are changing my life. A friend learning to be a pilot, and exercise maven, a Special Forces guy who is a powerful rail, and many more.
Who you are around with determines your health too. Encouragement, your own drive. Your own goals. I had to ask what do I want in my life. My health was the only answer. And for me the only answer. It starts and ends with me!
