I have been wondering why Sony is not introducing a 4k player and they have such a vast library of movies. The price is not that high for the new players but I wonder if with 4k movies in the $30 plus price range they are waiting to see what sales will be. Why would they price the movies so high ? Maybe because of the FMPX10? BTW you can get one pretty cheap now. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=SONY+FMPX10You know how Sony is with proprietary stuff.

What do you think the price of the replacement for the BDP-103 will be? Apparently the Mediatek UHD chips will be available mid-year, so I'm thinking late 2016 or early 2017 until we see any Oppo UHD blu-ray players for sale. I actually contacted and received an e-mail from Oppo stating that they expect a UHD player to be available for sale mid Summer to Fall. No price quoted. I'm hoping the price is not too high. Hard to guess. Thanks for that update on the time frame, good to know since this is coming straight from Oppo.

I plan to also purchase 4K titles which also include the standard blu-ray, but only those that really interest me and only new films. I don't plan on re-buying the older stuff. I've done that in the past, and I'm just not going to do it this time. Same here as I'm already seeing that blu-ray on a 4K is actually very much watchable.

Maybe The Martian for me. Liked that one. X-Men Apocalypse, because I tend to watch the Marvel movies over again.

Well my Samsung K8500 is going to show up tomorrow. Of course I won't have any 4K discs until March 1 or so. I think I will hook it up as an additional player (I have an Oppo 103) in my system and take the HDMI video output directly to my Samsung JS8500 tv and the HDMI sound output to my Marantz AV7702. I will therefore only use it for UDH disc viewing. I have a HDFury Integral but I can't see any advantage in using it at the moment.

And of those 39, only the Sony releases were produced from 4K masters. All of the others are produced from 2K DI's. Still better than 1080p, but not quite what they're "supposed" to be. HERE is an interesting read.

Thanks Doc, good read. I'm glad I got my last generation Panasonic plasma when I did as it should easily last until 4K gets much more mature.

HERE is an interesting read. What a wonderfully informative article. It may be time to start collecting UHD movies, but certainly not time to be buying UHD displays.

HERE is an interesting read. Yep, and this is the stuff I've been trying to say. Great article. This year is a bad year to be buying a display. Things need to get themselves sorted out first.

I respect that they are proprietary. Our Chevron additive is proprietary. Good stuff. Sony makes a good user interface on there gear. You want good all channel output and a good user interface for a A/V receiver go Sony. They make very good Blu-ray players and Displays. They have a large library of Media. I watch there moves on stuff like this.

Virtually all of 2016 UHDTVs will be compliant with the standards for HDR and Rec. 2020 set at CES in Vegas this January by UHD Alliance: Maybe at CES they were, but the very article you posted speculates otherwise. "It will be interesting to see how many of the upcoming TVs for 2016 actually manage to meet the Ultra HD Premium standards; early evidence suggests it will only be pretty high-end (and therefore relatively expensive) models."So I say again, this year is a bad year to buy a display.

I have faith you'll get over it Nick! Not when prices for used 3D Blu-rays go through the roof. Better buy all you can now Nick!

4K will make a huge improvement for me with my 135" sitting 12' away. However I think a better 1080P projecter for better blacks/contrast would have even a better difference. Even still I need to wait for an affordable 4K projector (~2500) before I invest into 4K. I think by the time this happens the 4K from Oppo will be released. So for me I'm looking around 4K to move to 4K lol.... when all the equipment is available at these price points I will upgrade. Till then I'm working on my audio. Second subwoofer and more acoustics My only plan for 2016 is this.

And by the way, watch that "HDCP 2.2" in your A/V chain if you want to make sure you can actually enjoy UHD........ This anti-piracy stuff is a boon for manufacturers. Forced replacement.

Forced replacement means continued profit share. HDMI 2.0b will be around the corner, just watch. I posted this before. A little HDMI history lesson: HDMI 1.0 was released December 9, 2002 HDMI 1.1 was released on May 20, 2004 HDMI 1.2 was released August 8, 2005 HDMI 1.2a was released on December 14, 2005 HDMI 1.3 was released June 22, 2006 HDMI 1.3a was released on November 10, 2006 HDMI 1.3b was released on March 26, 2007 HDMI 1.3b1 was released on November 9, 2007 HDMI 1.3c was released on August 25, 2008 HDMI 1.4 was released on May 28, 2009 HDMI 1.4a was released on March 4, 2010 HDMI 1.4b was released on October 11, 2011 HDMI 2.0 was released on September 4, 2013 HDMI 2.0a was released on April 8, 2015 So based on the average life span of the HDMI spec we should see another one announced by Q4 2016. 8K baby.
