Well guys in Sept I bought a brand new Klipsch RF-83 system, dual subs, and the Emotiva XPA-5, that was about 5 months ago, this was my first system and so I didn't own a receiver, I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the UMC-1, sad to say I finally caved and bought a Onkyo 886, I was going to wait, but the last straw was Big Dave's statement that a firmware upgrade would be ready "Monday or Tuesday" that was a week ago. I'll let you know how the system sounds next week, when the Onkyo comes in.

*Emo fanboy mode on* That thing is going to suck compared to the UMC-1, there's going to be a huge difference in sound quality, as the UMC-1 is the best processor available under $10,000. A firmware update in the first week it's on sale is to be expected for a product that was held back from being sold for months so it could be made perfect. You're an Emo hater, and need to go enjoy your crappy Onkyo product until it overheats and burns down your house. *Emo fanboy mode off*

The Onkyo receivers run hot, not the preamps.

It's too bad you couldn't wait, especially when getting a UMC-1 was oh so close, but you had to do what you had to do to get your system up and running. Just curious what did you pay for the 886 and where did you get it. I thought the 886's were about extinct since the 5507 and 40.1/80.1's are shipping. The only place that I know of that actually has them in stock is Outlaw and at a $1449 premium. Hope you enjoy the XPA-5.

LC, You are right and the last batch of 886's went to Outlaw and included the latest firmware. The 886 has now been retired. Ya know I do not care what other folks buy or why they make their choices. It is all good. I do like to trade ideas here and let everyone make their own choices. I personally think the Emo brand has won me over though as I think the value for the dollar and quality put into the products makes owning them, and upgrading my gear a new found priority.

I bought it at outlaw, yeah I paid a premium, but it's still a good product, and if that's "outdated" then the UMC-1 is really outdated, check the specs/processors, onkyo has everything UMC has and more. The new Onkyo processor 5507 is not worth it, it's 2500 and the main difference is it has support for 9 channels, don't know anyone who needs 9 speakers. The other thing that all these preamps have that really is unnecessary is video processing, at this level I think we all run HD content only, and so video processing may improve the picture some, but actually more often can degrade the picture. I always run pass-thru modes.

I always run pass-thru modes. But the main reason the 886 is so much is because of the video section. State of the art Reon, independent IFS cable calibrations for each video input, etc. The audio section is not really why one would chose this particular unit. Is having Audyssey EQ really worth that much?
