Schools just closed out here for two weeks as a precaution (Suffolk County, NY). Trying to rein in a 17 year old is not easy. The problem is that he is on infliximab, which is somewhat of an immunosuppressant, and a group of his friends will want him to get together with them. Our schools (Ontario, Canada) just closed for the next three weeks. But I doubt they will go back to school until September. Kids usually don't get very sick with this virus so we don't worry, but they spread it everywhere. /b

...I've needed real compassion for Cancer, heart disease, kidney & liver disease, brain trauma and paralyzes in my life; the flu isn't on that list, Dude. I'll tell you what compassion is Dude. Watch your wife go through a year of Breast Cancer treatment, your father slowly die from cancer as you watch him take his last breath, a mother with Alzheimer as her brain rots, 2 of your closest friends murdered, another killed by an illegal in a car wreck, HS friends die in war, siblings fighting cancer, heart, kidney, liver disease then die, cousin paralyzed, another with amputations, a friend with Traumatic brain injury that doesn't know her husband & kids. Have you ever modified a house for wheelchain access? Dude, I hope you never see the day when your sister loses both her sons and you have to call her on their birthday & death anniversaries to make sure she's ok. So Dude, tell me about the ravages of the flu. kma You're entirely right, @texzick. But remember that each and every one of us have our own crosses to bear. Regardless of how carefree other folks' lives may look or sound, everyone has heartaches, whether you see and hear them or not. Nobody who isn't very young has gone through life without losing loved ones. The thing that makes life so precious is that it just isn't infinite. I could give you my own litany, but I think my point has been made. And since the COVID-19 currently going around is fatal to many, yeah - compassion is called for here too - It isn't "just the flu." That said, your row seems harder to hoe than many. I can only offer my sympathy, which, with a buck, will buy you a McCoffee. But it is honestly offered. Best of wishes for you & yours. Boom

Ohio bars and restaurants just ordered closed, except for carryout...adding to schools being closed for a minimum of 3 weeks and limits of gatherings >100 people.
In the coming weeks, we'll see how Ohio rate of disease spread compares to states who have not taken such drastic action.

FYI, COVID-19 is not a flu, it is a viral pneumonia. This is why it is more dangerous to older folks, especially those with underlying lung conditions. But it is not a flu, which is much more easily spread person to person. You have to actually touch or be coughed on by an infected person - being int he same proximity won't do it. It's not air-borne like a flu can be.
People hoarding toilet paper and food because they might be ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days are only making Procter and Gamble rich. And hoarding water? WTF people, will the virus make your pipes stop working?
Chill. Be safe. Wash your damn hands. Practice social distancing. And most of all chill.

People hoarding toilet paper and food because they might be ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days are only making Procter and Gamble rich. As one who knows P&G quite well...here's the facts: 1) P&G plants are working like crazy to meet the demand. 2) The rapid increase in shipments requires extra trucking and all sorts of extras - all of which come at a premium cost (a gross margin hit). 3) While sales will increase (at reduced margins as noted in #2) for now, sales will drop once the supply catches up with demand. This is because the "pantry stocking" effect will be over and at some point in the near future...demand will drop because pantries are over-full. 4) Because of #4, annual sales will net out not much different than they would have been. 5) Because of #2, annual profits will not be as good as they could have been. Net...it really doesn't help companies like P&G. It actually hurts them. Meanwhile, my friends in the plants are working their tails off to fill shelves. I'm keeping their safety in my thoughts. I have many good friends in our plants where Charmin is made. They are good, honest, hard working people. And, they'd give all of us the TP in their pantry if they were near you. Mark

Thanks for that dose of reality, Mark. I was being a bit tongue in cheek, but I also know people in the retail biz around here who say this panic buy has put their quarter into the black.

