Wow...NEW FAN here of Trigger Hippy! No surprise as I knew I would be. From left to right...Jackie Green (Black Crowes), Joan Osborne, Steve Gorman(Black Crowes), Nick Govrik, Tom Bukovac. Self described as a Soul infused Rock and Roll Band...that is a great description. Their first album hits the streets on September 30. I purchased an advanced copy (sans artwork) last night. Sounds an awful lot like if Joan Osborne just started singing for the Black Crowes. Joan and Jackie share lead vocals and Jackie and Tom share lead guitar efforts....except when Jackie plays the B3. Oh....the B3! Check them out.

Some here may find this a 'been there, done that' but I still find Paul McCartney live a lot of fun. I'd seen him with Wings in 1990 and enjoyed the show quite a bit, when someone offered me last minute tickets to last night's show I jumped on them. McCartney was excellent, very practiced and polished, but also just a band – five guys making a lot of music with no backup singers, horn sections, tapes, or orchestra. Paul's voice was in very good shape, strongly singing every song from solo acoustic ballads like "Blackbird", to the raucous "Helter Skelter". The other four musicians - Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson on guitar, Paul Wickens on keyboards, and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. - all sang very strong backups and harmonies. McCartney traded bass and guitar with Ray, while Anderson played most of the leads. McCartney also played piano on several songs, and Wickens’ keyboards throughout the night were excellent. Abe Laboriel’s drumming was always right and never overbearing (like Ringo’s), but as a big guy he seemed to bring some extra power that backed and filled nicely. Of the night’s 38 songs 25 were from The Beatles catalog and certainly they were the most appreciated by everyone, the Wings material was also well received, as expected the newer McCartney songs fit in nicely but the response was more polite (the music went almost three hours!) One could argue that the original Beatles couldn’t have put on such a successful show as their personalities would have each pulled the concept in different directions - though maybe if they all had aged as well as Paul has, they would have given the reins to another ‘5th Beatle’ who could have run the show and given everyone their proper spotlight (there’s probably about a billion people who’d like to see that!). Certainly it was a Beatles' night and McCartney and company gave the people what they wanted and what he seems to still love. Throughout the night Paul shared various times and events - they played a short “Foxy Lady” jam as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, afterward Paul recollected Jimi playing "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” at one of his shows three days after it was released. Paul also had kind words for John, and George; he played a solo Ukulele opening verse to Harrison’s “Something”, but as the song went on the rest of the band joined in and were in full force for Rusty Anderson’s melodic and powerful take on George’s solo. Even the venue had Beatles history as they had played Dodger stadium just before their final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966 (though McCartney's three encores last night were longer than the entire Beatles set in ’66 - if short a couple songs). Dodger Stadium is not the greatest venue for music, but given McCartney’s popularity there weren’t many options in LA, that said few left disappointed and many yelled ‘thank you’ as Paul and band left the stage. The outdoors did avail itself to some nice pyrotechnics, during “Live and Let Die”, and then to finish the show; the ‘Supermoon’ also added some extra ambiance to the event. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer evening and I think the rest of the audience agreed. Edit: Here's a link to the setlist: Paul McCartney Dodger Stadium Setlist

Went to a free concert at Newpark, Park City last night. These summer concerts are more of a social event where people bring lawn chairs, wine and snacks, and chat it up with their friends. Well as soon as the band started playing I started listening, very nice music – a soulful blues that was old and new at the same time. When a friend asked what kind of music it was I said blues, but that it reminded me of Van Morrison. I started asking around who it was and nobody knew, some said he was a Native American, but I would have placed his look from a bar in New Orleans. The 'leader' played guitar and sang everything, accompaniment was bass, drums, and a Hammond type organ. I loved his guitar playing as well, a very relaxed finger picking style. This morning I looked up who it was, his name is Garret LeBeau. His web page says this about his music "Garrett LeBeau is a natural player. New and old fans hear Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, Al Green and J.J. Cale in his songs and vocals. His playing style veers from blues through rock, jazz and into folk. They all find home in the music of Garrett LeBeau." So besides telling of my 'Live' event I wanted to make others aware of Garret LeBeau, he has a debut CD available on Amazon I'll be picking up (it's also on iTunes). If this sounds good to you give it a listen. Here's a link to his website: Garrett LeBeau's PageHere's his album on Amazon: Garrett LeBeau's CD
As Andy Griffith might say 'gooood music'!

As Andy Griffith might say 'gooood music'! Looks like he lives in Austin now(at least he plays there A LOT)? Will have to check him out. I have found several bands in the last year or so from Austin. That scene must be very fertile music land right now. Thanks for the heads up! EDIT: Just played the snippets on Amazon. Mellow groove for sure. He reminds me of Seth Walker...check him out at sethwalker.com.

I see so many shows in small venues...I almost can't go to the large ones anymore unless I can get in the first 10 rows or so. I'm spoiled.

I saw Ryan Adams last night at a sold out show at the Old National Center here in Indianapolis. Butch Walker was the opening act. Butch announced he had a new album due out in February that Ryan Adams produced. Should be interesting. Both artists were fantastic and Ryan and band even came out and played 2 songs with Butch (Ryan on drums!). Butch came back out and played the encore.
Ryan covered his whole catalog and played 2 hours. Got my money's worth last night!

I've been to Joe Bonamassa in Amsterdam on March 12. Joe did a great show. Reese Wynans on the keyboards played a major role in the concert: supportive, subtle, and sometime taking the lead of the band.
Someone else posted a short video from that evening:

Caught The Mavericks at Thalia Hall here in Chicago last night. What a great show. This veteran band really brought the mustard.....playing for 2:30 with a few of their classics and most if not all of their new album "Mono". Raul Malo was in full vocal glory.
The Mavericks are an eclectic American band, combining neotraditional country music, Latin, and Rockabilly influences. The Mavericks were founded in 1989 in Miami, Florida. Between 1991 and 2003, the band recorded six studio albums, in addition to charting 14 singles on the Billboard country charts. Their highest-peaking American single was 1996's "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down", a collaboration with accordionist Flaco Jiménez. They are best known in the UK for their 1998 single "Dance the Night Away," which was at the top of the charts for ten weeks in the UK. In 1996, The Mavericks won a Grammy Award for the song "Here Comes the Rain."
Here's a taste.
