Newbie here. I was just wondering…699 replies ( not counting this one) in 3 months and none of them tell us any more about the release of the UMC-1 than Emotiva’s own statements. Maybe I am missing something but perhaps instead of bemoaning the fact that the product is delayed, we should just wait for Emotiva’s next update. Emotiva has stood tall telling us far more than any other company would about their product releases. I don’t know about you but I am going to watch some football…

Damned if you do..... Damned if you don't............ Quite the conundrum! Denon, Klipsch, Magnepan, Toshiba, Panasonic, Oppo, Polk, and SVS never invited me to a party they were hosting for customers. The marketplace is big. The Emo niche is comfy. I'm good. ;D I understand your point, fact is Klipsch has an event just about every year and invites all to attend.I agree,it is very nice of Emotiva to throw a bash for it's following.

It will be interesting to see who comes to market first the UMC-1 or Outlaw's 997 ... it seems that the 997 is the UMC's biggest competitor even though the 997 is twice the price. First one to ship in significant quantity will have a definite advantage with all the pent-up demand. Those who post on the respective forums seem to be fairly brand loyal to either Emotiva or Outlaw, but I'm guessing that there are a lot of lurkers out there who are not so brand loyal to either. Sure, delays will cost Emotiva some sales to the latest, greatest receivers, but the UMC is not a receiver and people buy a pre-pro because they want a pre-pro not a receiver. My guess is that out of those that do give up and buy a receiver a significant percentage will sell their receiver and buy a UMC-1/997 once they become available. Other than getting to market before the 997 I would think the next most important thing would be getting the UMC-1 to market in time for the holiday season as I can see the UMC under a lot of Christmas trees ... ok, who am I kidding the box will be under the tree, but the actual unit will be in the audio rack pumping out tunes within 15 minutes of the delivery driver knocking on the door. ;D Just for the heck of it I'll make my prediction that the UMC-1 will ship in quantity during the month of November. Of course I could be wrong about everything.

Just like HD-DVD and Blu-Ray? ;D Sorry, couldn't resist. Haha, sure thing ... obviously though that is apples and oranges ... HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were competing standards not competing brands using the same standards ... no way both were ever going to survive. I'm no expert but it seems Sony's $$$ and clout with the film studios (including their own) won that war and having a bunch of PS3's out there didn't hurt either. I think the UMC-1 and 997 will co-exist and provide healthy competition for each other just like Ford and Chevy (perhaps a bad example these days). That said, I should have said the first one to market will initially have a definite advantage. Once they're both out potential customers won't care which one came out first ... in fact, there is often a perception (whether it's true or not) that the latest released product offers the most cutting edge features and performance. Over the product cycles hopefully the superior product will be rewarded. (Now you're going to say just like VHS and Beta, right?) ;D

I don't see the future 997 to be in the same league as the XMC-1 as well. As well as the feature set being more substantial, the price of the XMC-1 will be at least $200 less.

The Sherbourne PT-7020 (which looks like the bigger sister to the UMC - for those who missed previous discussions) had a release date of early September. I see that date has now been updated on their website to November.
So I guess November would be the earliest we'd see the UMC - which goes along with Dan saying a couple of shipments before year end.
PS - And for the career whiners take that to mean 11:59PM, November 30

IMHO, as to who will have the initial advantage... I think it's not just about getting to market first. I believe it'll be about quality. Whichever unit has better initial quality (read: fewer bugs) will have the advantage because other than price, quality of performance is what pleases or p1sses off customers.
I also think the XMC is a better comparison with the 997, although the XMC is likely to be more value priced.
I for one am very glad that Emotiva is taking their time to "get it right". Of course I'd rather have the unit in my theater already but I'm willing to wait for the right product.

Even the XMC and the 997 aren't really "apples to apples" comparisons. I'd say they are both aimed at a similar price point, but they have very different feature sets. The XMC will be for those needing "advanced" video capabilities (i.e. multiple displays, HD video to second zone), while the 997's only real claim to fame will be the Trinnov processing. Only time will tell how great that feature will be, but for those with "difficult" room layouts, it could be a determining factor (assuming it works as advertised).
I think both Emotiva and Outlaw/Sherwood are trying hard to put out solid products - Sherwood is going on 3 years of development with the 972 (which the 997 is based on), so one would hope they have things pretty well nailed down. You know Outlaw is going to hold off on releasing the 997 until the known bugs of the 972 are resolved, and that will most likely mean their processor will be delayed into next year.

If the 997 is released and appears to be a good product, the only thing that will hav me waiting for the UMC-1 will be Emotiva declaring a 100% assured ship date.
As for the pricing difference, I'm not sure how many units of th eUMC-1 they plan on selling at $699. Will they make this an "intro price?" Will it be $799 or $899 soon?

Emotiva has made it very clear that they are going to honor the $699 price - it's not an "introductory special", that's the real price.

After all that Emotiva has been through if they can sell the umc for $699 and make a buck, they're an even better company than I thought. The promise of an additional discount for past and future buyers is beyond any known(to me)bargain in audio. If this unit meets realistic expectations $799 would be a great bargain.

There is no plan to raise the price of the UMC-1. $699. No, we don't make a ton on that...do the math. We'd rather sell more at a lower price than a handful at a higher price...without an elitist attitude.

As the Scotsman said when asked if he would like anything in his single malt "Aye, I'll take a little more"
