So, a little while back I gave up on Emotiva, and the promised firmware. I purchased my RMC-1 many years back and we’ve had too many broken promises on functions & features that steered many of us to that processor.. And before someone chimes in with how good it sounds, I am a big analog two channel guy and it does. But that is like saying my car drives fast, and hopefully soon I’ll have steering and antilock brakes like they promised. Saving my pennies for another processor. What I can’t help thinking is will those who upgrade be on the next Emotiva forum waiting for them to fulfill and likely deliver short on the promises made for group of devices. No trust or faith in the company sorry to say Hopping for everyone I am wrong Gerard. That was very accurately and succinctly stated. You echo the sentiment of so many here. All of us who bought into the RMC-1 / RMC-1L / XMC-2 are still waiting for the promised availability of firmware and/or hardware upgrades that will make their purchase fully justified, fully compliant with the advertising of the product that still exists online. And, as I have said before, Emotiva has engendered in us a level of loyalty one doesn't usually offer to a brand of electronics. It feels like a betrayal that the solution to our unified complaints will be remedied at our cost in the release of new equipment, rather than to meet the expectations of the equipment already purchased. The v2.5 firmware was released on January 18 of this year, just a two days after the release of v2.3. Since then, I have checked for a promised firmware update twice a week. The promise of the elusive v3.0 has been dangled in front of me like a juicy carrot. Now that carrot is a desiccated stick of broken promises. Nine months of waiting. Ironic in that it takes that long to create a whole new human, but apparently not enough time for a firmware update for a glitchy processor. So I find myself looking at other companies. Marantz has a new processor. So does McIntosh. There are increasingly more options. Yet, for some reason, I still feel that I should, maybe give, perhaps, with some reservation, Emotiva one last chance for redemption. Though like the carrot, that is withering as every day passes. Good grief. Dirac changed the game early on. Blame them first. The RMC was built to use Dirac as Emotiva's agreement with Dirac intended. That didn't happen, and everything changed. FWv2.3 was released june 16, 2021. FWv2.5 was released january 18,2022. The releases were NOT 2 days apart. emotivalounge.proboards.com/board/209/rmc-1-1l-xmc-firmwareA huge number of things have changed in the last 5 years. Emotiva is rolling with the changes at far less cost than your 'options' from Marantz or McIntosh. But, options abound. Go for them. 'One last chance for redemption'... Gestation periods and desiccated carrot sticks... - LMBO... I expect they will 'redeem' themselves with current technology, at a price more people are willing to pay than the 7K for the Marantz, or the 16K or more it will cost for the McIntosh. I want things too, but the hyperbole and dramatics here are way over the top.

Though I think you are downplaying the overwhelming sense of collective disappointment in this forum. I am part of that collective disappointment. Perhaps you haven't read enough of my critical posts. The latest glitches I experienced, in the last 2 days, was twice trying to play another blu-Ray disc, one 4K movie and the other a music disc, and getting no sound at all. I tried all the usual gyrations. A cold reboot was needed, both times. I haven't had that glitch in a while, and they aren't the only glitches I experience. If FWv3.0 makes the system more stable, and nothing more at all, it will satisfy me enough till the upgrade. Emotiva is not going to perfectly fix all the problems with what is now a 5 year old legacy processor. People need to get over their 'collective disappointment'. When the upgrade comes, I will get current technology for about $700. Combined with my cost to purchase my RMC-1L three years ago, I will still be paying less than the cost of a Marantz 8005. I could always pay a total of 2-7 times more right now, and hopefully get everything I want right now. A Trinnov is not realistically in my budget. I will be playing with G3P, G4P, G5P, G6P, and G7P, before I reach the cost of one current Trinnov with no upgrades. What upgrade path is there for a Monoprice HTP-1? How about for a Marantz 8005? Will I be able to upgrade from a Marantz 8005 to an AV-10 for $700? I would gladly pay a bit more for Emotiva to get better FW function with fewer issues and a more extensive feature set. Emotiva is learning some tuff lessons and getting a lot of tuff love from it's customers - and some of the most vocal, even here, are not real customers.

Very interesting on the DISC playback issues. I have not had any issues with handshake with any of my DISC players....Oppo...Sony...Emotiva.....strange.

