HDMI wouldn't be necessary for everybody but I would prefer it because I prefer using my Harmony remote and seeing everything on the big screen. So there is definitely need at least in my case. Different assumptions... I'm assuming the streamer would be controllable from a phone or tablet app; you're assuming it would have some sort of UI that needs a remote control. I'm simply saying that IF it's controllable from an app, there is no need for HDMI port as the phone app can be casted to a TV, projector, etc. to display album art. Even if it only has a web based UI, there is no need for an HDMI port as you can hit the web based app from any device... PC, phone / tablet and cast it to any display. If it's ONLY controllable from a UI with a remote control, then sure, HDMI would be a welcomed addition for album art. My Zidoo 2600 can be controlled by an app on my phone or with an IR remote. I prefer the remote option using the TV and remote to navigate over using the phone app to do the same. I'm sure the HDMI out would give me that option or you could use the phone app in which case you wouldn't need the HDMI out. Good to have choices.

Ah... now I better understand your use case... since the Zidoo is an audio / video streamer, sure, 1000% agreed with you there. When streaming movies via my Nvidia Shield I prefer to use a remote.
When streaming music with my Cambridge CXN V2 audio only streamer... my phone or iPad worked perfectly fine as I found it easier and quicker to select music, search, queue a playlist, etc. etc. To be honest, I don't think I ever touched the remote for the Cambridge...
Choices are always good... no doubt; just a difference of opinion.

I’m voting for a full size chassis like the XDA-3.

YES... a separate box.
At the moment some of the physical details are still being discussed...
But we're talking about an actual "small unit" - not a full 17" rack mount - not a little tiny black plastic box either - probably an HDMI output to display stuff like album art on your big screen
I like this idea. I like the HDMI option to be able to use a TV or Monitor. I hope to keep the cost down to NOT HAVE A DAC. I rather use an external DAC. HDMI just for video purposes. I've been asking Wiim to make a Wiim streamer without a DAC for a while now.

I can't wait for more details on the upcoming streaming feature of the EMO processors.

As I said... not everything is finalized yet... but something in that neighborhood. Maybe the size and shape of the DC-1

What’s a fully balanced streamer? I can guess..
I use digital out with my bluesound node so I’m not sure if it’s relevant in my use case if a fully balanced streamer means, using XLR out from the streamer and bypassing the DAC on my XMC2.
Of course if this means an improvement in my 2 channel sound then I’m interested but I’d think I need to bypass the XMC2 altogether as it’s preamp section is not as good as a dedicated 2 channel preamp (much more expensive though).
So would this mean the streamer would have balanced in and out? ie some sort of a HT bypass mode.

I was interested years ago when Emotiva first was talking a streamer. But, my audio streaming needs are quite well-met these days. So, I'll look at what they end up offering, but with Roon through various devices (Sonore Ultrarendu/LH Labs DAC, 2 R-Pi's w/HAT DAC's, and multiple Sonos units running sound all over the house) and with Tidal and my music library on a HD integrated...there's not anything else I want or need. For me to ditch what I have would have to have a hugely compelling benefit over my current system.

We've been discussing the possibility of an Emotiva Audio Streamer for some time now...
We've looked at a lot of options... And examined how we can make a meaningful entry into the audio streamer market... And a LOT of folks seem very interested in this subject...
ALL I CAN SAY FOR NOW IS THAT THIS IS GOING TO BECOME A REALITY IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE. We're not releasing any further details yet... so don't even ask... but we now have actual hardware and software lined up... So it is going to happen... soon... Hi Keith. Can you offer an update on Streamer production?

I really can't discuss the details yet... But what I've seen so far is super-impressive... And we're looking at around three months... We've been discussing the possibility of an Emotiva Audio Streamer for some time now...

Makes me wonder how the Emotiva streamer will do against Wiims new streamers?

Completely forgot about this... so many options out there... fingers crossed it competes well or beats the competition.

Saw the podcast on the new streamer. Looks great. Question about it. It was mentioned that the unit was logged into Dan's Volumio account. Volumio has 2 tiers. Regular and Premium. Is Volumio Premium included with the streamer? Is that for the lifetime of the product or limited?

I grabbed a couple screenshots from the podcast to add here. Some were hoping for a full sized unit, and that’s a no, I believe they described it as ‘half rack’ size, and mentioned other products in a possible ’Exec’ line would also have this form factor (they had a similar idea a few years back).

So it's a Volumio based streamer; besides the streamers that Volumio makes, it has some very strong competition. For example, Cambridge Audio has some great streamers... I loved my CXN v2. Their CXN100 is the CXN v2 replacement; around $1,100; they have others starting at $499. A Raspberry Pi running RoPieee (free) connected to a Denafrips Ares II DAC is a fantastic combo that is Roon compatible and will run around $900.

I definitely think how Emotiva prices this streamer will make or break the product. Telling us that there is a CM4 module in there may devalue it a bit for some. Also using software available to anyone may also devalue it a bit as well.
I've built and used a few Pi4 music nodes. I use Ropieee for roon on them. I've bought Digital output cards and fancy power supplies and everything. Even designed and 3d printed a few enclosures including one for the official touch screen. They always still seem out of place in my actual system. (even used that flirc case)
I'd be excited for a real audio component that has had special care for isolation inside the chassis. An actual metal chassis and basically a real audio component. Caveat- pricing matters.
Bryston did this a couple years ago and charge like $1500 without a DAC in it.

I'm happy with my streamer options right now and curious to see what it brings. Right now, I use Room to an Ultraredndu for my main listening area, and an Allo Boss streamer/DAC for my headphone station. Mark
