Living in Nashville we are fortunate to have so many shows to see each year. As we approach summer time, I thought I would start a conversation about all the great (and not so great) shows we all see/hear. Our favorite venue is the historic Ryman Audiotorium. The "Mother Church of Country Music" is more than just the former home of the Grand Ole Opry it actually attracts an eclectic mix of music. Last Saturday Dan and I saw Tom Jones, and at 71 he put on a great show. His voice is strong, his band is young and his mix of music styles was upbeat. His new songs are bluesy, not "Vegas" of the 70's and the crowd went wild with his updated versions of a couple of old tunes. Sound was great, not too loud; a fun and upbeat show. Who have you been to see lately? ;D ;D

Cathy,
Cool idea....
Ok, here goes and guys, please don't laugh....
Went and saw "Yanni" last month at the Durham Performing Arts center in Durham, NC. I was fortunate to have gotten an 11th row dead center seat as well. The sound was fantastic. Louder that I would have expected for a large "theater," but for me, it was perfect.
Earlier in the month I also was able to catch "The High Kings" at The Clayton Center. A much smaller and much more intimate venue. Once again, near dead center 9th row. Sound was excellent. More of a raw live sound and not as honed in as the Yanni concert, but still very, very good.
Now, flipping 180deg.... Went and saw "Blind Guardian" at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC. This venue is NOT a place to truly appreciate the sound... I ONLY went because I am such a HUGE fan of these guys, but the sound was WAAAAAY to friggin loud. So loud that Hansi voice would get lost in all of the distortion. Still a great show, but dang my ears hurt afterwards. Trust me, I LOVE it LOUD, but if it's loud it needs to be accurate, not just loud for the sake of being loud...
Along that same vain, I also saw Nightwish at the Nokia theater in Times Square, NC. I would have "thought" for such a nice, oversized club that the sound would have been better, but alas it was NOT. Again, way to friggin loud. Come on all you club owners, these big names that come here from overseas need better treatment. I won't be going back.
Going to see "Within Temptation in NYC at a different venue with my daughter in September. Hoping that venue will be better. I don't want my daughter loosing her hearing. The show is going to be at "Terminal 5." Anyone ever been there before???

The last actual concert I attended was this past February in Thomasville, GA where Chris Botti was performing at the Thomasville Center for the Arts. I remember looking through an e-mail update on upcoming concerts and I had to read it twice, thinking there is no way Chris Botti would be performing in a small town just north of Tallahassee. He is an exceptional performer and can put out some really great notes on that trumpet of his. The auditorium was meant for a concert like this and the ambiance/atmosphere was perfect pitched for his music.

I'm a big Rush fan; I've seen every concert they've staged since Roll the Bone at Redbird arena in Normal, Illinois in November 91. I last saw them last Summer in St. Louis with my daughter. She's made the last 2 concerts of theirs. I almost took her to the Vapor Trails concert but deemed she was a bit young for the crowd. I always look forward to seeing them in concert, now especially because my daughter likes the shows. They haven't put on a bad show (that I've seen) yet.

Funny you should say Yanni. I just got back from Vegas and he was playing there. We say a guy at the airport playing near the exit and though it looked like him. Sure enough it was him lol. The security guard says he comes and plays there quite often just for fun. Man he's great!

Be careful of very loud shows. Hearing damage is accumulative, and once you damage it, there ain't no going back. For that reason I now *always* bring along a set of EarSoft foam earplugs to every show. If I deem it too loud, in they go. You can get them on Ebay for $14/100 pr. delivered...

I never cared for Tom Jones, I was more of an acid queen and liked psychedelia, folk, jazz, blues, and classical. I used to have a subscription for the New Folk Collective and the orchestra here and just love live music. And as a teen I abused my ears at concerts that were way too loud, sometimes having ringing in my ears for days afterwards. But the best concert I attended was an Elton John one in '72. He was terrific even then.

Haven't seen the shows I wanted to but the last one I saw (February '11) was The Bottle Rockets with Marshall Crenshaw (The Rockets opened and then were the backing band for Marshall). Awesome show in an intimate setting (Lafayette Brewing Co. - Lafayettte, IN.).