I check in from time to time to see if anything new has surfaced in the Emotiva world, and if not I just go back to my life.
I look forward to the new firmware, the new G4 processor, whatever. I enjoy this hobby. But coming on the forum and complaining doesn't make anything change any faster. If you are having problems that you hope firmware will fix I understand the frustration, but again getting worked up about it will change nothing. The new firmware will come when it comes.
In fairness many years ago I was one of the early buyers of the UMC-1. So when I came back to Emotiva I came back eyes wide open. And I probably bitched and moaned as much as the next guy after receiving my UMC-1 after waiting forever and really having high expectations. After coming from an Onkyo pre/pro that was great to me the UMC-1 was a big disappointment because it didn't just work, and had many firmware upgrades that never seemed to fix it. I went back to Onkyo and had another great experience.
Maybe I'm a masochistic, or just enjoy a challenge or whatever but in June of 2021 I got the bug to get a different pre/pro to get Atmos. I thought about the AV8805. Did some forum reading and they had an HDMI card issue and a few firmware upgrades at time, but overall I knew it would be a much safer bet. I came here and spent some time on the G3 threads and again knew exactly what I was getting into but still decided to pull the trigger on the RMC-1.
I have no regrets because I knew better where to set my expectations this time, and have enjoyed owning the RMC-1. Great sound quality, and after turning off all arc stuff and making some changes to my systems that some might call work arounds I have a system that works for me.
If you read that last sentence and think "But I shouldn't have to turn off arc, I shouldn't have to figure out a work around" etc. your expectations are not inline with the Emotiva product you've purchased. If you didn't know it when you purchased your G3, you know it now so either adjust your expectations and try to be happy or move on to a different product. I doubt the G4 will be any different of an experience for anyone. Emo is a small company in an industry that changes very fast. They will never be able to have the level of R&D that the companies under the Sound United umbrella have at their disposal.
But that said I like the idea of bunch of guys working to put out products that rival the big companies gear at a lower price. I like the idea that if I saw Big Dan in the airport somewhere he might take a few minutes and say hi. He is a real person. I like that there is this little tribe of Emo people who try to help each other on this forum work through issues and that there are Emo staff as well that interact with us from time to time. All of that make it more of a hobby, and I love it.
I had to get a new air conditioner for my house a few months ago. As I sit here I can't remember what brand it is, what model, anything. I don't care, I just want it work. I wonder if after the excitement of shopping the different models and choosing a pre/pro if the RMC-1 "just worked" if the hobby would be as fun? It would just be watching a movie or listening to music. Kind of like coming home to a cool house, its nice but you quickly take it for granted and don't even think about the equipment doing it. I think I just figured out why I came back to Emotiva!

There seems to be a lot of Emotiva apologists on here, talk about good grief.
Let's just look at the facts. Emotiva sold a product (rmc-1 which I own) that was supposed to be expandable to 28 channels and future proof. Emotiva marketed that to it's customers and took our money. Other then that feature the RMC-1 does not offer any competitive advantage over it's competition. In fact, knowing they failed at their implementation - it's worse. They FAILED to deliver that feature, they did not deliver on DLBC like it's competition did - regardless of whether Emotiva said they would have that feature the competition delivered, Emotiva - NOPE. In fact we still don't have features like DTS-X Pro. Forget that many people, myself included, still have annoying bugs that just shouldn't exist 5 years after this product was launched. 9 months for another firmware update?
Now they want us to fork over more of our hard earned money to buy a new product that does what exactly? Does this G4P do what my RMC-1 was supposed to do? Let me guess be a beta test user for them for 3 years with a glitchy product and doesn't deliver on it's promises... Now I need to pay $700 - 1400 for me to have what was already promised? How about at the very least pay all of us RMC-1 owners $1000 and a deep heart felt apology for screwing up in the hopes of retaining us as loyal customers instead? Why did I pay $1000 more for this thing?
I don't care about what happened with Dirac, that's their problem, not mine. They made choices, they were bad choices and should own up to them.
Ridiculous!

