Im sorry, but McIntosh,Onkyo and Emo VU meters look CHEESY, something out of the 70's. The only company who makes a good looking analog meter currently is Pass Labs, like the ones used on the XA and X series amps. They are out of the 70's

Very good point. I don't think they look cheesy though. Big meters on amplifiers rule!LED's are ok but analog meters make a statement.

I hate front panel meters. I do not ever want to own another amp with them.
To each his own, but to me they are useless and distracting.

Maybe they should make one with a flip out 5" or 6" LCD screen that displays the meters lol. That way you could just hide them if you wanted. Sounds cheesy, I know, but I guess I'm a cheesy kind of guy lol.

I personally do not like LEDs or any flashing lights...the Pioneer M-80 comes to mind. Blurry photo but you can make it out bottom left rack

I'm sorry, but for the price of the Pass amplifiers I want a big A$$ meter.
That's the beauty of this hobby though. Everybody likes something different. Keeps things interesting don't you agree?
I was never really crazy about the meters on the M-80. Much prefer the meters on the Onkyo.

I used two of these for years in a stacked double New Large Advent setup. However, the needles barely moved at my usual 85 dB listening level.

The Onks were a little too harsh with the modified Belles. M-80 was warmer, the Mc 2125 warmer still. I went tubes with the VRDstereo, had great mid and highs but lacked some bottom torque. XPA-1s have the bottom but too noisy at idle so when I get rich I will have both in a bi-amp set-up. The LEDs on the XPAs don't even flicker with the Belles. Well gotta run to the office Christmas party.

If you want to go analog this is a great example If you want to keep LEDs you must go vertical and Big Why not get it both ways like this. Who needs a black boring panel anyway.

I think the Denon POA-A1HDCI manages to pull of analog meters without looking cheesy.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Denon. I've always loved the look of that amp.

Here's a neat example from our friends at Onkyo:

Sure you guys mean VU? VU was originally used for telco, and got adapted for broadcast and similar applications.
I believe 0 VU is indicating 1 mw into 600 ohms.
I think you want power meters, or something along those lines.
I would actually prefer a readout telling me this -
* Over the last two seconds, the peak output voltage was X% of the rail voltage.
I figure that would give you some nice knowledge about how close to clipping you are running.
