Okay, although this is my first post I've been watching this thread from early on.
1. I really hope this DAC would have a firewire input in addition to a usb, toslink, coaxial - therefore offering something no other standalone comsumer product on the market current offers.
2. I really hope this DAC would utilize the emotiva Apple license and provide the "handshake" that the wadia i170 product offers.
3. I really hope this DAC decodes HDCD too.

I know Emotiva is working hard on the UMC-1 firmware and issues. But, is there any word when this might be released?

An interesting stance to take? Why would I want to pay more if I can get a good DAC for a good price? If EMO wants to do a DAC based on the same DAC as the ERC-1, then EMO might as well incorporate the access to DAC on the ERC-1, everything that is needed for a DAC is already there. The additional cost would be minor, this will allow the owner to be able to just throw in a CD instead of firing up his/her computer to play some music. There are times when I just play one CD through my CDP because I may only half an hour to kill. A combo CDP/DAC would accomplish both at a reasonable additional cost to the ERC-1 (just like the Cambridge A - 840C). I believe the new McIntosh MCD 500 uses the Sabre chip, however, the design and the implementation of the MCD 500 is their own design. I am with you on the EMO's philosophy of good value for $$$ that is why I think that EMO can design and build a medium/high quality DAC to compete with Benchmark/Del Canto at a much more competitive price. EMO may have the economy of scale that other niches players do not have (Neko, Stello). Why would I want to pay more if I can get a good DAC for a good price? There already are tons of good to excellent (for this price point) sub $500 DACs out there . I am not sure if we need another one. I am not sure if EMO will be able to attract the crowd that are in this target market. What I think is an opportunity for EMO is to produce the Benchmark USB quality or higher (both the built and sound) and priced it very very competitively to attract a mid level DAC buyers. Since DAC is still a hot product and assuming that EMO can succeed in its new DAC, it will be a proof of its "best bang for the buck" philisophy to the general public, leverage this to the rest of the product lines and ........there is not limit to future success. mP It is a very interesting argument you make, but I believe we can build a fully differential 192 DAC with selectable inputs, discrete output stage, remote, etc, for around 300.00 and meet or exceed the quality of the Benchmark. I could be wrong here, so don't hold me to it, but it really shoudn't cost anything close to what others are asking. ;D Peter Aczel on the Benchmark: "The volume control of the DAC1 HDR is based on a motorized Alps potentiometer custom-made for this model and remotely controllable. Its gain circuit is designed to maintain the full dynamic range of the unit’s audio signal path, unlike digital volume controls that limit the dynamic range at various settings. This is the feature that sells me most decisively on this preamp/DAC. It consolidates and refines an ultrasophisticated nerve center for a stereo system on a single tiny chassis. Everything you need is there." Lonnie, We really would like to hear about the DAC. It would be ideal in my current 2 channel set up if you told the truth that day... The Benchmark is actually at least 5 years old (DAC1) so I imagine meeting its performance should be possible for less money today.

Count my brother in for one of these, at least if it meets the target capabilities and a reasonable price. For someone with all digital sources, this thing would make a perfect DAC/Pre combo. No need for an analog Preamp at all...
I'd love to see actual photos and get a sense of what the remote will do!

Actual pics, specs and pricing coming very soon. just waiting on the cosmetic prototype to arrive. I have an engineering mule, but it is far from pretty. So if all goes well, maybe in another week I can have them for you. BTW, I don't know if I actually posted what it really looks like or not so here it is.

Having never owned an external DAC I have what is probably a stupid question. To play from my PC would I run the ethernet from the DAC to the PC and then the DAC out RCA's to the Aux in on my USP-1? Would all playback then be generated from the PC with the Aux selected on the USP-1? Vol. control would be the USP-1? Right now I'm networking with my Integra DHC 40.1 but I'm assuming the Emo DAC would be superior to the Integra DACs.
Also; Did I read the DAC would actually be superior to the ERC-1. If that's the case would I run a digital out from the ERC-1 to the DAC?

Nice! Was thinking of buying a preamp together with this DAC, but can I use this one as a preamp for my 2xUPA-1's? And would it be a big upgrade to get the XSP-1 later on when it's released?

So you would connect the DAC to your PC using a digital out from the PC, and then connect the DAC analog output to your preamp for volume control, etc.

The Analog out of the dac would plug into the USP-1 or other Pre/Pro device. Here are a couple diagram examples

Based on the images he posted, it looks like the DAC will have volume control so yes, it can be used as a Pre-amp and can be plugged directly into the UPA-1's. *note*That is an assumption on my part based on the images above.

Thanks, assumed that aswell. Only question is how big of difference it would be to get a "proper" preamp. Will probably get one eventually, but if this one can get the job done with good results I can wait a few months for the XSP-1
