I got the winrar 64 bit to extract the files perfectly. I just cannot get my computer to recognize the UMC. It keeps showing up as device unknown. I have the red "X" when the emo software is running. ?

I want to thank Ratmice for the heads up on using my printer cable to complete the download. The download of the SW went very well, everything sounds great (better than I ever thought). The volume speed is a plus. I am very happy and very impressed.

I can't believe I read vinyl and all channel stereo in the same post... I can understand wanting it while you are doing other things around the house but my god. OK, I know this is going to upset a few people here but here goes. If you sit down in your listening area, have the good sense to use vinyl and turn on ALL SPEAKER STEREO, you are nuts, you are the SQ anti-Christ, you deserve to spend eternity listening to MP3's. If you have the nuts to gripe about this, you need to save yourself a ton of money and go out and buy yourself a cheap AVR at Best Buy because that is as good as you need. I will probably be banned and I am fine with that but at least I am making my stand. I understand problems with firmware, sq, pq, and other problems, this is an issue. LISTENING TO PRISTINE VINYL IN ALL CHANNEL STEREO IS AN AUDIOPHILE SIN! Not if you have a exceptional system and calibrated just right vinyl especial MFMR(mobile fidelity master recording) and all channels can be like your there experience , it takes some work to get it just right but well worth it IMHO

I wouldn't give a hoot about this. The UMC-1 sounds amazing, it sounds great in its DPL formats if that is your thing. I have no problem with people using what the product comes with. Go to town.
I do have a problem with people griping as if the product was was worthless because it doesn't support a specific DSP... should it have Jazz, Hall, Concert, Kennel, Out House, Rock, and all the rest? If it does, great... if it doesn't... buy something else.
My specific comment was related to vinyl however, take anything else as you may...

Not a dig on anybody....but How is that Emotiva is seemingly doing the FW at their place with much better luck..?? Is it possible that the procedure is dependent on the exact same setting that their PC's are using?? It's also possible that most people have no problems and aren't here telling us about it because they are having fun instead Heh, well I guess I qualify for this. I ran the update this morning and have been playing with the UMC on and off since. I can confirm the following are fixed/working: - Video Resolution lock - "EQ Mode" in the Input Setup - Random bitstream audio dropout when pausing, FF, REW, switching chapters - Audio drop out from my PC via coax after pausing for a few minutes when I step away Someone else posted they used a Vista 32 bit laptop, which is also what I used and it went without a hitch. From download, to app unrar/install, to update I think it took 12 minutes total. It would have been shorter if I wasn't reading the PDF all the while. Granted I didn't have any install issues or what not like others have reported, this has to be the easiest firmware update I've ever applied. When it works - it works! Note that I also disabled the wireless radio and killed my firewall proggy and anti-virus. Upon completion the input names were garbled as other have mentioned, but no biggie since I planned (and did) reset back to factory default anyway.

Ok, so youse guys with updating problems - are you using premium silver USB 3.97 V2.01x3 cables from MONSTER???
If not that may be your problem
Seriously - a poor USB cable can really mess with your life and head.... Printers may not be very demanding so ensure you have a real USB 2 cable, not the old one you had in the drawer...

Agreed. Keep it on topic. Got my laptop to sorta work. Everything works up to the HDMI part of the file now. Get's to that point, the umc turns on and off about three times and then I get the no resonse crap and a code 2. Ran through the gamut of suggestions about how to deal with this prob, no luck. This particular laptop has been shelved for a good 6 months or better due to the aforementioned heat problem. Before that it had been good while since it's file system had been cleaned out, so I'm preforming a reinstall to see if that helps clear out the bloatware and maybe get this thing loaded tonight. Going on hour 12 of this ordeal...

Just read through all 13 pages so far. What a unique community as it seems that almost: 50% of posters have MAC's and 50% of posters don't have a laptop Talk about opposite ends of the technology spectrum! What if I have a Mac Laptop? What do I win? ;D ;D ;D

Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere but a search found nothing. Is there a firmware version displayed (or can be displayed) somewhere so that after the upgrade, I can confirm that the update was successful? (I know that the upgrade process itself may state this but want to know if there's somewhere in the menu system where the firmware version can be displayed). Thanks. Actually yes, all you have to do is while the umc is on, press Mute, then press Status then press Volume up. The VFD on the UMC will display the current software version for about 10 seconds. It won't show this on the OSD, just on the VFD. So if in doubt, you can always check and see. lonnie, when I try to mute/status/vol up procedure the display lasts less than a second but I think it is showing the updated FW info. Is there something to be concerned with since the displayed info is of such a short time frame?

I've read all 14 pages so far. I don't have a UMC-1 but am interested in getting one and so I've been actively following it.
Just to recap for anyone that doesn't want to read all 14 pages to get a feel...
It seems that there are several people having issues actually getting the firmware updated. Most of these issues seem to be pc/software/driver related.
Once you can get a successful firmware update...it appears that most people are reporting good results with the majority of bugs being fixed.
Sample size is still obviously too small...but if you can actually get the UMC updated with the new firmware...things are at least initially looking up!
Here's hoping positive FW upgrade reports keep coming in!