I will point out that you CAN play DSD files natively on the RMC-1L. And you absolutely can do so using an Oppo configured to output DSD over HDMI (you need to set it NOT to "convert DSD output to PCM"). We've done that on our Oppo 203 - with both SACD discs and separate files (I would have assumed that the Reavon could also do it... but I cannot vouch for that.) (You will sacrifice being able to use "processing features" like Dirac Live since that sort of processing cannot be done to DSD content.) I do regret that we haven't gotten DSD-over-USB enabled yet... although we did promise it... and it's still on our roadmap. Note that the copy protection on physical SACD discs disallows delivering the content you play from them over an unencrypted digital connection - which seems to preclude USB. Therefore, if you "honor" those license requirements, you would only be able to play DSD files via USB. (Although, since you cannot play SACD discs on a computer, because there are no "computer SACD drives", and I don't know of any disc player with a USB audio output, that is probably moot.) (There is no problem with delivering the content via HDMI because an HDMI connection is encrypted and so "secure".) I've looked at other processors as well as receivers and can't really find anything that would pull me away from Emotiva. The products are either way too expensive for my taste, or don't have XLR inputs (less expensive receivers). Then if you put any credence into testing by ASR, a majority of these boxes are not recommended. I thought the new Onkyo receiver with Dirac looked interesting, but ASR says"no good". If you look at other forums, most of the other products have issues also. I don't want to buy another set of problems. I also don't have the means to spend on something like Trinnov. So, what is one to do? So far for my 5.1 system use, I'd say I'm 95% happy with the XMC-2. That may change once I go to Atmos in the next couple years, but who knows. I feel pretty much the same. I love the feature set and the look of the McIntosh MX180. But it's way, way too pricey. I run sources from Vinyl (Balanced - Reference Stereo), Roon via Streambox Ultra (HDMI - Direct), AppleTV 4K (HDMI - Direct), Reavon X-200 / Audio only output (Direct - HDMI), Reavon X-200 / Video Output (HDMI - Auto). I output to an aging projector (yes Brent - THAT OLD) and a variety of pro-monitors when I need to. I never have connection issues with the Vinyl, Streambox or AppleTV inputs, other than the occasional pop on changing input or the RMVC-1L not properly recognizing a change in codec or getting the decoding wrong altogether (easily fixed by just changing inputs and back again). My main issues are with playback of SACD, CD, BluRay & DVD. No matter what DVD player I try (Oppo, Panasonic, Sony, Reavon) there are aways handshake issues. But never with Apple TV, or Firestick, or Chromecast (the latter 2 I only use when looking at BAFTA or Academy Screeners). The only other big issue is the continued inability to play DSD files natively, which is stated as a feature on the RMC-1L online. Combined with the frequent need to reboot the processor when it starts to behave weirdly. So I'd put my satisfaction a little lower than yours. Maybe 75%

I'm not apologizing for Emotiva. Not my place to speak for them, just for myself. I'd guess if you search the Lounge back to the time of the UMC-1 you'll probably find a post from yours truly that probably echoed the same feelings as you are expressing about the RMC-1. Clearly you are unhappy with the RMC-1 and the way Emotiva does things. Life is too short to be unhappy. Sell your RMC-1 and move on to a different brand. In my eyes this is a hobby, it is for fun. NOBODY needs a $?,000 pre/pro. It's ridiculous in all honesty. But I guess that could be said about anything after Maslow's bottom level of needs. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk with the "don't let the door hit you in the ass" attitude, just really from one person to another if something makes you unhappy get away from it and find something that does.

Keith, forgive me if I'm mistaken here, but DSD encoded on to an SACD disk is not the same as a Digital File. Maybe it's me but I don't recall anyone describing "playing an SACD" as "playing back DSD Files from an SACD". Maybe I just heard wrong. Also, given that SACD playback is limited to DSD64, the "files" I have (that cannot be encoded onto any SACD) are sadly unplayable on my RMC-1L. I had assumes that "playing DSD files" mean using a thumb drive or hard-drive onto which DSD files were stored. This way I can play the DSD256 "files" that are not available on SACD. From the current literature on Emotiva's website, it is implied (rather unambiguously) that it is possible to play back DSD files natively via USB. The exact wording from the website is still: * (1): USB Type B digital audio (UAC2 USB audio up to 24/192k) * Digital PCM and DSD audio supported on all HDMI inputs and USB input A little misleading perhaps. Pointed this out nearly two years ago. Maybe, as I have suggested, the published specifications be changed to: * (1): USB Type B digital audio (UAC2 USB audio up to 24/192k) * Digital PCM and DSD64 audio supported on all HDMI inputs * DSD64 files over USB may at some point become available in the future, after a firmware and/or hardware update, most likely as DSD over PCM DoP * DSD256 files over USB are unlikely ever to be available for playback on this device Regardless, this ins't a major issue, just one of a host of minor issues that cumulatively get aggravating on a daily basis. Please let me know if I'm being too picky. I'm trying to readjust my expectations appropriately. I will point out that you CAN play DSD files natively on the RMC-1L. Maybe 75%

Ridiculous! Emotiva made several "promises" relative to the G3 processors as an inducement to customers. Emotiva has an absolute obligation to perform on those promises, period. All customers who purchased G3 processors have been financially damaged unless Emotiva lives up to their promises. Expecting a customer to just take his losses and slink away in order to find "happiness" is a bit much. Customers put their money upfront and trusted Emotiva to fulfill their promises. Trust like that from a customer base is hard to come by. It is not like customers can go back, get their money and buy new equipment with the missing features. Either they accept their fate, as is, or they spend more for more Emotiva equipment that most likely will still not provide the features originally promised. I hope things eventually work out, but the track record is not predictive of success.

Do we have an anticipated date for 3.0? This year? Unknown, but my best guess would be spring of 2023.
