Yes, it would have a digital volume control so it could be used as a stand-a-lone piece. Just connect a digital source into the unit and the outputs to an amp and your good to go. ;D That's just great! I love the idea, I was looking into upgrading my E-MU 0404 USB DAC soon, and I will be waiting for this indefinitely. The only thing I will miss is the 1 analog IN to just pass through for volume control then to amp. Also - an idea to maybe consider is having 2 seperate outputs - 1 that bypasses the preamp, so users who already own your preamp can plug into that then the amp. Similiar to the Beresford 7520. Of course you could also throw in a headphone amp in the front as well My only concern for the digital volume is to not make the same mistake musical fidelity did with the MD-10; which was the increments in the volume weren't very subtle (esp. at lower listening levels) making it difficult to get to the volume you wanted. And yes 96/24 at minimum please, 192 would be better ;D Either way, where do I sign up for the preorder list

Oh and will it have a remote control for the volume?

I think that the full size DAC/Pre with volume control is the ONLY way to go. Regardless of how nice the ERC-1 is, and I do plan to buy one, we have to face the fact that the life span of physical media is getting shorter by the day. Sooner or later pretty much EVERYTHING will be digital making analog pre-amps all but useless. The days of buying dedicated CD players are numbered as well. In this economy money it tight. Making it a DAC/Pre means one less component that the consumer needs to buy. I say go for the Benchmark DAC 1 Pre-HDR/Bel Canto DAC3 crowd.

Dann - is there a targeted price point yet for the full size model?

I suppose if one is primarily interested in high resolution lossless multi-channel audio from Blu-Ray, then these DACs don't make much sense, since those audio formats go over HDMI?

I am sitting here debating if I should admit that I'm so stupid I don't know what this sleek looking new device is for. In a desperate attempt to try and hide my ignorance I Googled DAC and learned it stands for Digital Analog Converter... so now what? Anyway I vote for consistency. If I bought one to use it for that thing it does I would want it to be just as wide as my XPA-5 sitting on my component shelf. Hmmmm.... Should I post this?.... decisions, decisions.... ......... floridaguy - in the excitement over this announcement I am not sure your question got answered, and if not, I will make an awkward attempt to do so from the traditional source perspective (e.g., non server-based). You would use this DAC to go in between your source component (e.g., CD player, for example) and your preamp. The digital signal from the source would travel to the DAC which would handle the decoding duties and then send the signal on to the preamp which send it to the speakers. (I may have butchered that so I'll let the experts correct me). The logic of using a DAC is that many CD players today are decent transports that have weak DACs. So by incorporating a high quality DAC into your system, you'll potentially get much improved sound. I hope this helped.

Dann - is there a targeted price point yet for the full size model? No, but it would be in line with our established price model...less than the ERC-1, I think.

I don't think I need one (since I have the ERC) but I want one anyway because I have a sickness. Indeed.

After waiting many months for the ERC-1 only to be dissapointed that there was no easy way to implement analog bass management when hooked to my MMC-1 processor might there be an outside chance this new dac will have an analog sub out? I haven't seen a dac yet that does but I find it strange that I'm the only one that has this problem of upgrading stereo sound with an av processor.

Hope you reconsider your target market and put out a DAC that will compete directly with the Benchmark USB. It is an opportunity for EMO to appeal to a much wider audience and put EMO on the map once and for all. mP

This is where the USP-1 or another preamp comes in. I use the Parasound 2100 for exactly this purpose.

Can anyone explain why I'd want a volume control on my dac? I already have a man-size Emo remote which does a nice job on volume.

Soon, there will be ZERO need for analog inputs. It's a digital world my friend. Look at Bel Canto's DAC 3 and Benchmark's DAC 1 Pre and DAC 1 HDR. It eliminates the need for a pre-amp.

The volume knob would be geared more towards those wanting to use the DAC specifically in a 2-channel setup.

Why would I want to pay more if I can get a good DAC for a good price? I buy Emotiva because of their price model. I have previously been very interested getting a DAC that incorporates the the Analog Devices chipset that is in the ERC-1 and will presumably therefore also be in this DAC, but DIY kits started at over $800 for just the board components & circuit board, never mind chassis and power supply. personally, I think this will be a good buy for anyone with a media server or streaming server who has been looking for a good DAC but can't stomach the prices of the Bel Canto's and the BenchMarks. Someone like me. Although, i'm also looking at twistedpearaudio's implementation of the SABRE32 DAC. I say, let the reviews do the talking. What would be nice, is if there was a way to utilize all channel stereo from a DAC like this. Been looking for something like that.

Depending on price, I would buy the smaller one and sell my Entech 205.2. I would use it with my Squeezebox Duet. The Entech is an improvement on the Duet's DAC, so the Emo should be even better.

I'm with you on that..I would definitely be interested in a DAC of that quality. My preference would be for the full rack mount sized one with the extra doo dads.
I've paid some big bucks for external DACS in the past. I still have and use a PS Audio Ultra Link II that I paid 2 grand for in 1993. I think your new DAC would outperform it easily.