I tried the EmoQ... It didn't work quite well. First, the distances of most of the speakers were correct the second time, except the subwoofer. It claimed the phases were backwards on all the speakers except the sub. Also, it said the subwoofer was only 4 feet away. Afterward, when I looked in the distance settings, the sub was set to 19ft. It's actually ~12ft away.
The rest of the audio configuration didn't work as well. After it was complete, I looked in the crossover settings. (I forgot what it displayed immediately after it was complete, but I believe I remember seeing 20hz on the surrounds.) It said that crossover for the L/R Fronts were 250hz, and all other speakers were 40hz. The sub was set to 110hz. The surrounds are exactly the same as the fronts, which should all be around 40hz, 60hz would probably be better.
I also checked the EQ settings. All of the front channels at least looked like they were at a decent setting. However, there were values put in for the Right Rear, which doesn't even exist. The two surrounds, and the other rear were all completely flat.
I could say that it *might* be room dynamics for almost all of this, but putting EQ settings in for a speaker that doesn't exist? Seems like there's still a couple bugs in the auto config.
-- Oh, also just learned... don't keep an SA8300HDC paused over a couple minutes... it goes into some sort of sleep mode and crashes the UMC so you have to hold the power switch to cycle the system.

UMC1_V102_001 seems to update OK. Umc1HDMI_5.46.07_100208 starts but stops after about 10 seconds. No error message, but the status bar indicates: "Send "reset 0" command no response!" Any ideas? I was having the same trbls until I changed out to a shorter usb printer cable. After the swap I was able to complete the Umc1HDMI_5.46_100208 file to download. I don't know if it was a length issue with the cable or just a bad cable.

Ok. I've still got problems with this updater. From what I gather, there is no 64 bit version of the updater. You were simply saying to use winrar 64 bit? correct? I really don't see what the difference would be since winrar 32bit should run the same in win 7 64, though slightly slower, perhaps. In either case it's a non-issue since I had winrar 64bit installed long before the umc was even released. Everything works fine until I hit step 6. My computer simply will not except this driver. First it would get stuck trying to load the usbexpress device driver. I found a usb to ps2 adapter and was finally able to get past the locked usb using cntrl+shift+ esc and ctrl+alt+del. I click on the box that says install driver anyway and it does, but windows still does not recognize this device. In the device manager it shows the usbexpress device with a yellow exclamation point. when I click on properties it gives me a paragraph or so under device status about an improper digital signature and ends with Code 52. I have tried numerous ways to correct this. uninstalling reinstalling, safe mode, bypassing the updaters automatic driver install and going with exe under the driver folder (which doesn't require me to hit ctrl shift esc, etc to get to work for those that might be interested), update driver in device manager and point at the x64 directory for the drivers (it tells me the best ones are already installed or it can't find any.) I downloaded XP virtual machine only to find out that my computer's hardware doesn't support it and Microsoft, in all of their infinite wisdom, provides nothing but vague clues as to what "hardware" my computer is missing to get it to work. I'm down to about two options. 1.) Move my entire vista desktop within range of the usb cable 2.) or unhook the umc and take it to the vista machine. Neither one is appealing. I might have one other option where I can use my router as a middle man, but I've never had much luck getting that to work before. Any other thoughts on what I might be missing? I am not an IT guy so I honestly can't offer you any suggestions here. The only thing I can tell you what you probably don't want to hear and that is if you can't get it going, we will do it for you. One idea might be to use a virtual OS. If you have Windows Vista or XP - 64bit, you might look at Virtual PC from MS: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=enafter that you need an image: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=enAny of those images should work fine since they are all 32-bit systems. Also, I am planning on using one of these to make hooking up easier: www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030301&p_id=5436&seq=1&format=2I can hook that cable up and then use one of these to get distance: www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030304&p_id=5434&seq=1&format=2BTW, I agree that it is very frustrating on MS's decision about virtual pc and win 7. I use VirtualBox at work and just grab MSDN OSes to stuff into the virtual machines if I have to. I just thought the Virtual PC route might be a little more expeditious.

First download works fine, on second, power cycles a few times and then 'no response'. Power cycled everything, no joy. Vista 32-bit FWIW.
Kinda feels like there are timing tolerances that are cut just a bit fine...
Persnickity little bugger.

I had just about the same problems. Distances were wrong the first time, second time they were fine. Front speakers set to 250hz nothing for the subwoofer. Set my subwoofer level to -50db. I did have results for both back rear speakers which I don't have. I did have eq setting for all of the speakers except for the subwoofer. Manual eq for the subwoofer doesn't work on mine either but it didn't before the firmware upgrade. Mine is going back tomorrow, I think the emoq is really messed up on mine. It will be interesting to see what problems the find with my unit.

I had an extension cable when I tried the update... It refused to even acknowledge a working USB device. I ended up using an unpowered 4-port USB hub as the extension cable. Worked the first try. The hub was USB 1.1. If you have a 1.1 hub, maybe that will help?
