Here is a post from another forum covering the topic of region free.
" I am also "dependant" on having the BDP-93 zone free or multiregion capable so I sent an e-mail to blueraychip.dk, who are in Denmark, last night asking about the rumoured DIY kit for the 93. They responded to me late last night that the DIY kit for the 93 is basically ready but they cannot release it for sale until they have tested it on the actual player. The said they will be getting a US player on Tuesday next week (I guess one of the pre-realeses) and then they would be able to start selling the DIY kit a week after that!!"
Hope this is useful.
Dave.

As far as I know I don't have any personal experience. I purchased my 83 from a store in Canberra (Australia) and they fitted the region mod. Dave.

Those who had the 83 with the UMC, when you watch a Bluray movie do you set the UMC video setup to pass thru, so basically you are using the video processor of the 83 and not the UMC video processor. Also how does this work with your TV, don't you have a video processor in your TV as well. Just trying to understand some info here. Thanks jim You should try different video settings and see which one looks best to you. I've decided on 1080P/60Hz, to me it just looks better, and there is little difference in picture quality with the BDP-83 connected directly to my plasma display. I plan on Monday when the BDP-93 arrives, using both of its HDMI outputs to use the UMC-1 to decode only the high res audio and allowing the Marvel Kyoto G2 video processor to work it's magic. Hopefully I'll see quite a difference.

In my experience the UMC-1 does a good job at passing through from my Oppo (hence I use the term slight) but a lousy job at passing through my Topfield. Dave.

You should be! I think it will be a pretty good upgrade from the 83.

Knowing what going from a Panasonic DMP-BD80 to the Oppo BDP-83 was like, you are going to be totally in awe when you open up the box and feel the sheer heft compared to the mainstream Sony's, Panasonics & Samsungs.

The exact message was "Status : Approved-Ready for Fulfillment Date : Friday, November 19, 2010 Time : 20:20" Mine said the same thing untill this morning, now it says it has shipped (At the Oppo web site), but when I checked the tracking number (At Fed Ex website), it says,"Not found" My assumption is that it will ship monday and I should get it on wednesday, right before Thanksgiving. If I do, I will be watching lots of Blu-ray movies & concerts ;D I paid Fed ground $12 and since I live in So Cal it should take two days to get here, according to Oppos' website.