I also want to add...my Dad died 6 weeks after my wedding because he was HIV+ and was exposed to a minor bug that would have given most of us a mild sickness like a cold. He died in 3 days.
I don't share that to gain any sympathy. The reality is that my Dad ignored advice for preventing spread of HIV that was well known at the time. He got infected, and he died as a result of his decision.
For that reason, I heed the advice of the WHO, CDC, and other scientific organizations who research infectious diseases. I don't panic, but I exercise caution and abide by measures to prevent and flatten the "bell curve" of infectious disease spread.
For my Dad, that meant he never got to meet my children, and they never got to meet him. That was a loss for them and for him. And, I lost having the chance to spend more time with my best friend - the man who was my best man at my wedding...because, well, he was just that. All that loss could have been prevented by a dirt-cheap condom.
Again - no sympathy asked or desired. It's just life. Life is about decisions and choices. Choose well.

I bought more Shiner and put a brisket on the smoker and plan to live life like I always have. Before you know it, this will no longer be a story being used to cover up whatever it is that we are not paying attention to...

The worst part of this besides life disruption is the hoarding. No one needs a years worth of TP. People need to use their brains.

The worst part of this besides life disruption is the hoarding. No one needs a years worth of TP. People need to use their brains. We just got home from the grocery store and it was out of TP!!! Meh, stopped by Costco's auto section on the way home. Here's my solution as I've changed and washed old school cloth diapers before. Costco has a whole bunch of towels for keeping ya baby clean. Likewise, I saw the auto store shelves packed with various plush towels. I did pick up a few gallons of laundry detergent while I was at the grocery store. Would hate to run out when relying on towels for personal needs.

My family is from CORONA QUEENS (Near the 64 Worlds Fair grounds)...…...you can imagine just how happy THEY ARE about the name Bill Hilarious! Ya know the "right" has their end time religious fanatics and the "left" has their end time climate fanatics. Sometimes I don't know which are worst. Just wondering where the Genophobics should be classified? I spend a great deal of time studying various schools of thought and I often for fun attempt to "classify" someone's theological thinking into various schools. Having said that my end time theology is more or less "panmillennial", that is, everything will pan out in the end. j/king. Of course I'm not going to ignore basic or common sense measures to prevent illness etc., just stating that the current hysteria I'm observing is foreign to me because "death has lost its sting". Don't know if anyone has had an opportunity to read the link I previously posted above. There's a lot to learn from previous pandemics. And there's a lot of wonder when considering creation, that is the natural world and the defense systems already in place. History is to be learned from. Rejecting history results in repeating the same mistakes. And often we find people parroting and promoting past mistakes because they refuse to learn from history. Who would ever think that a virus worst enemy may just be fresh air and natural sunlight [UV]? To note, UV sterilizers aren't something that is unfamiliar to me. I used one in a 120 gallon salt water tank and within a day all the unwanted algae and bacteria perished. Likewise, it isn't uncommon for people to use UV lights to prolong the life of fruit as it cuts down on bacteria. I realize bacteria etc isn't the same thing as the Coronavirus, but remember a lot of deaths associated with the Coronavirus are actually from other issues such as pneumonia contracted in the hospitals etc. I also just read that out of 700+ cases of the Coronavirus in NY a third person has died which was 79 yrs old and with multiple "other" health issues. Anyhoot, just recommending this read: Coronavirus and the Sun: a Lesson from the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

Richard Hobday is a quack promoting pseudoscience. That link contains complete hogwash. Just curious, can you elaborate more? For example, can you define pseudoscience and elaborate about which parts of the article are indeed pseudoscience? Likewise, I think it be helpful to define hogwash and provide the standardbearer or source of who or what determines something as hogwash? For example, when I read the article I deemed most "common sense". I mean, I've had some relatives go into the hospital for various illness and then contract pneumonia from within the hospital. I see some of the Coronavirus deaths are not caused by the Coronavirus but complications with other illness. For example, not long ago my aunt went into the hospital to be treated for an unrelated illness but ended up dying of pneumonia which she contracted while in the hospital. I realize "common sense" really doesn't exists. In order for such to exists communication must establish a "common" ground or sense or whatever for two parties to have any foundation by which they may agree. Being a little more specific might help someone as dumb me The article provides several references. Are these pseudo-scientific hogwash?