I know, Tom Jones was not a concert I would have ever dreamed of going to when I was younger, but his show was great. We see all kinds of shows a few weeks ago we saw Lady Gaga One Republic and Boz Skaggs. Next up: May 19th Paul Simon ;D ;D

Don't know if we have any Lissie fans around here but i think she is a great up and coming artist and she puts on a great show. I believe she is in Australia now and i know we have some emotiva customers out there. I've seen her twice in Philly in this wonderful venue, First Unitarian Church. if you get a chance, check her out

Has anyone here ever seen U2 live? I've heard they are amazing in concert! I'm going to see them here in Nashville this July. Apparently this is the first time they've played in Nashville since 1980, so I'm excited!!! I hate to admit it, but I'm almost a little more excited about their opening act....Florence & The Machine. Strange pairing but I can't wait ;D ;D ;D

They have a live jazz band that performs during services and they are terrific. Best jazz I heard in ages. May go back there.

I saw them in Tampa, Raymond James Stadium, back in Oct 2009, and I believe "Muse" opened for them if I'm not mistaken, but I'm one of those that will intentionally miss an opening band if I'm not interested. I'm not a big U2 fan, but I did enjoy the concert, though I thought for the money paid, they didn't play long enough. I will say, that U2 did not make my top 10 concerts, which includes, Billy Joel (lost track of how many times), The Rolling Stones, Genesis, AC/DC, the Police, Heart & Kansas(same concert), ELO, The Eagles, The Who and Rush. These were all in large venues and many of these concerts were when I was in high school/college and just after college. Lots of fond memories are probably why these were my favorites, but overall Billy Joel has been my favorite over the years, I even saw him with Elton John a couple of times, but my all-time favorite concert was the Rolling Stones back in the early 80's in Orlando, in the old Tangerine Bowl when Van Halen opened for them. I have yet to see a more entertaining concert, the Stones had so much energy back then. Anyone here that ever saw the Stones can probably back this up, not to mention half the crowd was probably stoned. ;D

Lawrence I was at that U2 concert also. My wife loves them so I went along. Not my favorite either but a good show. Saw them in Jax aso. Saw the Who in Atlanta and they were not good but saw the farewell tour in B'ham and it was awesome. Used to tour with the Dead. Neil Young is superb, seen him several times. Santana and Jeff Beck and Allman Bros. are great shows. Last show was Johnny Winter. Wish I had seen him in his prime but was still good. To many other shows to list.

Cathy, you, Dan and the rest of the gang are indeed lucky to live where you do. Nashville is where all the music from the grand artists of all the country styles (Folk, Blue grass, Country, Blues Fusion, etc.) is happening in a daily basis! Even Canadians love that place you're talking about (Neil Young & family). * Sorry that I cannot share a recent live show; I just been too busy with the sky... {But I did play my Chromatic harmonica yesterday right here at home in my balcony outside. And the day before I played my steel flute (soprano one)}. What I missed in life (live music concerts), I try to compensate by playing my own live music! I envy anyone with musical talents! Yes, we are indeed lucky to have so much talent that is either in town or comes to town and we appreciate how easy it is here to get out and experience live music. I was having dinner at Mario's in Hillsboro Village several years ago and Neil Young was there, when he was in town recording his last album. Our server said he ate there every night.

over the weekend saw Rhett Miller (lead singer for Old 97's) do a solo acoustic show, what a great performer! weekend before = Robert Plant / Band of Joy I cannot say enough about Mr. Plant, not only is he a great performer, it is amazing his voice has held up so well, albeit his range is not what it once was - he is awesome at sharing the stage with his bandmates, who are phenomenal in their own right, and you can always count on a guest appearance or two. another fairly recent highlight was seeing Social Distortion, one of my favorite bands -- after the last few tours, they seemed to be getting a bit tired of playing the same ole same ole, and I have to say, with the release of the new & long overdue album, they are reinvigorated! Couple of great openers too, Lucero & Chuck Ragan! Rush is a sore spot with me. They are by far my favorite band, have been since Moving Pictures (although Grace Under Pressure through me for a loop), and have seen every tour from Signals through Vapor Trails (& R30 at Radio City in NYC!) -- but have been having issues with getting good seats, as well as them playing at a venue I despise the last few times through the Bay Area, so now I ease the pain by throwing in a DVD the night of concert... it is frustrating, as a long-time fan & always on the pre-pre-sale info, and still get hosed on seat location, and end up not going cuz I can't justify the mark-up in secondary market...

They probably won't tour again, and I don't have $1000 for a nosebleed seat. I've always wanted to see The Eagles and had an opportunity in Knoxville a few years ago but couldn't make it. I'm glad I didn't though, because apparently 95% of the concert was material from their latest album. A good album, but nothing on early material. I'm still hoping and praying that seeing Van Morrison will be a possibility, I could die a happy woman
