I pre-ordered the Samsung through Best Buy on Jan 2. It is due to ship Feb.12. I had an Oppo BDR83 that would not pass Dolby Atmos so I had to replace it. If all you are going to do is pass a bit stream to an AVR for decoding, then an Oppo is an expensive overkill.

There's not nearly enough media that will accompany this player to even begin to give me the urge to go buy a 4K/HDR flat panel at this infancy stage of UHD Blu-ray players. 2017 will be more likely for me, and I'm sure there will plenty of other models to choose from.

I have been wondering why Sony is not introducing a 4k player and they have such a vast library of movies. The price is not that high for the new players but I wonder if with 4k movies in the $30 plus price range they are waiting to see what sales will be. Why would they price the movies so high ?

The lowest price I've seen on the this recorder/player is $2299 and that just isn't going to bring too many sales of this unit of avid home theater enthusiasts. Panasonic's DMP-UB900 announced prices for this unit in Holland/France/UK are converting close to $1000usd, and IMO is still too steep for my blood, so again I'll just be patiently awaiting 2017 for more reasonable pricing on a more competitive field of offerings from Panasonic/Oppo/Sony/Samsung/etc., as well as moving closer to more affordable OLED flat panels.

The price of the discs will likely be cheaper than the list price. Just like they are with blu-Ray. I have a 4K tv but will wait to see Oppo's player(s).

What do you think the price of the replacement for the BDP-103 will be? Apparently the Mediatek UHD chips will be available mid-year, so I'm thinking late 2016 or early 2017 until we see any Oppo UHD blu-ray players for sale.

Yeah, I've spent $0 on audio/video gear last year because I'm also waiting. Probably first on my list will be a pair of Airmotiv S12 subs, while the rest can hopefully still wait.

Hard to guess.

I just pre-ordered my first 4k disc....
The price was $29.99 for the 4k Blu-Ray disc + regular Blu-Ray disc + Digital download. That was for "The Last Witch Hunter", which is a new/current release. The price was $5 more than the price of the package without the 4k disc.
I suspect that's what we'll be seeing from now on... and eventually the price will drop to what "regular" discs cost now. It only costs a buck or two to actually physically produce a disc, so you're paying for "what the market will bear" anyway.
However, beware of the whole bunch of discs now being conspicuously labeled as "Mastered in 4k". They are, of course, just regular Blu-Ray discs.
And, yes, I don't plan to bother with a player until the Oppo comes out. From the current list of the first movies scheduled for 4k, I only see one or two that I especially care about. Therefore, I don't expect there to be many I'll be waiting for by year end - when the Oppo player comes out. (Since they all seem to come with a regular Blu-Ray version, I won't have to wait to watch them anyway. And I figure that, if a lot more discs come out ahead of schedule, then Oppo will probably accelerate their schedule. )

I think there's about 100 releases scheduled for 2016. I'll probably buy the Samsung player soon, as I could use a new blu-ray player anyway.
Given that all of these UHD discs come with a standard blu-ray, I think we might see some $10 blu-ray disc-only sales on ebay soon.

I have the Samsung on pre-order from Amazon. Due to arrive March 1, along with a couple 4K disc (Martian and Witch Hunter). Want to see just how good these are compared to the 1080P Blu Ray up converted to 4k by the LG OLED TV. IF it is not that great of a difference, may see the Samsung, and wait for the OPPO later in the year. Have the OPPO-93 and an upgrade would be nice to have.

And I figure that, if a lot more discs come out ahead of schedule, then Oppo will probably accelerate their schedule. ) I think you have probably just answered my long awaited question, but since you are here I'll ask this. I have been wondering if we will see the same sort of multiple disc packs we've seen before, where a set comes with a Blu-ray and a DVD. Your purchase proves it appears that just might be the case. What I'd like to ask you from a technical standpoint is this, do you know if players will be capable of "down converting" a 4K signal to play as 1080p? (For example my DirecTV Genie has a setting where you can tell it what kind of TV you have and it will only output that signal). If they end up selling UHD discs alone with no regular Blu-ray included, then some buyers with older 1080p TV's are going to have to be careful to watch to make sure they are getting the right thing. After reading the limited Panny player info from the link, they make it sound like it will depend on the disc itself, and how it is coded with the copyright protection. They make it sound like it won't play properly or maybe not at all. I ask this because while I plan to buy a new Oppo sometime in the future (to replace my old Panny Blu-ray and my Denon DVD Universal), I don't have plans to change out my Panny ZT anytime soon. I will be upgrading to the Oppo for consolidation from 2 to 1, and perhaps getting even better sound than I'm getting from my Denon. The 4K part will be a future thing, not an immediate thing.

I suspect that the 4k disc sets at $29.99 (MSRP - $39.99) will follow the current pattern of starting at $29.99 and then in a few weeks, or months drop in price. For example I've noticed that The Martian was priced at $24.99 for the regular blu-ray and is now selling for $14.99. Hopefully that pattern holds. I plan to also purchase 4K titles which also include the standard blu-ray, but only those that really interest me and only new films. I don't plan on re-buying the older stuff. I've done that in the past, and I'm just not going to do it this time. From Oppo: Claude, We are looking to release our own UHD player this Summer to Fall. I am happy to wait for an Oppo. Mark If people recall, it took several rounds of models from the big boys to get their Blu-ray players (and even the now defunct HD-DVD) working well. Sony's own players all had issues for years, with only their PS3 being a good player. My Panasonic model was the first model that Sound & Vision could actually recommend, and it was like Panny's 4th design I think. The Oppo 83 came later. So I'm going to stay shy of the big boys this time, especially these first over priced early adopter models. I'm going to wait and see what Oppo has to offer. With any luck they will have what I see as being my very last disc machine.

I first started off with bata. Then switch to the industry standard VHS. After purchasing 1000 or so movies on VHS. Then DVD came along. I slowly started to replace my favorite movies on DVD than I already had on VHS. And then started slowly to buy Blue ray. Now that I have over 6000 titles on DVD. I'm staying out of this new better format. I have bought some of my Favorite movies four times over. For my eyes my video looks fine now. I see red as red blue as blue and so on. I get a little tired of just buying into the latest and greatest new audio and video just for the sake of doing it. Remember there was a time when Vinyl was obsolete and low and behold it is in fashion again. Ya, I will sit this one out. Just me.

I have no problem with the new format. Technology always marches forward and that's fine. I do buy my favorites on blu-ray. I never bought alot of VHS or dvd. mainly Disney titles for the kids. If you are really strong, renting is the way to go. No buying my favorites over again. The cost benefit is not there.
