Lonnie says:Sorry it took so long for me to jump in here and give you some quick specs on these. Inputs (both) 1) AES/EBU 1) Coax Digital 1) Optical Digital 1) USB Internals Dac very similar to what is in the ERC-1. Burr Brown buffers coming out of the DAC and a fully discrete output stage like what is in the ERC-1 and USP-1. Outputs 2) Unbalanced RCAs 2) Balanced XLRs (all outputs are hgh voltage) For the full size unit we can add in volume and such. Obviously the full size unit would cost at least 50.00 more than the small unit. ;D

I am sitting here debating if I should admit that I'm so stupid I don't know what this sleek looking new device is for. In a desperate attempt to try and hide my ignorance I Googled DAC and learned it stands for Digital Analog Converter... so now what?
Anyway I vote for consistency. If I bought one to use it for that thing it does I would want it to be just as wide as my XPA-5 sitting on my component shelf.
Hmmmm.... Should I post this?.... decisions, decisions....

I like the rack mount as well. Consistency is good.

Any performance difference? Any cost difference? And any details on this DAC inside this thing?
I could go with either size. But I sure hope that volume control is digital or passive on the analog side. I am tired of all the DACs on the market that keep trying to be more than DACs.

I know a few things...
1. As you can see from the images, the larger unit would have more features. 2. The unit would definitely be black, with silver trim and blue lights. 3. Anteaters swallow 35,000 ants and termites whole every day.
We feel that the DAC used in the ERC-1 is pretty dang smackin', and doing an external DAC would be a project that was already halfway there. Lonnie feels that a 'real' rack sized version is cooler than the majority of external DACs out there, which more or less look like external hard drives or cable modems.
A good external DAC would quickly become an important part of your setup...we are more more and more towards server-based audio and video files.
More facts...er...Lonnie? *Looks around*

I know some people get "jittery" at the thought, but a USB port would be a nice feature.

I would say no matter the features, go with the larger size. Has a more audiophile look to it and it fits with the rest of the equipment. Also, if you can build in some audio enhancement features like up sampling or compression algorithms, I think that would go over well. If you can't do that economically, then I would say skip anything fancy like volume controls and just create a straight dac in a wide chassis with some extra shielding and incredible op/amps to make me feel good inside. :-) Oh yes, and if you can make the input switching switch via IR with the upcoming preamps, that would be spiffy and eliminate an additional remote. Something like this at 250-300 would sell like hotcakes! www.computeraudiophile.com/bryston-bda-1-dac-review

Gettin ready to dig into the server based audio/video thing myself. Will definently be looking for a high quality DAC. Rack mount trips my trigger as well. Goes with my x series amp and the rsp-2.

I have to go with the larger one. My Cambridge Dacmagic just didn't look right sitting on the audio rack with the rest of my gear. Now it's hiding out next to the computer.
