Hello friends. I called Emotiva today and asked to speak with someone that does the firmware installs. I spoke with a knowledgeable gentleman named Joe and I asked him if he could tell me exactly how he does a firmware install when units are sent in for that service. He was very patient with me as I called a couple of times to verify what I was doing. The bottom line difference in their technique versus the documentation is with the DSP Flash where you quit the installer at the end of step 1 and let the UMC itself do the write and verify steps. Here are the explicit instruction that I received and applied to my system thus avoiding the dreaded "Overtime" errors. 1) Restore defaults on the UMC and powerdown and turn the unit off-then-on from the back panel 2) Launch installer and load DSP file then start. Once Step 1 gets to 100% quit the installer. 3) Turn unit off-then-on from the back panel 4) Unit should have amber lights. Now push the pwr button or use remote. Now the UMC will load and start to do Step 2 Write and Step 3 Verify. Progress can be monitored on the front panel display. Once you get the "Complete!" message then power off the unit and turn it off-then-on from the back panel. 5) Launch installer and load the UMC Decoder file. Once it reaches 100% Umc will automatically power down. Now quit the installer. 6)Turn unit off-then-on from the back panel and press power button where the unit will load. 7) Restore Defaults 8) go through your setups

Wow, thanks Reg! I'll give this a try today. Who knows, maybe it will help with not getting the files corrupted, and help with the inconsistency problems we've been seeing.

Everything is good for you now? That sounds promising!
Why haven't we known about this a long time ago?

This is how I did my update on the second attempt.
I recommend it.
Dave.

1) Restore defaults on the UMC and powerdown and turn the unit off then on from the back panel 2) Launch installer and load DSP file then start. Once Step 1 gets to 100% quit the installer. But doesn't the installer automatically go to step 2 after completing step 1? Do you just have to sit there and wait and close it real quick before it goes on to step 2?

Yes, watch and when the status changes to complete kill the installer. This is why they do not have this as the documented procedure as they thought it would be harder for folks but it is only about 4 minutes to watch and no "Overtime" errors which were driving me nuts plus not getting a clean upgrade. This way you get the clean upgrade and no errors.

I just tried this method for the heck of it. It went much smoother with no errors. I still have EmoQ distortion, so it didn't fix much for me.
if you haven't loaded the firmware and are planning to, definitely worth trying it this way. It was much less frustrating.

Once I hear a couple more success stories, I will sticky this thread. Just want to be sure it's not random, otherwise the naysayers will be back with gusto!

Sticksnstones, did this reverse your distortion issue? Thanks for posting! Yes, I have tight bass, crystal clear highs, subwoofer right where it should be and no cardboard on DV. I have two XPA-2's bridged so well over 500w per channel and played DV on mid settiing at 35 on the volume dial and no distortion. I have a clean install.

I have been preaching for some time now that despite the 100% completion, something was definitely wrong when so many folks were getting such varied results. Thanks Reg, for the dilligent effort. I believe that a lot more people (owners) are going to be a happy.

Alright, FW is done, everything is set up again and...it's brilliant! Reg, thank you so much for posting this! The fourth time is the charm for me lol.
To start off, the update went faster than usual by about 4 minutes(it used to take about 18 minutes for me). Then once I got it set up, everything still works, but it's much better. Video and audio lock is slightly better than my previous .19 loads, I can now use DV on PLIIx and Neo:6 and it sounds great, I don't have the pops any more when going up and down through the volume starting at 50, and the slight crackle/static in the surrounds during certain commercials is now gone. Also, the audio lock with my DVR is fast enough that I ditched my optical cord.
But that's not all. I got very curious(and courageous)and decided to give EmoQ a run. As many of you know, EmoQ has always been terrible for me, and I've always avoided it like the plague. I've even told other people to pretend that its not even there lol. Anyway, I ran the test(still needed to rub my fingers together over the mic to get it to go)and unbelievably it almost nailed my distances for every speaker. The only things that were a little weird, was that it set my surround crossover to 130hz(they're full range towers that I'm using as temporary surrounds)and it set my sub level way down to -8.0.
So I decided to accept it, and made some slight adjustments to the 500hz setting on my center and mains, and took the sub level up to about where I had it before.
I was instantly amazed by how well it sounded with TV, so I decided to watch a little bit of "A Bug's Life" for a proper test. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it sounded amazing with EmoQ! Much much better than I ever got it with manual adjustments. Granted, I never used REW or anything else. The vocal clarity(even at very high volumes)is amazing, the surround info is the best I've ever had, and the bass is very dynamic with huge slam, and it's incredibly well integrated with no excess boom or bloated nastiness that I experienced before with EmoQ.
Needless to say, I'm amazed, and I will be keeping this EmoQ setting for a while. At least until I get the courage to run it again to see if it can improve lol.
The first three times I loaded this FW, it was a great improvement over the previous versions, but this update procedure that Reg has provided is the best thing since canned beer lol. Every new bug I got from .19 is now gone, and everything that was improved works even better now.
The only thing I can find wrong so far, is that it still won't default to "All Stereo" for my PS3. Not a huge deal. I'll keep working on it to see if I can get it to stick.
I can't comment on the True HD problems or the PLIIx problems that people are going through, since I can't bitstream with my fat PS3, and I don't run 7.1 so I don't use PLIIx on the high res codecs.

Ehhhh...after listening for about 10 minutes well known music, still don't like it.I did think of a new word to describe the sound "fake" like someone adjusted it to "sound good" instead of a natural, flowing, the more volume the worse it sounds.Up until this FW the more I turned it up the better it sounded until you thought something would surely break.Oh well.....what was the last FW?
I just thought I'd mention that movies souded great with the latest FW, this unit has become a good HT unit, even DV which I don't use made low level dialog loud and clear.
I also should say I don't hate the sound, it just ain't as good. The music sounds brash and makes me not want to listen at louder volume.I'm sure there could be those that would think it sounds fine, it's surely bright, but I liked the unit I had for the last two years.
